Core 2 Duo MacBooks Announced

So has anyone placed an order yet - the stores been up for at least 10 minutes? Just waiting for the "waiting for my macbook thread".

Not particularly thrilled about these, I thought I would be pissed when the C2D MacBooks came out, but the only thing worth it to me is the hardrive otherwise I'll stick with my Core Duo MacBook .

(Of course, day by day those C2D MacBook Pros are looking more and more enticing...)

Most people ship with 512mb in their base laptops at the moment and as for the combo drive the vast majority of us never even think about burning a dvd. Better to release a cheaper model and offer the user the chance to upgrade than price people out with unrequired features - although obviously a gb of ram would be handy.

Not in that price range they don't...and £749 isn't cheap. Have you seen the PC World TV ad for the £699 core 2 lap top?

Yes you get great software with a Mac - iLife, unfortunately, half of it is useless (iMovie, iDVD) because you have a combo drive.

Isn't it only a £30 drop - only done it so that it appears to be under a grand. Its not a significant drop - shame really, because its still so much more than the white one!

It's only £20 more now than a same-spec white one. Cheaper than before I think.

So which is it, a 60W MagSafe like in the Core Duos or an 85W MagSafe like the MacBook Pros?

The 2.0Ghtz versions were upgraded to 1GB Ram minimum (up from 512).

But does the 1GB use one memory slot or two?

Knowing Apple, most likely both slots are taken up. It's typical Apple.

Yippee! If only they had an improved video card.

Almost always, a more powerful video card equals more heat and shorter battery life. I can completely understand the decision behind keeping the current card.

I was just about to post this. The UK store appears down for me at the moment. This is based on the edu price (the UK edu store is up for me).

I'm teetering the edge of buying the black one. If that price was for a 1x1GB memory config I'd be a lot more tempted.

I think I can wait until the MBP 13.3 that will be announced in January (alongside the touchscreen ipod).

They are mighty Powerfull and reasonably cheap. I have to admit that i was secretly hoping for an updated GFX chip. I suppose the GMA950 will have to do...

The Wednesday announcement

I was wondering "why did they announce it today instead of Tuesday?" then I remembered the elections. Steve probably didn't want to be totally lost in the media swamp.

I don't mind the GMA all that much. If you don't do gaming it is pleanty powerful enough. I gave up on gaming after giving up on WoW in favor of FF XII. It is pretty pathetic that Apple still even sells a computer with a combo drive tho.... that really should be standard even in the $1099 model these days.

The edu price for 2gb is an additional 112, how far off consumer prices is that (I know a gig for my lappy will set me back 90 but I'm not up on prices for other people's memory).

It would be really disappointing if they waited with this upgrade for mwsf 2007. I mean, what's new, apart from the very expected Core 2 Duo and the very slow upper hard drive option.

No, I expected at least a different Intel graphical chipset and an upgrade to 1 GB RAM over the full line. Also, it's still $1099, not $999.

Rather disappointing upgrade, Apple, whas this all you did in almost half a year of development?
