Agreed. That would have been with a bigger cache though. Is there much of a speed bump for the 1.83?

The cache alone doesn't explain that particular benchmark, as overall speed increase clock for clock is only 10%. I haven't seen the 1.83 tested so can't comment.

My friend calls them toilet seats. But he has a white one too. Trust me, Apple screwed up with the black finish. It's stupid matte paint that absorbs grease marks, and *does* peel off. I had both issues.

Your only other option then is a MacBook Pro. Worth it IMO, but you might not want to pay the premium.

It's not the cost it's the size. I have two aging 12" powerbooks (rev a and c). The whole point of a laptop, sorry notebook, for me is the small size.

I am listening when you say the black isn't a good finish. I'm holding off my buy for a while yet :)

OK cool, that is good news then. Personally I just wouldn't consider CD based machines to be an option.

The C2D MBP was relieved of the whine and some other issues one they moved to C2D. If the MacBook becomes free of these issues as well with this move than the small update is still great news.

No, later CD builds were relieved of the whine. That wasn't solved by a C2D chip, but better quality control.

yeah i agree. having a bug-free notebook is a great improvement itself. i think i'm gonna order one soon.

It would be really disappointing if they waited with this upgrade for mwsf 2007. I mean, what's new, apart from the very expected Core 2 Duo and the very slow upper hard drive option.

No, I expected at least a different Intel graphical chipset and an upgrade to 1 GB RAM over the full line. Also, it's still $1099, not $999.

Rather disappointing upgrade, Apple, whas this all you did in almost half a year of development?

You're surprised that Apple didn't start designing graphics chips for Intel?

I had a small kernel of hope that they'd ditch the integrated GPU, but I sort of knew it wouldn't happen...

Still, this is a very nice machine, probaby the best iBook ever. The C2D is so powerful compared to the G4 it's mind boggling.

i have a 1st generation macbook so in a way im glad not much was updated... :p

well I think an upgrade to C2D is significant (to me at least) and for my pocket - I was always going to have to get 1gig RAM and pay extra for it - now I don't have to spend that money - it comes stock

The slight bump in stock HD offerings isn't a want of mine - but is nice.

Primarily I'm excited about this revision - as it is a revision and hopefully will have less issues than the problematic-appearing revA MB.

OK, I hear you. Seriously then, the white MacBook is a great machine. It's light-grey inside if that makes any difference to you ;)

But if you don't need a new laptop right now, it's always better to wait. Lucky for you that Macworld SF is just around the corner and something new always gets announced. I'd be surprised though if these laptops see any changes then though. The next update will be nearer summer 2007 I reckon, when Intel start shipping the 800Mhz bus Merom updates with Santa Rosa.

Is it just me or do others find the old specs quietly slipping out of memory; what were the old CPU speeds again that they can claim "25% faster"?

Now I really have nothing to procrastinate about on ordering a Macbook...

Anyone who was expecting more from this update was living in a bit of a dreamland. The MacBook design is the newest of all the form factors from Apple and from the sales figures they have no reason yet to think about changing it. Incremental updates are nice to see, price cuts are even nicer.

As for what we're now going to get at MacWorld. I think iTV, video iPod and BluRay will be the main talking points there, along with a small update across the range to support 802.11n. I don't think Leopard will be ready by January.

I am dissapointed that they did not upgrade the specs for the 1.83 model.

They managed to hold the price for the other models while upping RAM, HD and Superdrive to Double Layer. Why on earth have they not given them all 1Gig RAM throughout the line.

Yes, it drives people to buy the 2.0 model and YES it drives away the others that are not prepared to spend this extra 200$....

If only a 12" form factor

Someday, I hope, Apple will release another 12" laptop- prefereably an MBP. I don't think I will buy another computer until then- I love my 1.33 12" PB!

black one only £20 cheaper than same spec white

UK store is up :)

Black or White C2D?

The black one is only £20 cheaper than same spec white one if you upgrade it to 120gb HD.

Which colour to get?

Aussie store is still down, AI are reporting links to non-existent Core 2 Duo Mac mini webpages.... very interesting.

But stupid.

What's worse, it's more powerful than my dual G5 tower. And my machine is only 2 years old! Same with my 12" PowerBook. All in all, for what I paid for my PB, today for the same cash, I can buy a machine with 8x the computing power. Maybe if I wait another two years to upgrade, computing power would be 64x!! :)

If you plan to upgrade the RAM anyhow - go for the 2.0 model. It has Superdrive (DL), 1 Gig RAM, 4 MB Processor cache (instead of 2MB for the 1.83) and bigger HD.

The 1.83 Model is CRAP

a really nice update methinks, with the 1 gig of ram and higher hard drives, these really are great machines for the home user, i'm sure my folks will buy one, and it will suit their wireless internet needs perfectly

matte screen and pre-n wireless

it seems that there is no longer an option for the "matte" screen, only the glossy one.

also, and this is a guess, the new airport cards are the same as the pre-n ones found in recent MBPs and iMacs.
