The edu price for 2gb is an additional 112, how far off consumer prices is that (I know a gig for my lappy will set me back 90 but I'm not up on prices for other people's memory).

Don't forget that 120GB HD. It is a moot point though, the HD is easily replaced in the MB.

It is pretty pathetic that Apple still even sells a computer with a combo drive tho.... that really should be standard even in the $1099 model these days.

Other computer companies, such as Dell, still sell machines with only a combo drive, so it is not like Apple is so far behind the times. :)

These are really tempting... everybody talks about the GPU being disappointing, but coming from my 1 GHz 12" G4 I am sure this thing would still run WoW a whole heck of a lot better than what I have now!

But I still hold out hope for a reincarnation of the 12" form factor. I love the portability. Maybe it'll be an iMac to replace the aging desktop and keep the PowerBook for travelling...

Im glad to see that they finally upgraded their consumer line of notebooks. Now for the RAM, 2 gig's costs about 250 dollars, so if its anywhere near that price to upgrade on the apple store, its a good deal. Ive noticed lately apple has been a little more moderate on their RAM prices, atleast on some machines.

I suspected it would be extremely soon, that's why I didn't bother doubling up and getting the previous £899 model out on display as well as the £749.

Anyway, the 1GB of RAM was expected as far as I was concerned, but I didn't expect the BlackBook to jump straight up to 120GB in one shot.

So, base to mid we have faster cpu with better L2 cache, bigger hard drive and DVD burning now. Easier to persuade people to go higher than previously.

Ah good to see that it's not worth upgrading my Core Duo MB to the new one, I think the speed increase wil lbe negligble (comparing a 1.83Ghz CD with 1.83C2D)

I think that's right, for the most part.

Those Core Duo MB owners might consider a hardrive upgrade, to a 7200rpm drive, for a nice speedbump.

Yeah the benefit for C2D is the bigger cache size mostly. That's only available on 2GHz and up AFAIK.

I'd still rather have the new potentially bug fixed hardware though.

I was just about to post this. The UK store appears down for me at the moment. This is based on the edu price (the UK edu store is up for me).

I'm teetering the edge of buying the black one. If that price was for a 1x1GB memory config I'd be a lot more tempted.

I think I can wait until the MBP 13.3 that will be announced in January (alongside the touchscreen ipod). :D

I wouldn't get the black. I had one, and it looked great fresh from the box, but looked old and tired 30 minutes later with grease marks all over it. Stick with the white as the smooth plastic finish doesn't show marks and is easier to clean.

Well, the wait is over.
Will these be available at the apple store today or will it be quicker to get it off apple's online store?

As stated by many prior to me, I think the update is a solid one but really wish it had a better way to handle the graphics.

I have a remedial video question: does the GMA perform well enough for Final Cut Express? If it does I'd consider getting a MB rather than a MBP and put the money in a desktop display. I'll do 80% of my work at my desk anyway.

So the real question: is there bang for the buck on a MBP if I don't game and most of my work is iLife, MSOffice and Firefox?

Thanks for the brain cells -

Just ordered my new macbook!

hi all, I have been awaiting this update and have now just ordered my new macbook. I am really glad they upgraded the RAM to 1GB on the middle model as I would have been paying for that upgrade anyway. I ordered it through my universities higher education store, so it cost me a total of £775.48 for the stock white 2ghz model, plus an "incase neoprene sleeve". I hope these sleeves provide adequate protection, if not I will have to get something else, I plan to take the laptop to uni with me every day so I am sure it will suffer a few bumps (not if i can help it obviously but accidents happen!). I am glad i didnt order one a couple of weeks ago like i almost did - thought i'd hold off for an update!

i bought a macbook 2ghz core duo, 1gb, 80gb, superdrive at the apple store this past sunday. it looks like now i could of gotten the core 2 duo with all the other same specs for about $200 cheaper. does anyone know if apple has some sort of exchange policy for situations like this?

That's the problem. There's no way I'm having a white laptop.

...and 64 bit, and better SIMD processing etc. Recent MacWorld benchmarks show the same clockspeed C2D 28% faster than the CD in iTunes encoding. That sold it to me.

It would be really disappointing if they waited with this upgrade for mwsf 2007.

I don't think we'll see a new MB at MWSF 2007. Possibly a bit later than that in time for the Leopard release.

But then again we never know.

Agreed. That would have been with a bigger cache though. Is there much of a speed bump for the 1.83?

My friend calls them toilet seats. But he has a white one too. Trust me, Apple screwed up with the black finish. It's stupid matte paint that absorbs grease marks, and *does* peel off. I had both issues.

Your only other option then is a MacBook Pro. Worth it IMO, but you might not want to pay the premium.

The C2D MBP was relieved of the whine and some other issues one they moved to C2D. If the MacBook becomes free of these issues as well with this move than the small update is still great news.

So what would you do with this edu discount option, now that everything's been updated to the C2D line:

13.3" MBP (White - mid level) for $1199
13.3 MBP (Black) for $1399
OR
15.4 MBP for $1799.

What's the sweet spot -- if you're doing all the basics plus occasional video editing of short commercial projects and the periodic photoshop use?

Anyone who was expecting more from this update was living in a bit of a dreamland. The MacBook design is the newest of all the form factors from Apple and from the sales figures they have no reason yet to think about changing it. Incremental updates are nice to see, price cuts are even nicer.

As for what we're now going to get at MacWorld. I think iTV, video iPod and BluRay will be the main talking points there, along with a small update across the range to support 802.11n. I don't think Leopard will be ready by January.
