So what? RAM is RAM, no matter if on-chip or off-chip. The comparison with cache is not applicable, cache isn't RAM, not even remotely.

Not necessarily...the RAM on the A4 is directly attached which means that it has a shorter (quicker) access path to the CPU. RAM is connected to the processor using ARM's 64-bit-wide ABMA 3 AXI bus. So given the choice between off-chip and on-chip, for a device that is not upgradable, the choice is obvious from both a performance and packaging perspective.

At this point, it's not really necessary. Anything more than 512 MB will be wasted. There's no point for Apple to spend extra on superfluous hardware.

With multi-tasking (and potentially dual cores) 1 GB makes sense. And then there is the marketing aspect as well.

Personally, I want to see micro-USB 3, HDMI output, and a micro SD card to transfer video & etc to the iPhone (or iPad) for viewing at my convenience. A nice little tray like the micro SIM card tray would do the trick so that you could swap them out and watch your NetFlix movies from one card and keep another for other things. Hopefully the Corex 9 based chip will be dual core with separate HD encoding/decoding cores a la Nvidia Tegra 2.

Think about this... Verizon admitted to have been given the opportunity to carry the iPhone on verizon. They denied it. Think of any verizon phone... on what phone do you not see a verizon logo on the phone, in the start up, on your home screen. What phone do you not have a "verizon store" or in the case of the droids a section in the market called "verizon." Apple would never let a company band within the phone or on the phone except for the little service area at the top left of the home screen.

Verizon doesnt allow what Apple wants to do, which is let Apple run the phone. Verizon manages all updates, ATT does not. Apple dispatches all of their updates. When you get an update for your droid, its dispatched from the Verizon servers, not Motorola or HTC.

I could see a CDMA iPad like they rumored about testing, but not an iPhone, just doesnt seem possible. but thats just me.

It is generally accepted that Verizon passed on Apple's first deal because they were not going to give Apple a part of the monthly payments.

And/or Apple wanted to focus on a device that was just GSM because the rest of the world is GSM and CDMA is only used in the US and a few other countries.

I don't think so because Apple did approach Verizon before AT&T.

I do agree that GSM is the predominant standard, however. I am one of the people who believes that we should have a single national technical standard for cell phones so that a Verizon phone would work on a T-Mobile network or a Sprint on AT&T or AT&T on whatever. I do not believe the multiple standards benefit anyone, certainly not the consumer. The land line system (which has served fairly well) "just works". When you pick up a phone and dial a number, someone at the other end answers. IMO that is all consumers really want. Yes there are reimbursement rate issues that sometimes take longer than they should to get sorted out properly, but in the end the system works.

They can't fix the antenna in 6 months, the last one was in testing for two years! Unless they knew that it was flawed two years ago, and so developed another one that could be released to solve it? Surely they wouldn't do that?

Also, if they update in January, is it just Verizon compatible, or do they update various internals? Just Verizon? Or both CDMA + GSM?

Just a thought, presumably, a CDMA specific iPhone wouldn't work in places like the UK? It'd have to be universal, it's a high-end phone, with many business users who go abroad to work/casual holiday goers?

Many speculate it will be a world phone. That means it will have CDMA and GSM radios.

yeah but a phone that carries two radio frequencies would require a battery like no other, and as far as i can tell...unless im going mad.... apple has made, not just the iphone, but every other product smaller. theres no possible way they would even be able to get a single day charge out of the phone. I just purchased the 4 on tuesday and have not yet found a way to have it last two days, without it not doing what i bought it to do.... everyday tasks.

If they dont fix the antenna problems, Im sure they will allow people to end their contracts, if so they must have an alternative ready... they just dont want to lose their users that easily.

and the current iPhone already carries two frequencies so to add CDMA which carries its own two frequencies would just be absurd.

I would suggest you educate yourself a little more on the matter. I do not understand what you mean by "carries two frequencies."

Just because a phone has multiple radios does not mean they are all active at once.

So they'll be releasing it worldwide?

The iphone is already released worldwide. The speculation that is if it comes to verizon, it will be a dual GSM/CDMA radio developed with Qualcomm so that it functions on both GSM and CDMA networks.

The Blackberry Storm 2, for example, has this functionality. Works overseas because it has a GSM radio in it but it also works on Verizon's US network.

Yes, yes, I understand that, I'm wondering, do people think this means that this is the 2011 update to the iPhone (that will be released fir all iPhone markets), or just a Verizon mid-point (CDMA locations only)?

I don't think any of us know this. Many of us hope that there'll be an iphone that works on Verizon, and Apple and Verizon would seem to have many incentives to make this possible, given the large user base that Verizon has.
Neither company has said anything about it. Jobs has said "the future is a long time" when asked if there'd ever be a Verizon iphone.

Hmm, I think they'd upset alot of people if they released a new phone, six months after the iPhone 4, because no one would want to buy their contracts out to move... but everyone would want to be on Verizon. This would also apply to the fact there's a new phone, and it would be financially implausible to get it, so a huge user base would be written off by Apple.

I have to say, I do love Steve Job quotes ;)

And also upset if the new Apple Iphone fixes the "non-existent" antenna problem with a new design....

"You're holding it wrong" is one of my favourites! ;)

there wont be a new iphone or ipad till next year, why would apple hurt its sales with a new product for no reason?? New apple tv now there's a possibility....

Next year is when the rumors put the release of the iPhone 5...January or February.

I look forward to the next iPad and a Verizon iPhone. It's gonna be great to have another carrier to boost iPhone ownership. I'd also like to see it hit T-Mobile too.

Now, if the kids in the store would stop pushing Android phones for all the wrong reasons we'd be okay. :)
