For reading on the go, a 7-inch iPad would be great. Same functionality, better portability... win.

Think Kindle and Kindle DX kind of relationship.

Exactly. This is a no-brainer for Apple. They would love to capture that market.

the 7" would probably be big enough to edit on and very easy to hold/shoot.

Uh - no. The shape is hardly ergonomic for shooting.

Why do people still believe there will be a redesign? It's not going to happen, wishful thinking or not.

I hope not. I hate styluses, especially ones that freak.

:D

I don't doubt that there's a market for a 7" iPad (though it's probably not very large). But it won't happen.

Even the first-party iPad apps have buttons that are *tiny* even on a 9.7" screen. Either those apps need to be redesigned to have one look for everybody (ie, oversized buttons on the "big" iPad), or they need to support yet another screen size profile, leading to an inconsistent look.

There are so many reasons why this doesn't fit in with the Apple product line. How will they sell it? What's the big wow moment at the unveiling of the 7" iPad?

"Throw away your kindle. This one does more."

It will be huge.

That is the exact reason why Apple will support it, just like they did Edge. Get all these 1st adopters to commit to a 2 year contract with the old technology, plus make a lot of money finally releasing a CDMA compatible iPhone. Then the following year, when Verizon network is really 4G ready, release a new iPhone for Verizon with iPhone 4G/LTE.

Apple is known for releasing things with 1|2 key feature(s) missing. This way they can test the waters while keeping production cost low. Then if the item is a success they update the item with the missing feature(s), which are now even cheaper due to technology cost always dropping, and more people come and buy the product. Example, iPad RAM & Front Facing Camera.

Correct.

Well, there's your 1 or 2, but you forgot the other "must-haves" for the "Apple Sucks!" peanut gallery: user replaceable battery, HDMI-out, memory card slot, USB port, FM tuner, kickstand, rear-facing camera, Blu-ray, OLED display... ;)

Anybody with any sense would have recognized the current iPad as an early adopters machine. Besides correctly written software won't have an issue. Also all current games clearly indicate hardware requirements, its the nature of the beast.

Dave

I always thought the current iPad was just a very public developer preview, after all they wouldn't have a chance to do a non-public preview.
For the reason you noted it forces software for the platform to be written correctly or tightly even as the platform expands. Which is why it won't be a surprise if the first upgrade is in the 6-9months range and that will set the time frame for it's yearly update.

Plus the success of the device so far makes an update soon more likely.

I still find it funny people got upset that something might get updated, like that some how makes the device they have less useful than when they decided it was useful enough to pay for it the first time.

a lot of claims for one post. i hope half of that comes true. especially the appletv, but it seems that it would need some sort of hard drive or flash memory to hold the apps and such. i guess we'll see.

Let be real

Think about this... Verizon admitted to have been given the opportunity to carry the iPhone on verizon. They denied it. Think of any verizon phone... on what phone do you not see a verizon logo on the phone, in the start up, on your home screen. What phone do you not have a "verizon store" or in the case of the droids a section in the market called "verizon." Apple would never let a company band within the phone or on the phone except for the little service area at the top left of the home screen.

Verizon doesnt allow what Apple wants to do, which is let Apple run the phone. Verizon manages all updates, ATT does not. Apple dispatches all of their updates. When you get an update for your droid, its dispatched from the Verizon servers, not Motorola or HTC.

I could see a CDMA iPad like they rumored about testing, but not an iPhone, just doesnt seem possible. but thats just me.

Am I totally mistaken, or is simultaneous voice and data impossible on Verizon's current network? Wouldn't it be uncharacteristic of Apple to release an iPhone lacking one of the major benefits of the platform?

You mean like the first gen iPhone? Or every other iPhone for people living in 3G-less areas?

Didn't all the rumors about the original ipads specs say it would feature the cortex 9 chip, most of them already speculated before release it would also have at least 512mb ram. They were wrong before.

So it's not like we are hearing any new rumors here.

Basically at this stage with the iPad still not fully released worldwide, and with supply constraints still in place, if we see a 7" revision, before year end, v.early next - the chances of any significant hardware changes other than the screen size is very unlikely until at least May - June next year.

I was always curious about what the deal was with iOS 4 for iPad not being released til this fall. Are there going to be new models for this fall?

Right now the iPad feels like my iPhone 3GS did until iOS4 came out: great hardware that is being completely unsupported with software. iOS 3.2 for iPad does not feel at all optimized for the form factor, besides that it doesn't have the key multitasking feature.

As far as a 7" iPad: this is a no brainer to me. My favorite tech site, Ars Technica, which is usually spot on, for some reason believes that there's no chance of a 7" iPad. Have they ever held an iPad? Its pretty heavy and not that ergonomic to hold as reading material. If they could reduce the weight proportionately, a 7" iPad would be the preferred formfactor for readers. With the same screen resolution, you wouldn't even be giving up that much. Plus, Apple's margins on iPads are sky-high. With a smaller model they could do afford to keep the 9.7" model at current prices while also making huge margins on a slightly cheaper smaller model.

Some things to remember

1) As mentioned earlier in the thread, the A4 was not Apple's chip. It was designed by Intrinsity and already in production by Samsung as the Hummingbird. When Apple bought Intrinsity, the A4 became "their" chip - but the design is still licensed to Samsung, so it isn't exclusive. What IS exclusive, is Intrinsity's souped-up Cortex A9 design - and the most likely reason that Apple felt the need to buy Intrinsity and lock-up this processor. The A9-based iPad/iPhone/iPod touch are coming.

2) The future AppleTV was previously rumored to be smaller, iOS based and with minimal internal storage. This (along with Apple's unknown plans for its new data-center) has caused many fans to freak-out about having to stream everything from Apple over their broadband connection. Currently, I store some movies on my 160GB ATV so that they're available if my laptop is off - but everything else I stream from the laptop. Remember that the same original rumor mentioned the possibility of streaming from a Time Capsule directly to the ATV. Best case scenario: Apple makes an inexpensive home iTunes server and we can stream to multiple $99 thin-client ATV's throughout the house.

As to whether Apple will move to AMD for the ATV? It's possible - but the Cortex A9 chip will be more than powerful enough to decode 1080p.

3) The 7" iPad makes a lot of sense to me. Assuming that it keeps the same 4:3 ratio screen and a screen with a bezel that takes up ~20% of the total height and width, a 7" (screen diagonal) iPad would be ~5"x7". This would fit in a large pocket, even with a case. As mentioned above, it would fit in a lady's purse. It would fit in the pocket of my white coat in the hospital.

Unfortunately, I don't see a Retina display coming to the iPad anytime soon - the equivalent 326ppi display for a 7" 4:3 screen is 1826x1370. Even with the Cortex A9 (2GHz, multicore), that seems like a lot of pixels to push for the near future. We should expect 512MB RAM (minimum), gyroscopes, HSUPA, front-facing camera, etc. as the iPhone 4 has raised the bar on iDevices.

I think apple TV needs to be completely revamped so I'm excited to see what they do, and to see if they actually make a product worth buying this time. I really hope they include HDMI, it would be stupid if they didn't. I'm tired of hearing iPhone Verizon rumors they are never true and at this point are just annoying. Its like the boy who cried wolf you can only get excited so many times before you become completely numb to the idea.

How old is your apple tv? My apple tv has hdmi.

I couldnt agree with you anymore

A 7" iPad huh? The iPad itself already has a problem with finding it's niche. Never mind a 7" version. To top it all off, a Verizon iPhone huh? Hasn't that been brought up every year since the iPhone has been out? Lol. I guess if you keep talking about it and wishing hard enough it may eventually come true?

iPad is outselling all netbooks combined, so your first assertion is utterly wrong. Apple is selling them as quickly as they can make them. And your utter ignorance of today's market realities in your Verizon comment confirms to me that you have no idea what you're talking about.

I like the sound of a 7" iPad, personally. I skipped out on the first-gen, perhaps the second gen iPad will be worth the purchase :)

As for a CDMA iPhone... I really hope Apple looks beyond only AT&T and Verizon, and considers selling phones on any carrier. They already have a GSM phone and if they add a CDMA, what's to stop them from offering it on T-mobile, AT&T, Sprint, US Cellular and Verizon? (I'm pulling for Sprint, I just switched to an EVO, and while I like it a lot, I miss iOS)

Apple needs to offer the iPhone on all carriers to compete effectively with the android phones. Aside from the fact that not everyone is pleased with AT&T, there are many areas which simply are not served by AT&T and hence Apple have no chance at all of selling an iPhone to those people.

It would be incredibly poor design work not to have the new iPhone be basically modular in design so that any cell phone parts can simply be put onto a circuit board within the physical limitations of the case and hence made available to any carrier. Other cell phone manufacturers have managed to offer handsets for virtually all carriers for years. (I do hope that the day of exclusivity to a particular carrier is coming to an end across the board. It is an anti-competitive practice which the DOJ is investigating.)

...and the metal back iPhone :/ unless they still stick a piece of glass on top of that metal back it's gonna look like the 1st generation iPhone...

I had the 2G iPhone for nearly 3 years and I like the metal back very much. Except it looks like it's really easy to dent.

A rumor elsewhere suggested that there is a backplane antenna design involved.

Retina display is completely contingent on viewing distance. I would argue that the viewing distance of the iPad is normally double that of the iPhone.

Define "just over the horizon." If iPad updates will be out in September, I don't want to buy one right now. If they won't be out until March, I want to buy one right now.

Here's where the certainty of a yearly product cycle (a la iPhone or iPod) would be good for me as a consumer. It would really help me make purchasing decisions.

The iPad was almost instantly "obsolete" with the release of the iPhone 4. I think it fairly clear that Apple wanted to be "first to market", with the iPad, but was not ready with the Corex 9 based chips (worked over by their new acquisition). It is thought that the A4 is a barely worked over version of Samsung's ARM processor. There seems to be a convergence of the need to update the iPad and get a replacement iPhone out the door, breaking with the annual cycle. I question that Apple can "do nothing" about the iPhone 4 for a year without continuing to receive a lot of very pointed criticism. The January/February 2011 time frame also seems to coincide with the expected end of the exclusivity agreement with AT&T. (You will note that AT&T has been making a number of SEC type releases indicating that the loss of the iPhone exclusivity deal would not adversely impact the company's revenue stream.)

The iPhone 4 design was well along by the time that Papermaster actually got on board at Apple last year. The latest speculation is that he simply did not get on with Steve and so was shown the door (gee! what a surprise). The other people involved with the antenna fiasco have yet to be shown the door, but are rumored to be on the way out.

So, it just makes sense that there be a new iPad and iPhone after Christmas.
