Apple is no longer expected to announce any new Apple silicon Macs during the remainder of this year, according to reports. With no new Macs on the horizon for 2022, Apple's product lineup is "set" for the rest of the year, according to the company's CEO Tim Cook. Now, all eyes are on 2023.

Apple released many new products in 2022, including a completely redesigned MacBook Air, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro, new iPads, the Apple Watch Ultra, and more. One product missing from Apple's list of 2022 announcements is the company's long-rumored AR/VR headset, which has been in development for several years.

The development of Apple's headset, which may be called "Apple Reality Pro," has ramped up in the last year, and Apple's finally expected to unveil the headset next year after multiple delays. According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, a reliable source for supply chain-related information, Apple will announce the headset in a few months' time during an event in January of 2023.

Other reliable sources have all indicated the headset will be announced sometime next year. Still, other than Kuo's report, no further information on when exactly Apple may decide to announce it has been reported. If Kuo's information is proven accurate, it would be the first Apple event in January since a special event in 2010, where Steve Jobs announced the iPad.

The headset will be Apple's biggest product announcement since the original Apple Watch, so Apple may decide to dedicate an entire event to the headset rather than including it at another event, such as WWDC.

For the last three years, a headset reveal at WWDC has remained a possibility since the announcement of the headset will likely include the revealing of realityOS, an entirely new operating system and platform for developers that will run on Apple's future AR/VR products.

Apple's last event of 2022 was in September for the iPhone 14, the new AirPods Pro, and a new lineup of Apple Watch models. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported last month that Apple had canceled plans to hold another event this fall in October dedicated to new iPads and Mac models. In a recent Power On newsletter, Gurman said that Apple held off with another event this year to save "marketing energy for the Reality Pro headset debut next year."

When the headset does get announced, it could be one of Apple's most expensive products. The headset is expected to be a niche product targeted at developers and high-end professionals, with a price tag of around $3,000. Apple is already working on a cheaper model of the headset, which will be followed by a pair of augmented reality glasses later this decade.

I'd bet money that it will be AR, nor VR. Especially after looking at Meta!

I’m hoping that the $3000 price tag is just misinformation leaked by Apple to make the actual price seem more palatable. If you leak a price of $3k, $2499 or $1999 don’t seem as bad.
I don’t know, the Mac Studio Max is basically a $3600 computer (if you also have to buy a 5k monitor for it) and while I want one I’m not buying one.

Can't wait to see Craig and Tim bump into each other on stage wearing those goggles all the while waving their arms furiously to shoe away those big imaginery blo flies buzzing around them. Could be interesting and entertaining.
I want to see biometric validation fail again

I'm just looking forward to it because the sooner they announce it, the sooner we can finally stop using that awful concept image...
That’s all they have “the same image”.
As mentioned it’s not for the masses, even Adobe has just been promoting its Aero app, and 5 other 3D creation apps - those are extra not part of their Creative Cloud. It might be useful for some industry such as architect, interior designers and wedding planners. Lol

I think there's a huge difference. People's discretionary income is getting absolutely hammered. Many people just don't have the money to go out and buy a toy.
Yea Original failed for no price subsidy, no installments, and you couldn't trade.

Today I can keep up with my cell because of trade deals. My new phone has zero installments. But I just can't get anything else. If I ever had the $$$, my next goal would be MBP 16 or an Air if they got large enough screens. Not a thousands dollars headset

I'm of the opinion that VR is a solution in search of a problem. So many companies have tried and failed in this arena.

I've seen reports that people in facebook hate the metaverse. I'm sure there's lots of varied reasons for that, but my take away is that its not enhancing someone's work but detracting.
Admittedly, I thought this about smartwatches. At minimum, they have to go down to less than $80 for me to bite, so that's not going to happen anytime soon. That, and I'd like to minimum the # of things I have to charge on a periodic basis.

However, if somebody can pull VR off, Apple's a contender! (like they did with their A-Watch).

I'm with you there! $3000 puts this headset into another category. The PS5 VR headset was announced at $550 today and the Meta Pro Headset is $1500. For what Apple is charging, you could buy a PS5, PSVR2 and a Meta Quest Pro and still have money left over for some games / apps. That being said, on a tech level, Apple is seems to be creating something that is truly cutting edge. This will probably be their first 3nm device and have more power and more efficiency than any other standalone headset.

The question still remains how Apple will market this and what use cases it will have. For $3000, this can't just be an entertainment device... At that price, it really needs to be a tool that can be used for content creation and work / business purposes in addition to recreational purposes.

I wouldn’t mind it if you were right, but if the cost of a unit is near what experts are speculating it will be even if a lot of people want to buy it not many can afford to. And I have yet to see someone give me an example where goggles are a huge advantage for an application use that most people encounter frequently. Someone else said that goggles are a solution in search of a problem that they are good for, and so far I agree with that description. Maybe Apple will have something truly unique and useful to show everyone but it needs to be unique, useful and affordable, and I’m not convinced that this is something that anyone can achieve now.

"I have yet to see someone give me an example where goggles are a huge advantage for an application use that most people encounter frequently"

How about seeing a movie in your own IMAX screen in the comfort of your house?
How about watching a basketball game right in the courtyard?
How about playing Mario Bros like you were actually Mario?
How about experiencing ancient Rome instead of reading a book about it?
How about exploring Paris instead of looking it in Google Earth?
How about kids exploring the human body in the next science class, instead of looking it on a text book?
How about enjoying a Celine Dion concert like you are right there instead of watching it on YouTube?

I know things are much better to experience in person, like a concert, a basketball game or traveling to Paris, but you can have the option of doing all this at a fraction of the cost.

If they do release it next year, it’ll be when the recession is in full swing.

Probably not the best time to launch an overpriced toy with limited benefits.

Also, a metaverse with only a handful of rich single guys doesn’t sound like much fun if you ask me.
Corporate profits are breaking records.
if its positioned to the creative types to boost productivity, even more corporate white collar profits.

How about the VR headset being only a peripheral device, leaving all the computing power to the iPhone you already own? That would bring the cost way down.

if apple never releases something that concept will be associated with apple forever. if i were tim i would release something for that alone.

It will be their biggest product announcement since the iPhone in 2007.

One thing we can say: the way they've been hyping AR for the longest time at every possibile interview, it sure looks like they believe that will be case.

I mean this is Apple's CFO five (!) years ago in a random non-techy interview

And countless interviews by Tim Cook himself in the subsequent years would contain similar remarks.

How about seeing a movie ...
You have some good points there but the killer application is sex. I'm not sure what that means in the VR and AR worlds exactly but if Apple's history is anything to go by, they're not going to lead with anything X-rated. People don't want to go to business meetings in VR; they want to smoosh naughty bits with strangers.

Don't confuse ar with vr. They are entirely different products and target audience

Well, sex is under the category of thinks that are better in person. Bussiness meetings in VR however, I guess will be better that those awfull Zoom meetings... I hate those.

so that's what they're announcing?
They are announcing the hardware where all those things are possible. The app developers though are the ones who will make those things happen, and much more. If you can imagine it, there will probably be an app for that.

Fair enough. And never said I’d buy one ;-)
