Right now, AR/VR is pretty dead. Meta's VR glasses are selling quite well, but Meta is not looking to make a profit and loses money on each pair.

The Apple glasses could be a big failure, and I think Tim is aware of that.

I'd argue that it's "dead" not because of the concept, but because it's too far ahead of its time. Until we get technology that will enable all day battery life in a really slim form with a constant network connection, these glasses won't gain much traction.

AR has the potential to be huge. I have enjoyed VR gaming, it is super immersive, but also a hassle with weighty headsets, cables everywhere, technical issues etc. It is still in it’s infancy. World building in VR is a massive undertaking, and graphics cards are only now approaching realistic levels of rendering.
AR is different, it is all about overlaying the real world with digital extra’s. It is a different challenge, because you need the computer to be able to ‘see and understand’ the world… and that is the same challenge that self driving cars have. See the convergence?

Whether Apple will be the one making AR accessible for the masses or not is way to early to tell. Google made their glasses and ended up with a PR nightmare, even though it is in principal a very cool gadget. I think Apple will go slow and deliberately market this as a development tool so creative pros can start developing cool applications.
Cheap wearable AR in normal glasses will take a while I think, the tech doesn’t seem there yet. But if Apple commits to the high end version, they must be onto something I think.

Don't confuse ar with vr. They are entirely different products and target audience
AR, VR, MR and XR are already one thing. All of the current devices offer full passthrough and this new generation of devices is doing this very well.

They are announcing the hardware where all those things are possible. The app developers though are the ones who will make those things happen, and much more. If you can imagine it, there will probably be an app for that.
i'm asking because the one thing i mostly want is a good working device to watch movies with..
that won't overheat, have great visual hardware, decent battery, and good agronomics...
right now there's still nothing that tik all the boxes.

It is dead simply because people don‘t want to have it. Nobody wants to wear goggles all the time.

Meta has brought in iover 6 Billion on the Quest 2 alone. They are pouring money into development and buying up VR companies as fast as they can. Only in tha sense are they losing money on the product.

I prefer it to reading glasses (which are not necessary with these devices). 5 monitors wherever you go is simply awesome. That feature alone will convert all multi monitor users.

Meta sold some million Quest 2 devices, which is remarkable. But the whole Meta universe is a crazy bet and Meta has burned 15 billion dollars at least. And Meta is going to burn even more money.
Also Apple could invent the killer application, yes indeed.

But if you look at AR/VR right now, it is dead.

No idea what you’re talking about.
Im just saying that modern Apple is failing at the very basics. Why spend a Billion Dollars making the Apple watch and then gimp it with 24hr battery life. My love for Apple has long since gone due to their nickel and diming and lack of interested in innovation just borderline iteration. This is not the Apple I used to love!

The metaverse dream ended as quickly as it started. It could still happen but they need to get the price down to $15 and a free lip gloss to get the public interested.

How are they actively gimping the Apple Watch? Do you know of a technology that can power a minicomputer on your wrist for a significant longer time? And don’t mention the Garmin watches, they ar NOT the same thing.

Tim Cook is not the one who has "one more thing." While Steve Jobs was a visionary leader, Tim Cook is just a money guy. If the AR/VR glasses fail, it would show that Apple is no longer able to innovate without Jobs.

Anyone else remember people thinking “I don’t think this has a reason to exist or market for such a product line” about tablets in 2009/2010? I’m not saying history is repeating itself, but it looks like history is repeating itself hahahhahah

I'd imagine Apples headset will be how most people access Zucks metaverse. A bit like how lots of people use their iPhone for Whatsapp/Instagram/Facebook

Huawei has 7 day battery in their 42mm watch and 14-day battery in their 46mm watch. Both use AMOLED screens and are feature comparable to the Apple/Googe/Samsung watch.

You mean when using the power saving mode on the Huawei? Granted, that is a trick the Apple Watch only recently learned.

Nope thats normal mode. You dont need power saving mode on a GT series watch. Ive never used it on my GT 2. Honestly Its really is magic how they can do this and Apple/Samsung/Google cant? Honestly I don't get it. Its literally bullet point No 1 and another Tech companies has show you exactly how to do it. Kills me!

Event for the AR/VR definitely but what is there to talk about for the other devices

I doubt we’ll see 3nm then, that goes against the apple trend of the last few years, especially for the more niche pro devices. I think it’ll just be M2 variants.

So all those macs will just be spec bumps in my view with M2 variants.
I agree… we haven’t had a great “one more thing” in a very long time!’

I'm of the opinion that VR is a solution in search of a problem. So many companies have tried and failed in this arena.

I've seen reports that people in facebook hate the metaverse. I'm sure there's lots of varied reasons for that, but my take away is that its not enhancing someone's work but detracting.
In 2023 and several coming years, I still don't see a use case of VR. Honestly, Apple just should scrape the headset. Jony Ive was totally right on the point of AR Glass.

It’s cool to go on the computer it’s not cool for the computer to go on you.

Prince saw it coming. Companies like Facebook were coming for all our data, our thoughts and then our lives.

He was brave enough to say it at an event sponsored by Yahoo. No way FB would ever allow anyone to say that at an event they sponsor.
