just use the unregistered finger

use it a few times, and then it'll ask you to enter password.

I reach that stage even with a registered finger (touch ID is not super accurate).

optionally, you can try using using any finger other than thumb and index finger for daily TouchID use and when you are forced by the cops, use thumb/index finger for touch id. It'll look normal. 5 attempts with touch id is all you need.

Use the wrong finger 5 times. It looks like the phone just isn't recognizing your fingerprint. After the 5th time, the ability to unlock your phone with Touch ID is completely removed, and you will have to enter your passcode to unlock.

Just a reminder: Use a complex password, not a 4 digit pin.

You can also use a longer numeric code. Making your pin 6 or 8 characters long (with, ideally, repeating digits) makes it next to impossible to guess. Also, easier to enter than a complex alphanumeric password.

Just slice your prints off.

Also, the police believe he videotaped himself strangling his girlfriend? WTF?!

So he strangled her with one hand and made the creepiest selfie video ever?

This has long been a problem with biometric only solutions and is the main reason why I have said they should pair it with a passcode.

The judge is nuts. Or the law is. Or this society is. What ever happened to "the intent of the law" or "the intent of Congress"? Either people can be compelled to log in to their phones or they can't be. Differentiating between knowledge of your passcode & fingerprint login is splitting hairs in a way that makes a mockery of "justice".

You really think they're not going to get your thumb on there first go?

Which is why, if you are a criminal, don't enroll either thumbs or index fingers. The chance they can successfully compel you to use the correct one quickly decreases if you aren't using those fingers. (because they will assume you did indeed enroll your thumb).

The difference is that a fingerprint is physical evidence. The police can compel you to hand over physical evidence, but not testimony. A password that exists only in your mind is testimony and you cannot be compelled to produce it. Write it down and it becomes evidence, and you can be forced to hand over the paper on which you wrote it.

seems like a simple solution. They can require you to supply a finger print but they do not have to require you to tell which finger print it is. That is part of the well I know what is it. Smart move would be set touch ID to some odd ball finger like your ring finger. All they will require you to touch your phone to unlock it use the wrong finger or press on it incorrectly. Fail a few times and boom moves to back up.

When I first read that, I thought you had put a different word that starts with p that identifies a part of the male anatomay and I was going to say I don't think TouchID works like that... I'm glad I was mistaken.

That's not a half bad idea, I'm sure theres some sort of print touchID would pick up down there... Just register that! Nobody would figure it out!

There's no way to differentiate an iPhone that's locked with Touch ID versus an iPhone that's locked with a passcode. You can still enter a passcode to unlock a phone locked with Touch ID.

Thus, all you have to say is that you "slide to unlock" your phone with a passcode. Then refuse to give the passcode.

Problem solved.

I might be worthwhile for Apple to provide an option for a 2 factor device unlock process for those extremely concerned about security/privacy. For example, the standard passcode on reboot must be a complex passcode and thereafter you must dual authenticate using both Touch ID and a simple passcode.

Apple should let us enroll a "distress finger". So that when it is used it wipes the device.

That is an amazing idea and one that I hope they will implement or maybe jailbreak will have this tweak?

We should all in droves provide Apple with the feedback that we'd like this feature where we setup a specific finger that if used, will force you to use a passcode to unlock it.

America is the best place for murderes and pedophiles. We hold to our absolute bogus liberties to aide criminals. Everyone should come to America and start conmitting terrible crimes because the ACLU will protect a murderes rights for free

I might like to add this is why biometrics is not very good as a catch all to protecting something.

The best protection is something you know (password) and something you have. The something you have has been moving to biometrics as you always have that. It makes it a lot harder to break into something when it requires 2 pieces of information.
