    I have an Mac Pro 8-Core 2.93Ghz
    Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed: 2.93 GHz
    Number of Processors: 2
    Total Number of Cores: 8
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per Processor): 8 MB
    Memory: 48 GB
    Processor Interconnect Speed: 6.4 GT/s

I want to upgrade the CPU can I use 2 x Intel W3680 Xeon 3.33GHz?

    Please advise

No. W series Xeon is for the single CPU board. You will want either e5645 for 2.45ghz or any of the X5600 series in order to maintain the dual CPU config.

Just match the sockets. If both match, good to go. They have to be both Server parts.

I use izotope RX2 for 24bit /192 audio rendering and Handbreak

Just a warning, if you saw the price for the W processor, im afraid the dual processor capable Xeons are expensive. Ebay is probably the cheapest way to find them, but they are still pricey. Also, use the search button in this forum, you will find tons of threads about upgrade options.

Also be aware you question of what is faster than your 2.93....well, you adding a total of 5 more cores to your arsenal which even if you choose a lower clock speed might benefit you if your program uses all the cores. You do the math.

take this warning. I didnt see that you had a 2009. 2009 = lidless, 2010 = has lides

I have no experience with 5500 series xeons. As I stated before I didnt realize he was looking for a 2009 upgrade. I assumed 2010 as the Wseries he listed was newer and seemed like he was asking if it would work. Had I seen he has a 2009 I wouldnt have commented.

You may be right. However given the W series he provided in his OP I believe he may be looking for a 6 core processor. And the W5590 you listed is a 4core CPU

is the power supply in the mac pro juicy enough to power 2x 130W cpu (X5690) in a 2009 2.26 quad core mac pro?

The W5590 (TDP of 130W) has successfully been used in the dual 2.26 2009 MP and there are threads about it in this forum, look for one started by gugucom. Actually, I have just received a pair of W5590s and am planning to do the upgrade myself when I find some time...
