Also, with Macbooks and everything being soldered or glued, after the 1 year, if your keyboard goes on that 16", that's a huge cost since the entire top deck get's replaced. .

It is actually pretty reasonable. That would be a top case replacement, the same thing they do for a battery replacement runs from $129 to $199, depending upon size and age of the MBP. For that they replace the Al case where you hands rest, keyboard, trackpad, and battery. Labor is included with the price.

Well that's fairly reasonable, I thought it was still north of $400-500, mind you I am in Canada so it's probably $279-299 here, haven't checked.

I don't believe AppleCare will cover your screen breakage. Apple considers that as accidental damage which is not covered under ordinary AppleCare. You would need AppleCare + which for you is too late to purchase. Sorry, I have no idea how much screen replacement will cost.

Yep, and for AppleCare+, if you buy it later than initial purchase, they won't activate it until they have verified that the system is in perfect condition already. (To make sure people don't just buy it when they damage it.)

Yep. And they probably add GST and PST. But then you probably don't pay $1,900/mo for healthcare for two with a $8,000 deductible like we do in the states.

Nope. The screen has nothing to do with the top case. This is going to be around $600-800 US.

Top case replacement on a 2016 15" MBP was quoted at US$478 as of October 23, 2019. ($399 part, $79 labor). I had AppleCare so it was free, but that's the price mentioned.

Yeah, the cost of the part depends on what they're replacing it for. If it's replacement due to battery it's treated as a battery cost rather than top case cost.

I do believe that they're able to replace the battery without replacing the entire topcase now, but I don't know if that applies to all models.

I know this was confirmed for new air, not seen a note either way on the MBP's, so it's possible this changed with 16"

OP seems to have disappeared.
His choices seem to be:
a. Live with the damage
b. Pay the $700 or so for the repair.
c. Put it into the closet and buy a new one.

How thick was this blanket?

Did you press down on the top lid thinking it would force the thing to close?

Not scolding, genuinely curious

Ive had a blanket or something like it snag closing the laptop on my 13" non touch bar before, but nothing that resulted in cracking

yikes

Couldn't imagine not fixing that on a brand new multithousand dollar computer, regardless.

That’s going to sting. The entire display will have to be replaced, and they’re not cheap. £800 parts and labour for my 15” repair last year. Thankfully at Apple’s expense.

For the cost I'd probably just live with it. These are tools after all. Definitely a real bummer.

I hit a flying truck tire tread on the freeway last week. My perfect car now has a crack on the bumper. :(

Sigh.

Happened to me dozens of times with my 2013 Macbook. The only thing that broke down were 3 keycaps when I attempted to take them out in order to clean them. It has some scratches here and there, some metal bumps, but that's it, honestly.

Say what you want, but this would've been a non-issue with the pre 2016 MacBooks. This kind of issue is just laughable for a machine with that kind of a price tag. And in the language of a user experience/industrial designer, which Apple considers themselves to excel at, the word "user error" doesnt exist. Every so called "user error" other than deliberate damage is one more opportunity to iterate on the design, and therefore a design error.

But I don't expect much from this company anymore. Ironically enough I'll keep buying their products, since they still outperform their competition and I'm bound to Sketch. I'm gonna stick to the cheapest options/configurations possible though, until Apple gets their **** together again (which most likely will never happen with the new management style)

I don't think the previous laptops were inherently less prone to physical damage. I've had a 2016 MBP and now a 2018 MBP. The 2016 suffered a few accidents including a drop from 3 feet off a bed with the lid wide open onto a low pile carpeted floor. It not only survived, but didn't appear to be any worse for the wear. Had I dropped my much heavier 2012 Unibody that way, the hinge of the screen would have snapped.

I'm also not saying the earlier MBP models were worse. They just had different vulnerabilities and strengths.
