Yes, I have that sound as well when opening/using the camera.
I managed to get an appointment in about 3 hours. I will let you guys know what they say
Yes thank you, maybe you could try to reproduce the speaker noise with their iPhones 17 PM to see if they all do that or not

I also had a call with Apple support. They informed me that someone else had reported the same issue yesterday and had already added my case to the existing report. The information has been forwarded to the developers in the US, and I should expect a response within five business days. Perhaps we should all reach out to Apple support to emphasize the significance of this case.

I am curious to see what Apple has to say both this and if it is an actual hardware issues or a software issue.

I could be totally wrong here, but it sure is looking like a hardware issue as RFI from cellular transceiver or even wifi transceiver is causing noise when apps use the speaker.

I am looking at this from the perspective of an amateur radio operator that has to deal with RFI and EMI issues all of the time.

I just ordered the standard iPhone 17 which should arrive in a couple of days. I will definitely be watching for this to see if its only the Pro Max or all iPhone 17s that have this issue.

So quick update. I got a replacement device and have to set it up tonight.
My “genius” was trying everything and went through all the diagnostics, from software to hardware, with the focus on the speakers. It was so loud, so he went to a quit room to listen to the sound. After a few minutes a few other colleagues were interested in this case.
Everything was fine with the tests, but everyone heard that sound. One guys suggested, that it has something to do with the magnets inside the speaker or maybe there are some bad alignments inside. Either way, they tried everything and were pretty clueless what causes that sound.
They wrote it down and will report it back internally.
I will report back, if the sound is still there on my replacement phone.
I couldn’t replicate that sound in the store because of the loudness there.

The sound in the camera was declared as normal sound because of the stabilizer and everything else inside the camera module. So it should be fine.

There are multiple threads about this issue on Apple Support, Reddit and Macrumors forums. It is clearly a fairly common issue with the 17 Pro/Max, and I wonder if it affects all of these devices under the right conditions: sufficiently high power charger, quiet environment, good hearing…

I’ve owned every generation of iPhone since the 3G (every Pro Max since that came out), and I have never had this issue until my 17 Pro Max. It’s pretty bad, especially when an app that uses the speaker is open. When I listen to my 16 Pro Max side-by-side it’s very obvious the 17 Pro Max has an issue.

I hope this gets some press coverage soon, and I hope even more that there can be some software fix / mitigation by Apple so I don’t have to live with it all year.
Been on my 14 pro for some time. Don’t remember if stated after update or anything. Don’t use under the ‘conditions’ that much so haven’t addressed. Tried recording once. Unable.

Well looking forward to see if your new unit has the issue too or not keep us updated

Do they have an exact replacement model that’s instantly available? It would be interesting to hear if the same sounds come out when you plug it in.

I just set it up and guess what? That sound is still there. So either large batches of iPhones have this “problem” or it’s simply “normal” with the 17 PM and only we geeks notice it because it matters to us.

It still sounds quite unusual, but if it’s safe, I hope I’ll eventually tune it out or stop noticing it. Or eventually there will be a software update with some kind of a fix.

As for my replacement, I was quite lucky, at least with the device itself, since it was the only replacement iPhone they had and it turned out to be brand new rather than refurbished.

Yeah, it's strange. We'll see how it works out. I voted +1 in the thread — maybe if it gets more attention, there will be an article to highlight it even more, so Apple can check that based on the feedback. I don't think we're the only ones.

Lots more people popping up on Reddit about this too, hopefully get some more info from Apple. Not going to swap devices yet as any that I’ve seen have found the new device to have the same sound.

Seems to be dependant on the wattage of the charger, lower wattage less noise

I’ve noticed the noise when using an Apple Magsafe charger but as this is lower wattage the sound is very low

Yeah I just finished setting up my new exchanged Pro Max… and the noise is still there ! So yeah I guess they all have it, hope a software update will do. At the Genius Bar they tested everything it was a hassle, then they told me they never heard about this issue so we documented it as much as possible, then the guy told me if it’s still there it might be software - and anyway covered later by warranty. So…

The bottom speaker on my 17 Pro Max, (along with other 17s from what I've heard) makes a faint hissing and crackling sound when charging the phone or listening to content on very low volumes. I've heard this could be the sound of electrical interference between another component and the speaker.

Albeit this sound is extremely quiet and imperceptible unless I hold the bottom speaker up to my ear, I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing this. Not really sure if it's worth bringing in for service this early into owning the phone... I want to treat it like a non-issue but this phone also came with a tiny scratch from the factory

Static noises when charging my 17PM:

When the phone has the charger plugged in and while using intensive applications like YouTube, Facebook, Twitter or TikTok I can hear these static electric buzzing noises coming from the bottom speaker. The top speaker also has some kind of buzz but not as audible. I have even noticed when the charger is plugged in and the phone is locked I can hear these static noises aswell. I also tried unplugging the charger and can also hear some buzz but barely audible.

Replicating the problem:

1. Goto a quiet room
2. Plug the charger into your iPhone
3. Open up an intensive application like Twitter etc
4. Put you ear onto the bottom speaker
5. You will hear static noises when scrolling

Static noises when opening Camera:

I have also discovered when I open the Camera and put my ear onto where the camera lens/flash is I can hear static noises aswell.

Replicating the problem:

1. Goto a quiet room
2. Plug the charger into your iPhone
3. Open the Camera
4. Place your ear onto the camera lens/flash
5. You will hear a static hissing noise

Does everyone owning the 17PM also get both these problems listed above happening aswell? What could these static noises be caused by? Why hasn’t Apple said anything or addressed these widespread issues?

We need an official response from Apple on this matter. It is unacceptable that there are so many reports and no comment from them on the issue. Yesterday, I went to the Apple Store in Mexico City, and they refused to give me a replacement because they still don't have any replacement devices here. They only mentioned that they had “investigated” and that there are already several cases mentioning the same thing and that they would be waiting for a statement, but there is no date for this.

I’m still trying to be patient. I do a lot with video on a Smallrig and when using the device microphone it’s creating issues because this noise is picked up. My phones have always been almost exclusively charging their entire time and this is the first time this has ever occurred.

@FAILGATE I also have both noise issues (charging and the Camera app). However, when I reported it to Apple, they prioritized charging sounds. Regarding the sound from the Camera app, they only asked if it was only in that app or also in the Messenger, Whatsapp camera etc. but it happens in all of them. I've noticed that camera noise is much less reported online. Anyway, they want to take my phone for inspection and possibly disassemble.
