Then her company probably wouldn’t want her husband to have direct access to sensative information

You probably didn’t understand my message. The emphasis was on the gender and the assumption that only HE could be the one working. I was just trolling but I have to be very careful in using a gender neutral language in my firm. I think it helps but sometimes some people can go overboard.

Somebody with more than four fingers, I'd imagine. That about covers most of Apple's customers.

Up to five fingers. They gave the option. It wasn't mandatory to register five and it doesn't imply it was meant for multiple users.

If humans had three heads, I imagine Face ID would also support multiple faces, but not for the intended purpose of being used by multiple users.
But the point is that it doesn't matter really what implied limitation Apple would wish to place on Touch ID - if I want to let someone else authenticate my iPhone then I can. Not much Craig Federghi can do to stop me.

Equally, I can just give my passcode to anyone I'd like to have access to my phone. Currently stands at 4 people!

It can't. That's why I had to sign a declaration. It's an honor system, I guess...

In that case the reality is that the Bank's 'declaration' is just security theatre. TouchID is an alternative to entering a password... which could be shared. Plus, many apps and all website on the iDevices can now share saved password. What is the difference between authentication via TouchID and passwords? Convenience.

If that’s the case then can Craig please explain why Touch ID is used to switch user accounts on the MacBook with touchbar?
Up until they implemented TouchID on the 2016 MBP, TouchID was only intended for multiple fingers of one person. Happy now? It impossible to proof that before the 2016 MBP, Apple designed TouchID with the goal of allowing multiple people to authenticate with the device. But given that iOS didn't have any multi-user features when TouchID was introduced (and still has only very limited ones, and only for remotely managed iOS devices), the notion that TouchID was designed with one user in mind sounds pretty plausible.

Touch ID was never intended for multiple users? That's B.S. They built Touch ID to support five fingers. Who is going to register five of their own fingers for Touch ID?!
Except for those not having gotten around to it yet (or those who registered fingers from multiple people), why would anybody not register both of their thumbs and index fingers? In one-handed use, the thumb is the only practical finger, and when sitting on a surface, the index finger is the most practical fingers.

Too bad Face ID authentication of non-identical family members is accidental. Non-issue with Touch ID.

Too bad that has never been proven true.

Who has two thumbs and registers five of their own fingers?

I registered 4 out of 10 of mine. Both thumbs and both pointing fingers.

I did the same and I did my right thumb twice as it was the finger I usually used to unlock my phone. Additional reads of the same finger helps ensure the read is less finicky. Ideally I would have done one of my thumb in summer and one in winter when it's much drier.

Now I have Face ID and am quite pleased. I've had a couple of mis-reads, but not to the point of having to enter my password. I have noticed that Face ID seems a bit more finicky when logging into apps (like banking) then it does to just unlock the phone. I wonder if that's real or just my perception?

If that was a real question - I guess you mean me? I have had four different fingers registered since I first started using a 5s. Fifth position is for my nose. (Yes, my nose), when I have my furry gloves on. :D

I wonder if any nose could open your phone? I may have to test this.

WOW! I wondered but figured that you could do multiple faces on the iPhone X. Chalk that up to one more regression. I'm in the same boat as the email sender. My wife and I (even my daughter) access each other's phones for various reasons. Not being able to quickly access one or the other device in an emergency when you're flustered is not cool. Touch ID was superior in this regard.
If you are able to remember the other person's passcode, you still have access to the device in an emergency (and if such access is used only rarely, the imposition of having to type the passcode isn't that bad, being able to remember an infrequently used passcode is the bigger problem).

Sort of explains why iPad still has no user managing in the year 2017. PC replacement my ass
It would be nice if it did have it, but pc personal computer, not everyone shares their devices. “I”pad.

I’m just saying that’s the intention of the device, but it would be nice if it had multiple users

I registered 4 fingers, both thumb and pointer of both hands.

It does but only for schools - in my kids school, they get swap at the end of each session - teachers clear up and its ready for the next student

I don't know why so many people are making a huge deal out of this request. It helps support the workflow for other people like the OP and it wouldn't force you to use this same workflow. Seems like a no brainer to add it. I don't see the downside.

I mentioned this on other sites: the benefit of multiple finger registrations is it can be other people, however, since the device doesn't support multiple accounts, it's just a works-but-not-the-design-intent "side effect". I also had a discussion about the possibility of performance related issues (see the footnote for multiple finger registrations in Settings ...) for multiple face registrations (and what's the magic number, 2, 3, 4?)

I agree with Craig. You people need to learn to adapt, not everything in life is catered to you every want. If you're not happy with how FaceID is set up then either buy an iPhone with TouchID or buy an Android phone.

Multi-Face will be needed for the iPad. I hope they figure it out for the Pad before implementing it and pissing a lot of people off.

Am gonna test this.

Not sure how this applies to the primary use case, but Apple has created enabled multiple users on iPads to support the educational (student) use case.

My understanding is that they all have access to a same set of apps that were bulk-purchased by the schools, and don't the students all have their accounts centrally managed by a macOS Server Mac? Regular users probably won't want to deal with all that!
