Mental note: iOS is a "personal device" but only after iOS 8 when hardware security was introduced because it became standard with Apple only then. Before that, it was just a regular smart phone like everyone else's, so its only logical that this happens NOW.

I would have like to see Frederighi to say this back then ? he can't.

Not that privacy and security aren't important, but if u never take into account the "change" i reckon that in itself an important issue which would decide the case.
Changes and improvements in technology happen incrementally; just because older iPhones and versions of iOS were more "hack-able" than they are today doesn't negate the importance of what Apple (and the rest of the tech industry) is standing for right now.

Good on ya, Craig.

The FBI want to turn the clock back to 1984. If they succeed in doing so, they will be creating a legacy to Hitler. They must be stopped from doing so at all costs.

Privacy and freedom go hand in hand with human dignity and our deepest moral values. Lose either, and you lose the essence of the human spirit.

The FBI is perfectly entitled to take reasonable steps to ensure your safety and security and I demand the FBI has access to anybody's phone who might compromise those states. This is just plain old common sense it today's world.
This, to me, is what we as a free society really should be afraid of. Whatever it takes to make me feel safe; I don't care if civil liberties need to be trampled, just a bit, to make me feel that way, regardless of how effective such access would actually be at making us safer.

don't know about you guys but the next time i go to a barber i'm gonna tell him to give me a haircut like Craig Federighi, so i can get some pus pus
I think what you're really looking for is your local animal shelter; cats and other animals that need homes are waiting for your love and attention, and they'll provide you the same. You might even inquire about fostering; it's a great way to help without making a lifetime commitment.

I'm so sick of this story. Can we just let it play out in the courts/congress. What more is there to say?

Apple can turn back time by selling a Mac Pro from 2014 in 2016.

Even more amazing, the new flagship iPhone in 2016 still comes in 16GB, the same size that was offered in 2009.

Time travel indeed.

I, for one, welcome MacRumor's thorough coverage of one of the most important topics of our time.

This is worrying because if Apple is forced to give in to one government it's forced to give in to them all. However this could all be a decoy and they have really unlocked it and we really have no privacy. Just a thought.

It's not. The government has proved time and time again they're too damn dumb to pull this off.

Better to keep fighting for your rights before they all disappear.

It's a damn lie when the FBI says this is only about one iPhone. What amazes me is no one is discussing the fact that the terrorists destroyed two personal cell phones to the point where the FBI is unable to get any information off those phones. They also removed a hard drive from their computer which to date has not been found.

I'm sure the terrorists didn't say "we won't destroy this iPhone because we trust Apple and Tim Cook to protect the data on it." If there was anything of value on this iPhone it would've been destroyed!

This court order is for one iPhone. This court order doesn't allow the FBI access to ALL iPhones. Yes the FBI will want access to other iPhones from future criminals but those will require their own court orders. Stop spreading lies.

No vested interest from Unkie Craig there... none at all.

He's applying FUD and scare tactics. Why doesn't he run for public office as a Republican? He'd fit right into that clown car.

And "endanger us all", really? Looking at all the lobbyists and games Apple has played, scapegoating groups of people it doesn't like, putting out defective products they knew had issues but then blaming the customers for the problem (the iPhone 4 antenna issue being one of the most public)...

Apple has been becoming a larger and larger joke.

Hear hear!!

There are other cases, each one only validated when appropriate and by court order. Government is not running around dictating every phone willy nilly-- never mind. These people would rather have Apple running the country and somehow think it will do a damn thing to fix it. It's cheaper to project blame, while offshoring and taking corporate welfare (likely to help pay for lobbyists to write the tax laws they have the guts to tell us they hate). Newsflash, Apple only gives a hoot about its ability to profit(eer) and will say or use anything to drum up support, which leads to customers. Marketing 101. Nothing more.

Apple must stop this myopic, hysterical posturing and act in a normal adult fashion.
Federighi's comments are just those of a bought man doing what bought men do.

You do know this would have global effects if Apple were to give in? This is much more than just what the FBI or any US law enforcement may want.

You're the one speading FUD. It's NOT about unlocking just one iPhone.

There have been many articles pointing this out - not sure why people keep believing this crud.

Yea but during a high profile case. You see. To say the FBI can order any company to do something them that no baring on the case! The FBI us trying to force Apple and found the perfect opportunity!

I think we need to strike a balance between privacy and security.
Those things are both on the same side in this case.

You and the person you replied to need to go back a few weeks and read the entire discussions on this subject and learn what the All Writs Act of 1789 is and how it works. Apple has already been ordered to do this by the judge. An AWA is filed pro-se. That means that only the government and judge need to be involved to issue the order.

Since this is a first of its kind case governoring modern technology the judge has allowed apple to respond. If this is decided in favor of the government, future AWA requests will likely not allow arguments from whomever is demanded to work for the government. Which means it wil be trivially easy for a government agency to file an AWA request and get a judge to sign off. This extended legal battle will not happen every time. That is not how the US legal system is designed. Judges will likely summarily dismiss any opposition to a writ application once the law is settled.

Fbi is the new pac man... Gobble gobble all our information till its game over.

Just so there is no confusion for anyone, the FBI is not independent, it's part of the the DOJ, a cabinet department of the executive branch, AKA The White House. FBI may be the new conduit for gov't attempt to easier access to private data, but Clinton first tried to bully electronics makers to build in a backdoor.

A few months ago, prior to this particular controversy, Obama invited Silicon Valley leaders to the WH for the sole purpose of asking them for a backdoor. That meeting utterly failed. It's not surprise that it was only then that gov'ts strong arming and public shaming started. Make no mistake, the FBI is not acting on its own here. It's getting its play calls from 1600.

No the FBI should stop being lazy and move into the modern era. They need to start using modern technology and change their investigative techniques. The old model no longer works in today's world. The NSA does just that..... They don't rely on yesterday's tech to solve today's crimes.

Sure I'm just saying as a media story I'm getting tired of it. We know what each side believes, there really isn't any new information coming out. What more is there to say on the subject?
