Why? Be specific, outlining his credentials and suitability.

He's doing a really good job as SVP Software. But that is far different than being a CEO of a company the size of Apple..

The Peter Principle is real — you can rise to your level of incompetence. The smart know where to stay put.

I don’t get the praises for this guy. iOS 11 has some severe bugs and a lot of unoptimization, it’s like it was “good enough” just release it .

They kind of did have a deadline....

Actually, I did answer your question. But here it is in other, more specific words so you can understand it better:

The "product guy" at Microsoft that was SVP of R&D before becoming CEO has increased Microsoft's revenue and market cap significantly since he's been CEO. Actually about to double what Microsoft pushed out annually under Steve Ballmer... that too in 3 years.

Craig's qualification isn't simply being a "product guy." It is being the SVP of Software for a $200B+/yr company with 120K employees, and being heavily involved in the company for almost a decade. You think just because he is in software engineering, he doesn't know anything else about Apple? The hardware? The services sector? The retail aspect? Even if he does, he doesn't need to know or be an expert in those sectors. Look at Tim Cook: he barely knows about products or software. (Okay, that is blatantly my opinion). No CEO about a company this large knows about all the functions or sectors, or is an expert in all of them. That's why there's SVP's, advisors, a board, and other support systems.

Tech companies need and deserve product/tech CEO's that will stay with the times and push for innovation. Operations people make good CEO's for operations companies.

NIce armchair gloss-over. On both Craig Federighi and Tim Cook. Who was picked by Jobs to be the next CEO. Your characterization of him barely knowing about products was quite funny; though you apparently think you know him well. And believing he doesn't push for innovation is quite laughable and dismissive.

Is he just like Steve Jobs? Of course not. Neither is anyone else at Apple. Cook is doing an outstanding job, based on any metric. Bottom line is under his leadership, he continues to deliver products people want and are willing to open their wallets for, and at a premium price. Year after year, since replacing Jobs.

“Question from Zahn: Could we at least make the 3D Touch app switch gesture an option in iOS 11 so that I could retain the ability to switch apps that way instead of having to double tap the home button?

Response from Federighi: Hi Adam, What’s with this “we” sh|t…”

Well let’s start with the 3 touch lagg/drooped frames.
Or we can go with animation stutter/lagg littered throughout the OS.
Or my notification text misaligned with the actual bubble..
Or how rearranging icons is painfully slow, the icon moves like its being dragged through molasses.
And that's why you wait until x.1 if you're smart. I learned my lesson with iOS 7.

What this really highlights is just how complex Apple’s software really is and how mindless most of the jabs at Apple are. Looking through these posts, most people are putting quotes around constraint and acting like Apple lied and is changing course.

Apple admits they bring back features due to user demand from time to time, there is absolutely no reason to assume that Craig is lying. 3D Touch is still unique to Apple devices, and it’s obviously more of a software feature than a hardware one.

Every single person who makes snide remarks about this is just outting the fact that they are the ones living in a “reality distortion field”.

Oh, and for those asking why iOS 11 was released without this feature, are you actually saying the OS as a whole should be delayed for this one use case? How selfish can you be?

Look, there’s gonna be an iOS 11.1 and eventually an iOS 12. Guess what, there’s going to be new features in each of those OSes. Should companies never release software until they plan on no longer supporting it so users can know they have the most “fully baked” version of the software that’ll ever exist?

Hear! Hear!

How did people manage to live without that for years and years prior to 3D Touch, and even today with still many devices out there that don't have 3D Touch.

how did people live for years before electricity was discovered? By not knowing or experiencing electricity. Take electricity away now and see what happens. Ignorance is bliss.

Ah, yes, the non-equivalent analogies.

Probably the most laughable and dismissive thing about all this is that you think Cook is doing an outstanding job “on any metric.”

You clearly are blindsided by your views, and unwilling to look further. Riding on the coattails of their successor does not qualify as good leadership in my books. This conversation is over for me; good day.

Add me to the list of people that appreciate this news. Since this feature was put out there, I never heard anyone say or saw any posts saying they hated it and Apple should get rid of it. Then when it went away it "seemed" as though many people were upset and wanted it back. Not until today, when they announce it is coming back, have I read people saying they hate it. I cant imagine there being a way to toggle it off, unless you toggle off 3d touch for everything. I just found it a lot easier to get to app switcher using that, then double tapping home button. Not sure what Iphone X would do without home button?

very glad to hear this is coming back. I really hate using the home button (like an animal) to switch apps and the lack of Force Touch app-switching almost stopped me upgrading to iOS11.

None of those issues affecting my 6S+ running iOS11. Love the OS animations - actually the OS all-round feels snappier™ than before.

Wow - we were loud enough

I sent them feedback about that and apparently many other people did the same.
But when the beta was out people started complaining about it immediately, they should have put it back before the official release.
I don't understand what technical reason would prevent it from working

Message to Craig:
No iOS-appstore on the Mac equals no more buying iOS-apps or even browsing for apps for me. Sorry developers, but I need to thank Apple for the removal of the app-store from iTunes in such a sneaky way, (without warning or explanation) with no alternative (I Don't want to have download the same app several times!!!). Because now I won't be spending money on apps any more. Browsing the iOS App Store on an iOS-device is just a pain I let pass bye.
Other companies have been called 'Evil' for a move like this. Welcome to the club, Apple?

Maybe this might be a 'eureka moment' for you, but not to many others. Repeat after me, 'Software is never really done, it's only shipped'.
You should now be ready to be back to the ground after spending so much time on that mighty high horse of yours.

Back to the main topic, I would so much like the 3D Touch app switcher back.

Thank God. I hate gimmicks like 3D Touch. Literally useless. Things we manipulate with touch don’t need pressure sensitivity. And 3D Touch actions do not aid in productivity. Just like right click is useless. And pushing harder for thicker lines in drawing or increased playback speeds is not natural.

Samsung phones lack pressure sensitivity and their phones are modern works of Art.

I love 3D Touch vs just Touch Alone.
- I can do 1 simple action for 3 things (selection being the initial first)
- I can do things 1 step faster due to this.
- You're NOT thinking about how 3D touch can enhance or benefit those with motor control accuracy in the X/Y plane axis (e.g. swiping right/left-to-left/right)!!

Try thinking beyond just your needs for software delivered to millions.

I wouldn’t say blaming a “technical constraint” is owning up to a mistake.

Oh really? It seems every time he speaks, Apple's stock dips 3% like yesterday! :D

Craig being new? NEW?! He's been there in the very beginning starting at NeXT, then Apple, went to Ariba as Chief Technology Officer in 1999 and returned to Apple in 2009. He's been there longer than Cook and Williams combined ( they both joined Apple in 1998 at the same time after working at IBM together, and went to the same college ). He graduated at University of Cali, Berkeley which shows he's the 'embodiment' of Apple's spirit.

Jeff Williams after Cook would make a bad CEO. There's something about him I don't trust. Craig, at least, is more down to earth and a bit honest.

You just contradicted yourself.

1999 start for Fredirigi
1998 start for Cook

who worked at Apple longer than who? ;)

Absolutely not. Leave day-to-day matters to Tim so Craig can work with the software engineering teams.

To be honest I feel Craig PAILS in comparison to the work that Bertrand had done! OSX to macOS (X) has shown lack of powerful implementations; where the biggest introduction is how Apple got the name. Those peeons grinning and smiling in 2nd/3rd row for EVERY WWDC or Apple Presentation is so annoying.

Lack of Q&A - is diminishing on point feedback where these executives are FORCED to think and not simply rehash rehersed dialog. I hat to bring his name into it but only for reflection - Jobs LOATHED the Q&A BUT he did it and did it VERY well EVEN when he was wrong!

Craig worked for Next under Jobs, then Apple and then went to the other company for several years. He returned in 1999, not 2009 ( that's a typo ). In essence, he's been around longer than Cook.

Wow! You count those as SEVERE bugs?!?

You have a career waiting for you in Software Testing!

Hint: Better never test ANY Android phone...

An essential feature gone for up to a year. Cool! Way to ship regressive software.

...of course it will return. Just like audiobooks with chapters in iOS 7, certain things just needs to disappear from time to time. It was reliable wifi in yosemite and USB in el cap (or was that in 10.10, too?). Your missed feature will be back in the next major iOS revision along with new bugs. Just keep updating, that's the thing.

I hope it comes back soon. I am going crazy without being able to toggle my apps with the hard touch!! I am using the assistive touch workaround for now, but it is annoying.

Why not use the home button?
