Yeah, but if you wipe your HP screen with a cloth or your finger it won't develop defects and ulcers like MBP screens do. It doesn't kill people to wipe surfaces occasionally - but it kills Macbooks! If you actually make a balanced comparison you will notice how the competition has moved on and proven Steve Jobs wrong on some points, as visionary as he was.

You're bringing in a defect on a product line to argue a case for touch screen laptops? Lol ok.

Ok let's make a balanced comparison.

Q1 2016
Surface Sales: 1.1m
MBP Sales: 2.53m

Touch input on the screen would probably create more problems than it would solve. We already see some of these issues on other laptops.
The touch bar is more complexity in my opinion than direct input.

I'd like to see MacOS move closer to iOS in terms of user friendliness. Not dumbing MacOS down, but increasing t's usefulness. Minimising superfluous dialogues with tiny buttons. Apps with tiny palettes. There's a lot that could be done to improve the system as a whole. Touch bar isn't it. It's certainly wasn't a "Hello again" moment for Apple.

Good for him.

How much potential does it have for the customers who don't want to buy it?

The thing is a nightmare, why would I want to slow myself down by having to look at it to use it?

Setup a time trial with anyone on the touch bar vs tactile keys and I will smoke them every time.

Sorry Apple, you dun goofed on this one.

It looks cool though, maybe Apple should have put it ABOVE the function keys.

Hmm..the people at this event who actually got to try the touch bar came away quite impressed. if ya'll hate everythig Apple does you're free to go somewhere else. No one is putting a gun to your head forcing you to buy Apple products. Put your money where your mouth is.

For all intents and purposes, Mac is dead. This ****** keyboard OLED screen doesn't change a thing.

Mac mini = dead
Mac Pro = dead
Mac Air = dead
non-retina MBP = dead

What they did here is give us an overpriced laptop with ****** connectivity (not even an Ethernet port without a dongle!), ****** GPU, last-year's CPU, total-**** keyboard that will hurt your fingers after an hour, soldered RAM, soldered SSD... and the list goes on. But you can buy crap with your finger so all is ok!

Apple has put Mac and macOS into retirement home. Now it's gonna be a slow death (similar to the death of iPod... still for sale but all old models and no future).

You know that they've f-ed up when Microsoft, a day before, outshines them completely. Apple's 1.5hr keynote was the most boring thing ever.

Tim Cook is the guy to blame for this disaster. PLEASE write to Apple's board to fire him. He's destroying Apple. Everything's falling apart... as last quarter's report shows.
Good point. What on earth has happened to Mac Mini and Mac Pro????? iMac?????

DJ's will never, ever, mix a live set on that little strip called Touchbar. A crossfader for example has to be ultra light, smooth and fast. There's very good hardware for that. No DJ will use multi touch on the touchbar. It's a demo gimmic if you ask me.

It's interface madness to devide (and hide) functionality over two separate screens. I just don't get it, sorry.

That DJ demo was the dumbest part of the whole presentation. FFS.

The sales of surface is actually on a upward trend. Sales of apple computers is downwards. Apple are outperforming the majority of their competitors in this respect!

Interesting video; the guy in the video mentions HP Pavilion dv7 and Hairforce One says "Sorry about" [that he used that laptop], and then the interviewer mentions the webcam on the HP laptop, which I'm almost wiling to bet is better than the 480p that is on the 12" Macbooks (!)

I was expecting Hairforce one to extend his apology to everyone that bought a MacBook and expected the webcam to be at least 720p.

Jesus H. Corbett, Apple! What the xxxx are you thinking!?!?!

I'll just post this again - even though it was removed by the Macrumors staff

they lost the plot....I will be a bit rough but that's the truth.......look at them on the stage...they are trying to project an image of the future but..... as employees, they present brand new stunning technology dressed like factory workers in an uniform (I believe they discuss in board meetings what should they wear - like a sect)...it's like the 80's Apple II: shirts - banal, jeans - banal, shoes - conservative....and the maximum is this: they promote health, fitness: apple watch, apps etc etc....but you look at them and what bellies they have....like an anaconda that ingested a pork and is waiting for digestion to do its job....come on...it's 2016!!!!....Jony Ive wears a plastic T-shirt with flaring pants and some shoes that look like they are counterfeits bought in a Chinese second hand market (design - not a joke)....guys....the image of the company is the image of yourselves too...the way you make decisions on yourself is going to be reflected on your products and the way you think....promote health and look HEALTHY....or, after the MagSafe abandon, you will come in 3 years time with a new MagSafe, magnetic ports and present it as INNOVATION....I believe it's time for a change.....

Perhaps Apple sees the MacBook Pro as a desktop replacement, for some it may be. The Microsoft Surface Studio is a reinvention of the desktop computer and it seems so much more impressive than anything Apple has had for years, even watch bands.

I see the task bar as more of an accoutrement and it reminds me of this.

Both Apples and Microsofts presentations were very tedious. It seem Microsoft was trying to be Apple and Apple just kept blathering about how great it was in the past. Its really hard for me to use Windows in my business but Apple is making it ever easier.

.... Additionally (edited) the reason why I rarely use the function keys is because they are just out of finger reach. The touch bar is still just out of finger reach. If all the keys were re-mappable such as transparent keys with OLED at the base, then I'd be raving and praising as Apple coming up with something useful.

I thought about this too. Apple can probably cram more icons on a bar than the number of keys in the same space, but I still prefer physical keys.

A mess. Devices that don't interconnect. Dissed function keys but new Macs with function keys.

I was in the market for two 15" MBPs.

Right now, I can't see a Mac that is of interest to me. The prices outstrip the technology and value.

Not disappointed. Sanguine enough to accept that I probably need to look elsewhere for my computing needs.

A lot of friends and family followed me in buying Apple devices. I expect most will follow whatever advice I give next.

Strange times. But exciting to be heading into a new challenge. Probably.

I'm in the same boat. Knowing what was likely to be announced, I had my mom ready to purchase the latest 13" MBP from the Refurb Store online the day before the event. So glad she got one, because I can't recommend any of these at the current price point.

The touch bar looks like it is in such an awkward place. I'll be looking to see if any of the previous models are available. I am sure they would run Sierra fine. The laptop is not an iPad.

Jsameds, I don't even see that as a balanced comparison. Your comparison is a tablet to a actual laptop. What planet of crap are you living on, oh yeah...it's called Apple fanboy planet, where Apple is your Goddess... lol

... yet i cannot find the usefulness in it yet. will the extra $ pay for extra potential?
Unless they make super mario running on it guess not :)

Gimmick AT BEST. A little too late. Um...Fujitsu laptops had fingerprint unlock technology before 2010 and many Windows laptops already have 4K screens with multi-touch gestures. As always, enjoy your overpriced MacBook Pros. I wish I could put MacOS on a Dell XPS laptop. Much better design.

It seems very un-Apple-like that we didn't see a keyboard for iMac/Mac Pro/Mini (and docked MacBook Pros) with this feature at the same event.

Wonder if it's too little too late.
I haven't seen this much negative feedback on a Mac portable since the original MacBook Air.

And yet the Air became one of the more popular models. Now many are getting upset that it seems it's being discontinued. People complained when serial ports were phased out and USB took over on the Yosemite PowerMacs (B&W).

Look, Macs just work. Simple. I don't know what people are expecting from a laptop. I don't think everything needs to go to touchscreen. That said I'm more partial to desktops and even though I am a die hard Mac user, I have to use Windoze at work. I think I've used the touchscreen a couple of times on my computer at work during the day and about 99% of the time I'm using a mouse and keyboard. At home I use a trackpad on my Mac Pro. It lets me do touch commands without having to go to the screen.

Does anybody use pro apps with their laptop open on their lap?

Apart from watching Youtube in bed, 99% of the time I have my laptop in clamshell mode connected to a monitor, keyboard and mouse (and TB dock, external drives etc). I carry it between home and work, but when I'm working I have it closed.

So while I think the touch bar is cool and potentially nice UI... I will never see it!

Even the people who leave it open as a second display... it's on a stand and awkwardly off to one side, usually with a separate keyboard. So it's not going to be very useful.

I really hope the touch bar apis will allow you someone to build an external keyboard with a touch bar.

Seems like a cool gimmick but they forgot to look at how pros actually use their laptops (i.e. mostly as desktop replacement)
