You are where I was a couple years ago it sounds like.

I finally un-subbed to John all over and moved on...realizing it's really just long winded Apple PR all the time.
He's nothing more than a pr mouthpiece for Apple. Him, Rene Richie & Jim Dalrymple have never shown any criticism or serious critique of Apple.

If you'll forgive the analogy, they're nothing more than apple-polishing yes-men.

Interesting you mentioned Dalrymple -- I've noticed that since he's retired, he's actually had a few things to say on Twitter that one might characterize as finally "objective" if not possibly even "slightly critical"

Frankly that is an archaic way of thinking. There is no reason why games need to melt PC's today in order to be good. That's a bad, bad culture that needs a reboot.
I agree, everything is getting more efficient and consumes less power. You wouldn’t want to still carry around an old brick cell phone if a small flat iPhone works just as well. I’m sure the improvements will be massive these next few years, gaming would catch on with the SOC design.

He does a reasonable job, but yes he is a bit ponderous and slow an interviewer and doesn't keep things ticking along at pace. Gruber is in his element, so he becomes a bit too conversational because he is relaxed talking about his favourite topic, but interviewers should not be having a better time than the audience and should be sweating it to set the pace and use the time wisely. We learnt some things from Craig, and his perspective is always interesting, but it should be like 80% Craig, 20% Gruber, whereas it was dangerously close to 80% Gruber. Good effort though and could be far better with only a few tweaks.

I prefer interviews that are more ‘on the whim’ impromptu then they are scripted . This was a scripted interview in all likeliness, [meaning that Craig knew the questions ahead of time of what he would be answering] and you can tell by his responses that appear more rehearsed.

That said, I don’t have a problem with Gruber, but I do agree that he is a ‘better’ author, than he is an ‘interviewer’.

I’ve never watched this guy before. Wow. It’s the worst interview I’ve ever seen. He lacks any presenting ability; no focus, he stares at the camera and can’t even get his questions out.

This is the only good thing Gruber does. His site has become a dumping ground for his political diatribes. Guy is a total ******. It was fun to watch him freak out in real time on his blog with the iPhone X came out and the little YouTubers got review units before him.

I would of asked why they didn't change the Home Screen and why can't they remove the home bar
Will he ask questions regarding Apple's union busting? 🎊
🙈🙊🙉
He could if asked about final cut in the iPad and calculator on iPadOS he didn’t say anything
As expected, Gruber asks no hard hitting important questions like-
unionisation at Apple stores, iOS App Store commissions, Right to Repair, third-party app stores, Epic Games Fortnite debacle, the all-time low developer relations, the App Store reviewers rejecting bug fix updates, Cloud gaming, the Flexgate on the MacBook Pro/Air, EU Usb-C mandate, iCloud in China... and many more important topics.

It's obvious this interview is scripted and pre-approved by Apple's PR team. Gruber isn't sharp or aggressive in these interview; he never grills them for answers. What a waste of time.
Really people?
Use your brains.
He was a media person who was invited by Apple to an event and given the opportunity to have an interview with two of their top-level executives.
The *last* thing he would want to do in this situation is purposely make the people he was *allowed* to talk to look bad.
That's a good way to never be invited again, get blacklisted from all future Apple press related events or briefings, never get access to another top level Apple employee again, and have their legal team right on your back.
To say that if *you* were in his situation, you would grill them about their legal trouble and customer issues over the year is nothing but pure ignorance.
You would be kicked out of the event so fast, with all of your WWDC related video/written content most likely confiscated, and you certainly would never ever be able to release it.
Let's be realistic here, the interview wasn't the best, but there were a couple interesting tidbits.
If you were expecting anything more, you clearly don't know Apple.

I like Gruber. I'm the only one so it's crazy how he's been able to support himself all this time just doing his blog and podcast.

Also, this isn't an interview. It's an episode of his podcast, so if you don't like those you're not going to like this. It's meant to be a friendly conversation. If you've heard any, that's what you get - relaxed and basically having a good time chatting tech. Which means some wasted time.

So no, he's not going to put Craig or Joz on the spot. It's not journalism. And there's NO WAY these two Apple execs would agree to sit there and be grilled for 90 minutes about any and everything. Instead we get this. I enjoy it a lot for what it is.

he always did that before retirement. You just didn't notice it.

Oh - then why were you including him on your list of Apple "PR mouthpieces"?

Gruber or Rene (your other examples) are never that outspoken vs Apple - particularly the tone and swearing

Every time I'm invited to a Christian wedding I'm asking the priest if Judas Iscariot could have gotten more than 30 pieces of silver if he was a member of a union.

Because that's the right venue to ask such questions.

So, here in 2022, with an almost infinite amount of journalism and coverage of Apple, most of you trash-talk a guy who’s simply happy for tech? It’s a weird reaction, there’s plenty of critical journalism about Apple you can dive into instead.

Gruber calls himself a raconteur - someone who tells anecdotes. He was even presented as such in this show! He’s doing exactly what he’s been doing for years. You don’t like that? That’s fine, watch and listen to someone or something else. I watch and listen to Gruber because I find him entertaining.

And also, he often gets it right, when he denounces some of the more fantastic story in the tech world. Maybe that’s because he’s not depending on some crazy story to generate traffic on his web page.
