My friend has the Mac Studio M1 Max and he never hears anything from it. However, he isn't driving it hard either.

It seems the noise issue isn't consistent. If I were in your shoes, I'd give the Mac Studio a shot and just return it if it's a problem.
Good/reassuring to hear that. However, some users report that the noise/whine issue doesn’t occur until after a few months of use - so, that makes a return less straight forward, I believe…

You record and produce in the same room? From this point you lost all your credibility.

Get a Dell.
Say what? So, the studio size defines whether my work is credible… I’m no big name artist/producer and need to get by with whatever means I have. Just like anyone else. For music production I have used Logic Pro for more than a decade, so why on earth would I switch to Windows?

A M1 Mac mini should be able to handle tracking vocals just fine, unless you are throwing a ton of effects / plug-ins at it at the same time...?

But why not track with the minimum (say maybe a noise gate, some compression & eq) and add effects later...?

I think you’d be more than fine with the Studio or a MacBook Pro. They may not be 100% the computer of your dreams, but when have Apple computers ever been a complete perfect fit for someone’s needs.

Yes, the Mac Mini is an absolute beast for audio production! It crushes almost anything I throw at it - including plugins on 40-70 tracks. The problem is video production AND switching between my audio and video software. I often times make the music in parallels with the video production. So, having a machine with plenty of RAM/fast SSD for swapping + a fast video card would fit my needs perfectly. As I guess is also true for many others here 😊

Well, not getting 16GB of RAM for your M1 Mac mini is on you...! ;^p

An M2 (or, even better, M2 Pro) Mac mini, with maximum RAM might be something to look for...?

Can’t you just put the machine across the room or mount it under your desk or something? From everything I’ve seen, even a thin barrier or short distance is enough to make it completely inaudible.
Could be an option. I think it might be worth it to wait a few months and revisit the situation and product line-up again by then. Maybe they’ll even release a Mac Mini with an M2/M1 Pro or Max chip… one can hope 😊

How is the noise issue easily dealt with? The people having the issue don’t seem to think that, as far as I can tell from their reports…
Put it further away, above you on a shelf, below the desk, mount it there maybe, put it into a cabinet, use some acoustic foam around it, etc.

I mean, it’s not like noisy computers are new. We’ve had them for decades and yet managed to live with them. Have the people who have the issue actually tried to solve it other than complaining about it? What have they tried and have they reported about it?

Fair enough, if you can hold out then that’s probably the best option. There are rumors of a powered up M2 Mini on the horizon, so that might be just what you need.

What computer did you use before the m1? I can think of no mac better suited before this.
I used an old 2010 Mac Pro, almost maxed out with 12 core 3 ghz cpu and so on. But moving from 2K to 4K editing forced me to try out an M1 Mac Mini (since I couldn’t afford the 2019 Mac Pro). And besides, the 2010 Mac Pro is one power hungry and relatively noisy piece of gear when firing up all cores + GPU, so moving to the Apple Silicon universe made sense on multiple levels.

No. I own a Mac Mini M1, and it just doesn’t cut it. A relevant (faster than M1 Max) Mac Pro is out of my league price wise. That leaves me with the Mac Studio option - and it seems it could be faulty.
Can I ask what issues you’re currently running into with the mini?

As others have mentioned, the Mac Studio noise problem seems to be mostly confined to the Max, not the Ultra. Plus, not everyone is experiencing it.

Given Apple's no hassle return policy, I suggest getting a Mac Studio and putting it through its paces to see if the noise is a problem for you. If it is, return it and wait for something else.

Well said. Nothing beats making your own experience and just trying it out.

I know it sounds crazy, but there’s currently no desktop Mac that meets my need as an audio/video producer.

Mac Mini (M1): Not powerful enough
Mac Studio (M1 Max/Ultra): Noise issues as per reported by multiple users
Mac Pro (Intel): Too old and too expensive

One option is to go with a Macbook Pro, but I don’t need/want to pay for the screen when I already have a 30” pro monitor on my desk.

So, the waiting game is on..

Not only is the above not true, it's an absurd reason for someone who claims to be in AV production to not get a Studio.

My 16" M1-Pro MBP does tap-to-click just fine. No speaker popping noise on mine either.
That is good to hear. The tap-to-click problem is where you tap-to-click multiple selections using shift or command key click and nothing happens until about the third attempt. So you don't have that issue? I have experienced that first-hand on both the 14 and 16 inch models at the Apple store and there is a long thread on this forum about it. The speaker popping I know less about but there is another thread on this forum about it.

Noise issues on the Studio? A friend has mine and it is incredibly silent.

The noise thing is incredibly rare or overinflated and if you are having that issue, then get an app to control the fan speed. Any Apple Silicon Mac you get is going to be incredibly quiet for your workloads.

Tap to click several non-sequential files, both with Shift and CMD, works fine.
