Astounding

I find it astounding that people are complaining about this being an "issue." A problem with a new Mac to me is a dead pixel, not if the keys are slightly raised by 0.05mm on one side.

This is pitiful.
People who return a piece of technology for such an utterly trivial reason should be considered too immature of mind to buy expensive consumer products.
I suggest parents buy the machines and hold them until the return period is over, before entrusting them to such offspring.

Just a note to add that you can easily fix these keys - just lift them in the opposite end and they will rectify themselves. Don't worry if they pop out - they pop back in easy :)

You know, people who buy benz's have different expectations than people who buy yugo's. Do we have high expectations? Yeah, but we pay premium money, and expect a similar product.

Don't knock the perfectionists. I betcha Steve Jobs doesn't live with crooked keys, and neither should we.

We're the people who hopefully keep Apple from getting fat, lazy and complacent despite their record profits and profit margins.

You're not the one buying that laptop, and you're not the one using it.

Meh...if the keys work, who cares? If nothing else is wrong with the computer, hold on to it for dear life!

Considering Apple charges a $1000 premium for these computers, you'd better have everything perfect.

i have the same problem. F4 and F6 keys are really crooked. did anybody bother to get their MBP's exchanged?

better yet -- did anyone figure out a way to reset/realign these keys? can u pop them out?

I have an early 2008 MBP and my caps lock and left shift key are raised towards their left side. They're so high that sometimes they make marks on my screen when I close my display... I'll probably bring it in sometime, I've had it since late June but haven't really made an effort to get it fixed.

I popped mine off today and tried to reset them correctly to no avail. The scissor mechanism is plastic as you could imagine and very flexible, but resilient to hold its shape. If you wish to take them off and try yourself, I suggest (BUT NOT INSURE) the following method:

*Try At Your Own Risk*

1) Get a spudger or your fingernail under the LEFT side of the key
2) Apply a "soda can" opening technique until the key clicks off of the LEFT side.
3) Tilt the key toward the right side until you can wiggle it free.

To replace keys:
1) Insert right side of key into the opening
2) Slide the key from Left to Right as far as possible
3) Click down the Left side of your key

Presto Chango you have removed a key and put it back on! lol

I created a thread about this a few days ago but it got no replies, but anyway, I popped the key off of one key that is crooked, the f5 key, and one that is not, the esc key, and I put the esc key in the position that the f5 key was in, and it was not crooked anymore. I did the same for other keys to, so I starting to think that maybe its the keys that are bad and not the way the macbook pro was made. If any of you who have crooked keys could try this and see if it works, we might be able to fix this problem for good just by getting replacement keys.

Really? I bought my wife's XPS 1530 with the exact same specs as my Pro for $995.

so the 949 base model 1530 on dell right now that's ddr2-667, 8400m gs, 1280x800 ccfl backlit, and 802.11g and vista home premium (not even x64), with a tiny trackpad and no multitouch is equal to an aluminum unibody, 1440x900 led backlit display, 9400m+9600m gt, 802.11n, with ddr3-1066, a huge multitouch trackpad, and os x?

but somehow the extra 46 you paid gave you all those upgrades above the base model, wow.

Hi,

I'm the original poster of this thread and I would like to point out to the 8 or 9 people who responded saying "this is ridiculous" or "you're being too picky" that you people are all idiots. I stated very clearly that my keys are mildly crooked and in my follow-up post I pointed out that it wasn't much of an issue to me. I wanted to see what really crooked keys looked like, if you people had bothered to read the original post instead of simply looking at the pictures you might have understood this. The people who are returning their MBP's because of crooked keys have much more crooked keys - I'm assuming.

Anyway people, if you're gonna participate in a thread, try to READ ;)

I actually thought about doing a switch-a-roo, however, the first thing I did after popping my F6 key out was placing it on a flat surface to see if it was the key that was warped in shape... it wasn't, for it laid perfectly flat on the flat surface.

In my opinion, I think this defect is due to the plastic pieces that hold the keys in place OR the white rubber piece that props the key up.

Either way, I wish these new MBP keyboards were made by the same guys that put together the Apple mini bluetooth keyboards... I compared those F keys with the F keys on my MBP, and I have to say, those keys are aligned with razor precision.

I dunno what happened when they tried to adopt the same design in this edition of the MB(P)..

Then I guess you can consider me immature. I bought my week 45 MBP a week and a half ago, and the majority of the keys were raised on one side. The backslash key actually got jammed under the aluminum, and I took it back. The next week 45 had the same problem with the F keys, a rattling battery door, and seemed to be slightly warped (like a bad barstool). I returned that one this morning for a week 46 MBP, and all of the problems seem to have been fixed. They keys are as precise as my wireless keyboard, and the battery door is nice and snug.

If I am spending $2500 for a computer, everything better be perfect.

Greetings,

I bought my first Al-MB less than a week ago and I was a little disappointed to find my entire F-key row out of line, They are all slanted to the left. I am glad to find out that I am not the only one suffering from this issue. I plan to take it back before my 14 days is up and I was wondering what people have said that made Apple fix this issue.

Obviously the computer is a toy/status symbol to some people and not a tool to work on. C'mon man, seriously does the slight .mm slant of those keys impede your work at all in any way whatsoever? So you would return a computer free of video problems, no dead pixels, loose battery cover and no fan buzzing or any other defects that have been mentioned on these forums? Totally unbelievable.

My MBP is a tool I work on and if it had those issues I would return it. Why should I deal with it? It's Apple's problem. They can sell it as a refurb. If I have to return seven MBPs until I get a perfect one, they have seven more refurbs to sell. Their bottom line is not my responsibility. I wouldn't take a car with crooked trim from my BMW dealer, why should that be acceptable from Apple?
