My MBP is a tool I work on and if it had those issues I would return it. Why should I deal with it? It's Apple's problem. They can sell it as a refurb. If I have to return seven MBPs until I get a perfect one, they have seven more refurbs to sell. Their bottom line is not my responsibility. I wouldn't take a car with crooked trim from my BMW dealer, why should that be acceptable from Apple?

If a car's trim was out as little as these F keys I hardly think it would be noticieable. Returning a computer over a few F keys being out .mm's is absurd. Its not the same thing as a car door being misaligned.

Think of the ratios, not absolute values. The keys are tiny, but by how much are the keys misaligned in proportion to their height? If the car's trim was misaligned by the same relative amount it would be definitely noticeable. Your door would be off by almost 10%.

Silliest thread I've ever seen. I'd like to see pictures of these "problem" machines. Every picture I've seen posted, the difference is so small I can't even see it.

If the difference is a fraction of a mm (you know how small that is right) then it's just ridiculous. That's less than 1% of the key, not 10%.

Holy Hell.
Holy Hell.

First of all there were only 2 posters who submitted photos, myself and one other person. I think I was pretty clear in all of my posts that this is not a PROBLEM but a slight imbalance. I returned that MBP because the speakers were broken and there were dents on the body. Really, as I think I pointed out earlier, I wanted to see what "crooked" keys looked like. I was hoping people with "crooked" keys would post their photos so we could see what this defect looked like in comparison to the slight crookedness seen in our satisfactory machines. The thread became a debacle of very opinionated posters who failed to READ anything. I know looking at pictures is easier than reading, but reading posts could be helpful too. I agree this has become a pretty silly thread, since only one person with crooked keys even posted the thread is basically just a bunch of people arguing about nothing. Crooked keys are nothing compared to all of the other defects these MBPs have been shipping out with.

Also, bcaslis, I would like to see pictures of these "problem" machines, but only one person posted a photo and it was more along the lines of "mild crookedness" and I don't think he returned it because of it.

Has anyone actually returned their machine and received a new one for crooked keys? (My F Keys are slightly crooked, didnt notice until I checked this thread, haha)

I did. Mine was VERY crooked. The manager took one look and said "Wow, even I'd be upset with that." If it's minor, they may not do anything but if it's pretty bad like mine, they probably would.

Example of crooked keys on my MacBook (non-pro), purchased mid-Feb, 2009.

The first MacBook had a few defects: very loud HDD, an optical drive that the neighbours could feel, and a dead pixel... But it had straight keys. I swapped it for a new one, and noticed the crooked keys as soon as I got home and opened it up (see pics). I decided to hang onto this one with only 'cosmetic' imperfections... (I plan on replacing the crooked keys or keyboard when I'm less busy ;)).

Not to dig up an old thread but I noticed this on my MBP the other day so I thought I'd share an anecdote.

When I noticed the key (F2, Brightness Up) looked a little off, I pulled the offending key off and inspected to see if anything was underneath--there wasn't. I plopped it back on and there was no problem but it still looked a little crooked.

I decided to pull off an otherwise-normal function key and see if there was any difference....there was.

The "scoops" on on the left-hand side of the offending key were a little taller than those on the other, more even key ("eject" if you're curious).

I swapped keys temporarily and could see that the crooked behavior carried over. I then took a good hard look at my keys with backlight brightness all the way up. Conclusion? they're all a little crooked in some manner so I put the keys back to the way they were before full-blown OCD set in. :p

Anyway, I thought it would give someone peace of mind that it isn't an underlying problem with the machine itself but rather some of the keys' "scoops" might be more shallow than others.

Happy computing! :apple:
