The popular endless hopper Crossy Road from Hipster Whale is coming soon to Apple Arcade. A release date has not been announced at this time, but users can sign up to be notified when the game becomes available through the App Store.

Similar to Frogger, Crossy Road tasks players with crossing a road bustling with traffic and obstacles, and there are many adorable characters to choose from, ranging from a chicken to a penguin. As with all games available through the service, the Apple Arcade version of Crossy Road will not have any ads or in-app purchases available.

Crossy Road was among the first games announced for the fourth-generation Apple TV alongside the introduction of the tvOS App Store back in September 2015. However, it appears the Apple Arcade edition of the game will be limited to the iPhone and iPad.

A variation of the game titled Crossy Road Castle, an endless runner/platformer combo, launched on Apple Arcade in February 2020.

Three additional games are set to launch on Apple Arcade this Friday, including Zen Pinball Party, MasterChef: Let's Cook, and Layton's Mystery Journey.

Priced at $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year, Apple Arcade provides access to a catalog of over 200 games without ads or in-app purchases across the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV, with additional titles added periodically.

Wait… The game was originally for tvOS but this is only iPhone/iPad? I thought all Apple Arcade games were supposed to work on Mac and tvOS as well?

Crossy Road was among the first games announced for the fourth-generation Apple TV alongside the introduction of the tvOS App Store back in September 2015.
I remember prior to the ATV4 and tvOS being announced, there were rumors of a "console killer" Apple TV being tested, with graphic capabilities better than Xbox 360.

When the ATV4 was launched, I was very sadden that the game Apple used to display the gaming abilities of their new device was Crossy Road. Yeah, it might be fun, but it would have been nice to have something more.

Between that, the underpowered (for gaming) A8, Siri Remote requirement, and tiny 200MB static app size limit, Apple killed any gaming momentum tvOS.

While Apple walked back on those silly decisions later, the damage was done.

Now, developers don't seem to give a crap about tvOS, as support for it has been dropping like crazy. Apple doesn't seem to care about it either, so why should the developers.

However, it appears the Apple Arcade edition of the game will be limited to the iPhone and iPad.
Yeah, sounds about right.

All of the “+” games have been just iOS games with the micro transactions removed. I’ll have to check, but I don’t think any of them run on macOS.

Just noticed that the article just says “Crossy Road” but, in the App Store, it has the correct “Crossy Road +” name which would indicate why it’s just iPhone/iPad.

It will on M1 Macs
How does something like this work with native apps? Can you, for example, run a Mac version of Messages next to an iOS version of Messages? I'm still on a (very old) MacBook and have been curious about the Mac-running-mobile-apps thing.
