Not sure why people are crapping on Microsoft here. The issue is crowdstrike. They have Linux and Mac versions of Falcon sensor too. They just happened to screw up the windows version today and push it to production past everyone’s security controls.

This could be Apple or Linux tomorrow.
The fact that so many systems are affected also just shows how many systems that are actually used for stuff like flight control etc. are running Windows and not macOS or Linux. Especially macOS has a much smaller market share compared to Windows anyway and a big chunk of that share will be more in creative and media markets and for personal use.

Any emergency patch that Crowdstrike pushes out will be useless for those machines stuck in a BSOD.

which means… someone needs to either guide a user over the damn phone or physically get their hands on the machine so that it can get the patch.

My Laptop was left on last night and I had to do a hard boot this morning. Fortunately the reboot worked. My Work laptop has Windows 11 so maybe that provided a smoother way to get past this then with Windows 10. There will be lots of support calls today.

Now I just need my work pay to get deposited to my bank account as that didn't come through last night due to banks also having issues related to this outage. I won't bother calling the bank as there is a message mentioned there are delays due to abnormally high call volume. Just have to sit back and wait.

“The cause of the failure has been identified as an update to Crowdstrike Falcon antivirus software installed on Windows 10 PCs.”

How popular is that software? I have never heard of it until today.
It's very popular in the enterprise world. The ironic thing about it is that it is mainly used to tick off some boxes in audits and certifications.

George Kurtz, president and CEO of CrowdStrike, the company at the center of today's enormous IT outages, says the problems could persist for some time yet.

"It could be some time for some systems that just automatically won’t recover," Kurtz told NBC's "TODAY" show this morning.

Kurtz said the company was "deeply sorry for the impact that we've caused to customers, to travelers, to anyone affected by this," adding the issue has been fixed on their end.

"Many of the customers are rebooting the system, and it’s coming up, and it’ll be operational because we fixed it on our end," he said. "We’re just trying to sort out where the negative interaction was," he said of the faulty update that affected Windows PCs.

you dont say?

This isn't a Windows vs. Mac or Linux issue. This is what happens in a tech-culture obsessed with constantly pushing updates and new releases. This is what happens to a society hyper-fixated on buzzwords like AI, Blockchain, the cloud, etc. rather than building stable and resilient systems. We're living in a world where our society can unravel because some cloud based web app/server is down or a bad update is pushed. We need to stop this insanity. Technology is supposed to improve and add to our lives, we're not supposed to put every single thing on a damn AWS server.

This is why I'm frustrated about this obsession with getting rid of cash, physical media and retail businesses. Maybe if the internet is down and you need groceries, you just walk in get what you need, pay cash and walk out. There's some value in things not being connected to each other.

Also why I'm frustrated with everyone wanting to work remotely. You got a crisis on your hand and now you're hoping Zoom isn't also effected, because your thousands of miles away from everyone else. It's so easy to make silly mistakes when you're not surrounded by a team to work through difficult issues.

This has to do with the fact that it was a security-update. For that CrowdStrike needs "god-like" access to all the inner workings of the IT system. A botched update can then lead to what we in Austria/Germany call a Super-GAU or in English a "disaster beyond all expectations".

That is why iOS is so secure. Apple won't allow root access on iOS, so it's impossible to screw up.

Except for maybe the EU version of iOS.

I work in pharmacy at a large midwest hospital and the majority of our computers are down. My laptop survived, I suspect, because I had it shut down overnight. No remote work as our VPN servers are down. WiFi is off, too. We're currently back on paper charts and admissions.

I'm glad I don't work in IT; they are telling us that they physically have to touch every affected computer in the facility. We have a large IT department, but pharmacy is pretty low on the priority list.

IT being a critical technology for all mega corporations, why don't they own their IT, use solutions that they have a good control of? Greed? Greed will always have a cost one day.

We own our IT, but we use Microsoft 360, teams, OneDrive, etc. The only thing my company outsources is food services.

IMO yes & no...

I assume MS works very heavily with Crowdstrike to make sure that OS updates etc do not break their software (for example) Kind of like Jamf works heavily with Apple with every new OS release etc

There was some chatter among some sys admins on X in the wee hours of this AM, that MS should have a way for Windows to have a fallback option when something like this happens given very few (if any) other software have pretty much root level access to the windows OS itself

Microsoft makes little to no money from Windows. They don't have the resources like Apple does with iOS to curate every piece of software so that it works according to Apple their standards.

Yea the heat Microsoft is taking from everything I'm reading is unfair. It appears to be solely how Crowdstrike was configured unless I missed something.
If the end users / corps are customers of Crowdstrike, fine. If the end users / corps are customers of Microsoft and are getting "stuff" from Crowdstrike through their relationship with Microsoft, it`s on Microsoft.

Meanwhile, this would have been a great opportunity to check those beautiful little machines handing out cash through a slot.

If those have failed, it would be the first indication of software updates of those I ever seen or heard of.

This is the way the world ends. This is the way the world ends. This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.
I always thought those Microsoft calendars were a bit odd. Millennial fireworks tonight everyone 👍

These systems should be immutable. Why would a POS terminal need Windows 10 with automatic updates enabled? Why would they do this with airports? It's just ridiculous
Yeah, I am surprised to see all of those corporates, institutions etc rolls out security update without thinking twice. They put far too much faith in Microsoft employee’s hands. Me meanwhile only update my system when I feel like it. All thanks to the group policy. Heck, for those POS machines and similar, they should not even be connected to the internet at all.

My Windows 10 desktop computer is working fine, mostly because the anti-malware system is Windows Defender, not the CrowdStrike Falcon software found on (mostly) enterprise-based installations of Windows 10 and Windows 11. No problems on my iOS devices (though crossing fingers).
