Airlines and banks are affected. 911 call centers are affected. Air traffic control is affected. Hospitals are affected. Much more too. It’s not hyperbole to say people will most likely die in part because of this.
Troubleshooting steps
1. Shut down your PC
2. Get a mac.
DeletedI don't know what people are hawking about. crowdstrike
The cause of the failure has been identified as an update to Crowdstrike Falcon antivirus software.
I think it’s because it’s an Apple forum and you will find many on here regard Mac OS to be superior in every way…Not sure why people are crapping on Microsoft here. The issue is crowdstrike. They have Linux and Mac versions of Falcon sensor too. They just happened to screw up the windows version today and push it to production past everyone’s security controls.
This could be Apple or Linux tomorrow.
Misinformation… because windows was mentioned everyone assumed it was a windows specific update and Microsoft’s fault. It was a third party software that caused this chaos. Was this not a Windows update?

You didn't answer my question.Misinformation… because windows was mentioned everyone assumed it was a windows specific update and Microsoft’s fault. It was a third party software that caused this chaos.
No commercial plane runs any “operating systems“ we use on a daily basis. The flight computer is designed separately from normal computers.Hopefully no plane's onboard computers run Windows
Even if All airports IT systems are down, the alternative airport information won’t change, nor those alternatives magically disappear. Updates issued prior to IT system breakdown can still work, mostly. It’s the main issue of figuring out which passenger is which, whether check-in is allowed or not, if ticket fares are paid or not, among other things. That means rerouting planes around "bricked" airports (but to where if your computers can't get the status of alternate airports?)
Even if it is not an automatic windows update, it is still a software update. VPN all pos machines to a central server and cut off network should VPN is down. I am sure there are ways to isolate those machines from the rest of the internet. It’s more of a matter of whether they want to go that far or not.Because even a POS connects to a central server, and so would need to have critical security updates. Aside from this, you would probably understand that this was not an automatic Windows update that caused this issue if you had simply read the article or even a few of the comments here.
Most people would have recognised that as a jokeYou got to be joking right? Crowdstrike is responsible for this, not Windows.
Exactly. I blame Microsoft first and foremost, then Crowdstrike.I didn’t.
Apparently, it only took them 3 minutesWho would know, that Crowdstrike, a "leading cyber security" company, is responsible for the biggest "cyber incident" of 2024.
You cannot make this **** up.
Back to the 90s...Yesterday my PC at work kept freezing and got the blue screen of death. I wonder if it was related. Probably a coincidence though.
You are quoting me, as I was quoting to an article. Dunno why you are replying to this and in that manner. I never mentioned anything to warrant such a reply from you.Misinformation… because windows was mentioned everyone assumed it was a windows specific update and Microsoft’s fault. It was a third party software that caused this chaos.
Crowdstrike is not part of windows and is not distributed via windows or widows update. It's it's own solution. This update happened via a Windows update though, right?
I guess that’s the default position of a subset of Apple devotees.Exactly. I blame Microsoft first and foremost, then Crowdstrike.
This update happened via a Windows update though, right?
Do you read articles? Or do you have an autopilot "blame Microsoft" because it is cool?If the end users / corps are customers of Crowdstrike, fine. If the end users / corps are customers of Microsoft and are getting "stuff" from Crowdstrike through their relationship with Microsoft, it`s on Microsoft.
I have no idea what you’re on about. Crowdstrike is a government policy to prevent mass civil protest and unrest. I doubt it would be distributed by windows update but the police and military. You are quoting me, as I was quoting to an article. Dunno why you are replying to this and in that manner. I never mentioned anything to warrant such a reply from you.

This. All of you saying "it's not Microsofts fault!" are missing the point entirely. If the end users / corps are customers of Crowdstrike, fine. If the end users / corps are customers of Microsoft and are getting "stuff" from Crowdstrike through their relationship with Microsoft, it`s on Microsoft.
Have you read the article? Have you seen Microsoft didn't push any update? Or you are too in autopilot mode "blame Microsoft"?Yeah, I am surprised to see all of those corporates, institutions etc rolls out security update without thinking twice. They put far too much faith in Microsoft employee’s hands. Me meanwhile only update my system when I feel like it. All thanks to the group policy. Heck, for those POS machines and similar, they should not even be connected to the internet at all.
