To the poster who suggested I get a job. Where did I imply that I didn't have one? I did mention I was saving for one. I was just curious because the pricing I have looked at are all around 2500 for a MBP. If my question offended you, you didn't have to post a reply. Especially not one that was bordering on rude.

Only the high end 17" model costs that much.

13" MBPs start at $1,199 and 15" start at $1,799.

This is a good plan, I will try this. So far my putting aside whatever cash and change I have in my wallet has only netted me 100.

A little bit of envelope budgeting never hurt anybody...:)
I recommend Moneywell to do this once you get your Mac. I am using this right now to finance my MacPro (the updated one that is...whenever that will happen ).

1) pay attention in school
2) select a subject that leads to a good career and pay extra attention to this
3) go to college, get bachelor's degree in said subject
3a) get good enough grades to get graduate fellowship
4) go to good graduate school, get Ph.D.
5) get great job with doctorate in valuable field (e.g., engineering)
6) buy MBP (and house, car, etc.)

:)

My answer is simple: Let Apple Pay for your Macintosh stuff!!!

In detail, buy some AAPL shares, which can generate new macs very quickly! :D

Life is just this simple. I never pay for my macs! ;)

i saved up 3/4 and my parents gave me the 1/4 for finishing the first year on university

I bought my white macbook in 2006 with a scholarship.. but my MBP was a gift from my mom for graduating summa cum laude/getting into graduate school.

Funny to see someone I graduated with on MacRumors. ;) I remember playing that one game with you and Josh, you should figure out who I am quick.

I paid for my mac junk by working too much.
Curious, take macbook pro as an example. will you guys sell old one and buy a new one every year or u guys buy a new version every two years/three years, something like that?
Every refresh. Spend the time to find someone selling right away so you lose the tax and $50-100 off the normal price, also keep your stuff in good condition. I spend ~$50 or end up making money every refresh.

Most people don't figure out what they want to do with the rest of their lives while they are in high school. ****, I wish it was that easy. I figured out what I love and what I am good at are completely different things. Luckily the things I am good at make decent money.... however what I love blows a ton of money. ;)

Working 3 months 45hr weeks in summer overseas with child-labour like pay (about US$400 a month). I used all the pay I got from that job, plus digging a bit into my own savings to get this MBP I have now.

And that, is how I got my MBP.

I do have decent-ish full time job but if it wasn't for inheritance that was passed down to me I probably wouldn't have got a Mac.

Lol, have you ever read Rich Dad Poor Dad?

I don't think points 1-4 are essential in finding a way to earn great money ;)

i sold my body every night of the week, until i saved enough money to buy a MBP. They were the longest 6 years of my life. :D

Macs also have great resale value so it'll help with a future laptop purchase.

This is true. I've sold a blackbook, a late 08 UMB, went PC for a bit and now going back to MBP13 and I haven't had to spend very much out the pocket. Just for say ram upgrades or whatever, but have not loss much value in them at all. I've been trading/reselling for the past two years now and have only increased my margin. Pretty awesome! I'm getting my next MBP through a sell of my M11x which was paid for by the previous laptop I owned and sold.

this is the the MF'ing truth!

Not to say I dont appreciate your thread but im not sure how you really can ask. Of course Job is the answer? or am I missing something.

I have enough to buy a MBP off 1 pay day. So I did.

That will never work.

First, as soon as you're paid, put the 50 (or whatever) into a saving account, then go ahead and live your life for the month.

I may be mistaken, but I think the gist of the question is based on, by reading these forums, the impression that everybody runs out and gets a new MBP every 12-18 months (or whenever a 'major' refresh happens), and the OP is interested in knowing how 'the average person' can afford to do so.

I'm sure the average mac owner keeps their equipment longer but forums are frequently inhabited by early adopters.

I bought a used one on eBay (thus likely financing someone's purchase of the refresh model) and used part of my bonus check to pay for it.

Personally, I like the idea of putting away a fixed amount every pay, with the goal of purchasing a specific item.

Job using a mac??

Do non of you guys make money with macs? that way its a double whammy! im a graphic designer for a newspaper i get a free mac and obviously my earnings pay for the macs i want! :)

I am planning on buying a new one every 5 years. Also I will sell this current one and put that towards the new one

I like to search for deal for things I want/need that are expensive. I picked up a 13" MBP last week, brand new, at Microcenter.com for only $999 + $35 tax. They are having a big sale for pickup only on this model and since my Microcenter is in a war zone the city/state only charges 50% of the normal tax rate to promote shopping in the area (Paterson, NJ).

The thing about getting a good price is that it can be looked at as an investment. Selling something for a little less than you paid for it is always a great deal. I am a photographer and some of my lenses are reburbed and Used so I can use them for 2 years and sell for close to what I paid making these type of purchases very cheap in the long run

Yes, this is the way to do it.

Live within your means. Pay yourself first. Then save for things you want. Then with what is left over, live your life. You'll be surprised how well that works. :)
