As a multiplatformist, I use and like _both_ Win 7 Pro and OS X. My new ThinkPad W510 & 15" MacBook Pro are both top of the line laptops.
.
What I find quite interesting is some peoples need to bash Windows. It must boost their self esteem to be part of the Apple ecosystem.
.
My laptops are just tools I use to do work and personal computing tasks. In no way do they serve as objects to prop up my sense of self confidence. They don't have to "be cool" nor does their performance have any bearing on my happiness.
Like you, I am a "multiplatformist" (nice term, by the way). I run both Windows 7 Ultimate and OS X, although I run them both on my MBP and not on separate laptops. As noted in my last post, I don't understand the Windows bashing that we see so much of because Win 7 is really quite a nice OS, exponentially better that Vista, which I did bashed.

How a computer performs doesn't affect my happiness exactly but a poorly performing one does tend to raise my frustration level, which, I suppose, does affect my quality of life to one degree or another. On a more basic level, I agree that computers are only tools and have little or nothing to do with my sense of self-worth.

HP Envy 15 is a beast, but after reviews, you have to buy a "thin" expanded 9 cell battery tray (or w.e size battery it is) in order to only get like 5 hours battery life, without the battery expansion you get like 2-3 hrs LOL. The design on the lid looks non professional (IMO) and the trackpad from a youtube video review testing out the multi finger gestures failed during the video...such as 2 finger scrolling up/down froze and delayed (i LOL'd) anyways, after seeing how not appealing the hp envy 15 was with all the grid holes all around the rim of the laptop, and the battery tray that makes it a 1.5" thick laptop (i think) and adds more weight for less portability, and to say that it comes with an EXTERNAL superdrive is so DOOFY looking.

The way i see the envy 15 is the closest attempt (obviously) at being the alternate apple MBP.

For those who saw the 1st iron man, i look at the mbp as iron man himself, well designed and fine tuned. while the hp envy 15 is the rebuilt suit that tony stark 1st built when he was held captive in the desert.....big, heavy...holds a lot of power, but overall doesn't top iron man himself!
:apple:

Nobody in these debates ever seems to remember the 5 year battery in the MBP. That to me is a huge part of why I think the MacBook line is superior in general.

I guess I'm one of the few people in this thread that's actually tried to switch from a uMBP to an Envy 15.

I have a fall 2008 umpb. I believe what Apple is doing with the iPad and iPhone app stores and closed computing threatens the future of the computing industry and human civilization (free speech) in general. I do not want to give them any more money.

I bought an Envy 15 with a pair of x18m drives (320GB of flash!) and 4GB of RAM.

Good points:
Ridiculously fast - capable of actually playing modern games.
Good cooling solution - running full-out on 3d games in my lap was not uncomfortable, better than an MBP (mine had an i5-540M processor)
Decent keyboard (though the esc and ctrl keys are in a weird place, and I'm a vi user)
Windows 7 is not bad.
320GB of intel flash storage is spectacular, and the option only added $500 to the cost of the laptop
Night vision camera was pretty nifty, though I never used it.
Did I mention it was capable of playing games? Hellooooo apple?
Some models have USB 3.0 (wtf apple?)

Bad points:
No good screen resolution options: either 1366x768 or 1920x1080 - one is too low res, the other too high (mine had a 1080p screen)
16:9 is inferior to 16:10. I didn't realize how noticeable it would be.
The trackpad SUUUUUUUUUUCKS. I mean it really sucks. It's possible that if I was used to a windows laptop I'd think it was okay, but coming from a unibody macbook pro, it's just horrid. I spent hours trying different versions of synaptic's drivers, never finding something that didn't make me furiously angry.
Ambient light sensor sucked - it just worked worse than Apple's - I ended up turning it off.
Only HDMI out - it's incapable of driving a 30" monitor. This is embarrassing for a $2000 laptop with such a powerful video card.

Anyway, enough rambling on my part.
I gave the Envy 15 3 weeks - I really tried my best. The trackpad was what broke my spirit. The screen's resolution made me unhappy, but I might have lived with it if the trackpad wasn't constantly making me question whether life was worth living.

Fortunately, HP has a great return policy - no restocking fee, no nothing.

I was all set to live with my MBP until something else came along but my wife's macbook finally gave in, and I bought myself an i7 uMBP and gave her the penryn. I now see it like paying Comcast for internet access - I'll do it begrudgingly, as all the other options are so terrible that I'll cough up money to a company I dislike.

It's Apple, not HP.

Apple laptops might get hot to the touch but HP is the only company that has computers that have outright fried... for me anyway.

It runs Macintosh OS X. I actually like Windows but I like Mac OS X better.

It has better battery life.

I like iWork over Microsoft Office.

Nothing to do with being a Apple fangurl or nothing.

The computer could run 4 i7's, 16gb of ram, and dual video cards at the same price as my MBP. I still wouldn't buy it. Reason being that it's still a PC.

And the ENVY is like a chinese knock off of the macbook pro... common. almost everything is exactly the same except for the fact that its running windows. if you got the dre beats limited edition one, you could have the dre beats logo light up too. It's stupid... Macs are over priced and I can admit that. But it doesn't crash and freeze like a pc. Your buying an envy which is still a PC at the same price of a mac.

What does this post contribute to this thread?
The Envy 15 has some significant technological advantages over an MBP. If you're not willing to consider it because "it's still a PC", how does that further the discussion?

Roughly in order of importance and all very subjective:

No viruses on os x
Easier backup via superduper
Sync through mobile me with iPhone and iPad and other mbp
Already invested in software
Generally better shareware/freeware environment
Os x feels more stable and faster
Data (pictures, documents, music) well organized and I'm too lazy to redo everything
Company subsidizes computer so money was available
Mbp Hardware feels solid

OSX and HP's insane bloatware policy. Once you've been spammed by HP you'll NEVER buy another. Been there done that myself.

It contributes because like the title says. "Curious, why did you buy a MBP 15" instead of Envy 15"?"

This is infact my first mac. I've worked at several computer stores as a technician including bestbuy geek squad right now. I just don't know how these customers can live with there pc doing this. The typical story from the customer was "i was just reading news on the website and all of a sudden i get all these viruses" (obviously, they were looking at porn. I could see the history) and how many computers have corrupted windows.

They always say they have like norton anti-virus protection and all that crap. Seriously, that doesn't do anything. Windows is vulnerable to viruses no matter what condom brand you got. And then it always slows down after a while, and the price of the windows os isn't any better.

EDIT: oh ya. the ENVY mostly made of plastic unlike MBP's "one piece cut out"

Similarly, like many others have already stated, my reasons for buying the uMBP were primarily:
OSX/GUI
Build quality
Virus protection
Design Aesthetics
MobileMe integration with iPhone
iLife programs/iTunes (note: iTunes and MobileMe on Windows are not the same as on the Mac in my experience...I have had nightmares with those two programs on my PC's)
Apple Customer Service (I've had nothing but excellent experiences with AppleCare)

I am a longtime Mac user (this is my 6th Mac laptop and I've had 2 Mac desktops) but I also use Windows (5 or 6 PC's but only have my Acer NetBook now which I actually really like for portability and light tasks)...this uMBP Core i5 is BY FAR the finest portable computer I have ever owned...in fact, it is the finest computer (desktops included) I have ever owned...there is however, a 27" iMac in my future that may just change that...:D :apple:

When I do buy an MBP, it'll be because I have been burned by low quality on the PC side. My Apple hardware has been tank-like in comparison.

Might as well save my money and get something that lasts. Lesson learned.

HP consistently scores the lowest in overall quality and customer satisfaction ratings. The Envy will fare no differently I'm afraid. "HP quality" is an oxymoron.

Just curious since envy seems vastly superior in every way to the mbp, is it pure mindless apple fanaticism, didnt realize envy existed, the love for the lightup apple on the cover, or some other reason that made you buy mbp instead?

For me I need mac for iphone development, so dont have a choice otherwise i would get an envy 15" in a heartbeat. It just seems such a no brainer, that's why i dont understand why anyone would choose mbp over envy if just for regular use/games.

Here's the spec of a configured envy 15" that cost similar to the cheapest base model mbp 15" i5. I am not going to bother posting the base mbp spec since everyone is familiar with it.

Because they aren't spec-whores and want more than half an hour of battery life, and the best OS on the market right?

Go buy it. If it lasts more than 1 year. I will literally throw you a party.

no optical drive either. it's external... and it doesn't even have a second HD to make up for it... also no multi-touch trackpad.

If i should buy anything else it would be the Vaio Z.

This thing is a plain copy without the feel and quality of the MBP - At least for the 15" i was very dissapointed by the build quality.

I'm in the same boat. I've seen/used both.

-OSX=Win7 for "multiplatformists"
-OSX>Win7 for computer illiterates
-Win7>OSX for power users

(No crying over this statement please)

PROS OF MBP:
-Look a ton nicer, more clean lines and much more solid contruction
-Better display for sure in terms of contast and brightness , edge-to-edge glass and the rubber bumper. (Not sure about the ultrabrightview 1920x1080 option)
-Trackpad is much better on the MPB
-Switchable graphics are very nice
-Battery life is far superior
-Runs less hot while idling

PROS OF ENVY:
-Optional 1080p display
-eSata, USB 3.0, HDMI
-Runs cooler under load (Very good cooling)
-Radeon 5830 (about twice as good as 330m, this is the biggest advantage to a gamer like me)
-No DVD drive (This is a pro for me)
-Cheaper than the MBP

-OSX=Win7 for people who understand what different tools for different jobs means
-OSX>Win7 for computer illiterates and literates (from a developer's point of view windows is just a nightmare, frankly)
-Win7>OSX for "power users" (computer illiterates) and people who need windows (for AutoCAD etc.)
FTFY
