Kind of coincidental that Apple Pay comes out and now this news. Why didn't they do this stuff a few years ago when they were using NFC terminals accepting Google Wallet?

Probably because MCX didn't get off the ground until after Google wallet and less media attention to google wallet as opposed to Apple pay.

If they support passbook it really isn't worse than using Apple Pay

But they don't support passbook.
A series of retailers are opposed to the success of Apple Pay because the new system keeps user's transactions private and doesn't collect or track their purchasing history, providing the store with little more than the funds to cover the sale.

Retailers want: CurrentC

Banks want: Apple Pay or a similar technology

Consumers want: Apple Pay or Google Wallet

When, in the history of ever, has the market not been decided by consumer choice? All proprietary technology requires consumers. Blu Ray, VHS, LCD/LED TVs are all examples of consumer choice.

LCD TVs just killed plasma. LCD TVs are inferior to plasma in almost every circumstance. Consumers based their choice on fictitious flaws and marketing. Plasma died. Consumers chose, in this case, the inferior product and determined the market. Apple Pay is the superior technology, has much better marketing, and has a lot of big companies on board. It will destroy CurrentC in the long run. It's just going to take time, like all technology battles.

Oh well...

one down.... Lets see how long how many more stores do the same..

This time, its probably just an "change in behavior"

However, fact its looks like their probably working on something "else". Will it be secure? Probably not... But the fact its a chemist... well,,, everyone will like that.

Uh you can sideload apps on Google's platform. So they don't really need Google...

For you, me and rest of tech geeks, yes. We are a small percentage of Google/Apple users

Most Google and Apple users don't know half of their phone's OS capabilities. They text, play games, surf the web and load apps from the App Store.

Didn't Steve Jobs criticize large Android phones? They now make a phone taller than the Note series that started it all. Who's copying who right now?

Steve Jobs also said that no-one would want to watch videos on their iPod, only a few months before launching the 5th Gen iPod that had video capability..

This sounds like BS. I own multiple Apple products and the only time I get an email from them is when I purchase something or a new product is announced and available in the store. Why don't you post a screen shot of one of these emails you get every day to prove it.

I wholeheartedly agree to this. I have the exact same experience, and both my family and my work use exclusively Apple products/services/software. I have never opted out of any sort of email list and only receive emails when I pirchase a new device, or a couple of days after a new product update or launch inviting me to check it out. Oh, also during the major campaigns...education in the summer, holidays in the fall, and Valentine's day.

Hardly a deluge.

Then I look at my wife's email. Every retailer she's ever bought something from online she gets at least semi weekly spam from, it is ridiculous.

To say that Apple is even in the worst 60% of email spamming retailers puld be a stretch IMHO.

I'd love to see some of those Apple spam emails myself.

Be nice, he knows now. ;)

It just bugs the crap out of me when people pass off as fact things that are not fact at all. But what's worse is people posting information they know is false (like Apple getting 30% cut) because they get their jollies out of trolling MR and the mods don't seem to care.

We've had mobile wallet services in the UK for the past 3 years and I've honestly never once seen anyone use it anywhere. I use a contactless payment card whenever possible because it's so quick. Compare that with Apple Pay: Get out my iPhone then unlock it then open the Apple Pay app then find the card I want to pay with then tap and click to pay. It's going to take longer so what's the point. I'm going to have to carry my bank cards with me anyway simply because not everyone will support Apple Pay.

Nope... You get out your phone, tap and touchid to pay, unless you don't want to use the default card you set.

Just a correction to this...I need to add that I do get emails from Apple when I change the password associated with my Apple ID and I did get one when I set up 2FA for iCloud. But I would hardly consider that spam. I'll believe it when I actually see one of these alleged spam emails. Even then I have a hard time believing someone is getting them every day or multiple times a day and had no success opting out of them.

The position taken by CVS and Rite I'd is really untenable in the long run. It will change. The pharmacy business so so ferociously competitive that it will have to.

The more you read about CurrentC the less appealing it appears. It has no advantage over Apple Pay at all.

Consumers aren't dumb; the vastly better security of Apple Pay alone is worth it to me, not even taking into account the convenience and privacy advantages.

I don't see how these CurrentC association members will be able to support excluding Apple Pay after they roll out their much inferior alternative and it fails to attain traction.

Consumers are dumb, and if currentc does something like 5% discount on anything you buy, people will go through some silly hoops to use it. I heard someone talking about how they got $20 for setting up and using Isis for the first time. Things like that are their only hope.

Umm, no. Retailers are free to choose what payment methods they accept. CVS could decide that they ONLY accept CurrentC - no cash, credit, debit or check, and they would be well within their right to do so.

Wrong on one front. They have to accept cash.

Walgreens already has my business to begin with, I don't like CVS. Publix is privately owned by its employees and therefore they don't offer NFC payment yet, since I do most of my shopping there, I could care less about mobile payment systems anyhow.

Actually, when your health plan includes pharmacy coverage it'll state where you need to fill your prescription (CVS, ExpressScripts, etc...). If you don't use the plan sponsored pharmacy you'll either be fined a fixed amount or have to pay more for the same drug. So much for choice.

Can't you opt out of Obamacare and get free market healthcare?

Sucks cause I actually like cvs but am considering changing over to Walgreens now. Sent an email to Walgreens to complain so hopefully they accept before they lose a ton of customers.

Uuuuum, if the retailer isn't paying fees, what fees are passed down to anyone? 0 ≱ 1+. That doesn't make sense.

No fees means no fees. Period. (if retailers start charging more for their goods and services, it would have nothing to do with Apple Pay and NFC payments)

I think the way it works is this way:

Fred goes to the store, and buys a widget for $10.
The store charges Fred $10.80 (0.80 for sales tax) on his credit card.
The store submits the slip (physically or electronically) to their bank and they get a check for $10.476 (97% of $10.80)

The store then does this (or may have already done this):
Pays Widgetco $5 for the widget. (leaving $5.476)
Pays the State 0.80 for the sales tax (leaving $4.476)
Pays the employee $2.00 (leaving $2.476)
Pays for the building, lights, utilities $1.00 (leaving $1.476)
Pays the owner $1.00 (leaving $0.476 for profit)

So, now we see why CurrentC vs. Credit Card is 3% vs. 1.5% is such a big deal. That's a difference between $0.638 and $0.476, in this, admittedly potentially flawed example.

That's not how it works. You don't need to unlock your phone. When you hold it up to the nfc reader, it automatically displays your payment options and even selects your default card choice. You simply put your finger on the home button so it can verify your fingerprint to identify you and you are done.

The real issue with this story is not limited to Apple Pay. It prevents me from using my chipped credit cards as well forcing me to either use cash or pay with unsecure magnetic strip credit cards. They are bypassing the extra security credit card companies are mandating be in place by next year to help reduce fraud. I hope the credit card companies step in and hold these companies liable for fraud as they stated they will do with companies that do not upgrade to these terminals next year.

It does NOT prevent from using your chipped cards. You have to insert them into the reader. It only prevents contactless NFC payments.

CrappyC Will attract some low end only care about the ultimate price customers, which isn't sustainable. They will need to get the masses in, with more disposable income, for it to work. One low end demographic won't be enough.
