I fear Moyank died already! She's unusually quiet! Or just pissed I'm not helping her already. Both worries me!
"Claus, I think I have to hurry. You take care of this one while my short legs run across the road to our beloved Portia, half-ling half-amazing!"
It's a summary of all the post in our current fight.
>>> good choice.
"Get that one, I'll --" Veit cut off as Claus leaped deeper into the woods rushing towards the second goblin as it is raising its longbow. Even in the middle of battle, Veit found himself cringing at Claus' attempt at Elvish.
Screaming the Elvish warcry, or something resembling it, Claus quickly closed the distance and, with both hands, swung his greatsword towards the goblin as it readied its longbow --
*** CHECK ***
Since the goblin is using both hands to wield the longbow, it does not have its shield, thus it has a -2 penality to its AC. Thus, Claus only needs to roll a 12 to hit the goblin. Claus also has a +2 modifier to strength, and a +2 modifier for proficiency in simple weapons, thus:
Claus: 2 + 2 + 19 = 23 - succeed
Claus more than succeeds in hitting the goblin. Now for damage -- the greatsword has a damage output of 2d6, and Claus also has a +2 strength modifier, so:
Claus: 2 + 1 + 5 = 8 damage
The goblin also has 7 hp, so it now has 0 hp.
*** CHECK ***
-- and the aim was perfect; the blade made a clean cut straight through the goblin's neck. The goblin's head disappeared into the woods as blood gushed straight up out of its neck. The goblin's lifeless body took one step backwards before crumpling to the ground.
Screeches and obscenities in the goblin language can be heard coming from the woods as three things happened simultaneously:
The goblin near Veit scrambled to its ground, screamed something in goblin, and rushed at Veit with its scimitar raised --
*** CHECK ***
Since Veit has an AC of 18, the goblin needs to exceed that to hit Veit. It has a -1 modifier for strength, but a +4 by using the scimitar, so:
Goblin: 4 - 1 + 10 = 13 - fail
The goblin failed to hit Veit at all, so no damage is dealt.
*** CHECK ***
-- and the scimitar bounced harmlessly off Veit's armor, sending the goblin stumbling;
The remaining longbow-wielding goblin, still unseen by the party, fires off an arrow and it flew towards Syllin --
*** CHECK ***
Syllin has an AC of 12, so:
Goblin: 4 - 1 + 8 = 11 - fail
The attack didn't hit, so no damage was done. The goblin also immediately hides, so it remains out of sight even though it attacked.
*** CHECK ***
-- and arrow flew slightly too low, hitting Syllin's horse in the side of its head, killing it instantly. Syllin was sent sprawling onto the ground;
-- and the scimitar-wielding goblin that dispatched Portia rushed out of the woods screaming the goblin battle cry, and reached Syllin as she struggled to pull herself out under the horse --
*** CHECK ***
Goblin: 4 - 1 + 17 = 20
The goblin obviously hits Syllin, dealing 5 damage. Syllin now has 3 hp. The goblin cannot hide since it is out in the open and in sight of Syllin and Bartolomeo.
*** CHECK ***
-- and buried its scimitar in Syllin's side. It growled as Syllin struggled to her feet despite this.
>>> The first round is over; it is now @Moyank24's turn. She rolls a save:
*** CHECK ***
Portia is clinging to life; a roll over 10 means she's inching closer to the living; under 10 means she's creeping towards death. 3 rolls of over 10's means she will live; three rolls under 10 means she will die permanently. This need not be consecutive.
Portia: 6 - fail
Portia now has 1 failed death save roll.
*** CHECK ***
>> It is now @Don't panic's turn. You are mounted on the horse on the other side of the wagon. There is a goblin in the woods near Veit that you cannot see; a goblin far away in the woods shooting arrows that you cannot see either; and a goblin out in the open near Syllin that you can readily see. What do you do?
I fear Moyank died already! She's unusually quiet! Or just pissed I'm not helping her already. Both worries me!
"Claus, I think I have to hurry. You take care of this one while my short legs run across the road to our beloved Portia, half-ling half-amazing!"
"I'm still here", I moan weakly. "Just trying to save my strength while I wait for my savior. Slow as that may be."
"Claus won't let me go, darling. Too afraid to be left alone with the goblins himself. These folksingers..all words no action."
*gets into Usain Bolt starting position*
"I'm still here", I moan weakly. "Just trying to save my strength while I wait for my savior. Slow as that may be."
"Don't worry, you will bleed out long before the noble decides what he wants to do" 😀.

> Off from her, you vermin!*attacks the nearby goblin with his greataxe*
If the goblin being attacked is the foul miscreant who has buried a scimitar in my side, my deepest and most profound thanks.
Are there any spells - or anything else - 1) to heal myself, and 2) to aid my comrades in quest, that I perhaps ought to consider invoking at this perilous time?
As the goblin withdraws his bloody scimitar from Syllin's side, you scream "Off from her, you vermin!" as you leap off your horse and rush towards the screeching goblin. Swinging your greataxe, you --> Off from her, you vermin!*attacks the nearby goblin with his greataxe*
incidentally, @ravenvii, an advantage attack is always 1 extra roll, not two, and advantages do not stack
i thought you did 2 extra rolls when the goblin attacked Portia?Where did I do that? I know it's two rolls (1 + 1, not 1 + 2), and that they don't stack.

>>> Oh yeah, that's because of the tie -- it's to my understanding that advantage only comes into play when there's a tie, otherwise a tie would result in a fail?> I've got this, Syllian!
but if you were so kind to freeze him up for me (Ray of frost) i can go after his foul buddy with the bow next!
i thought you did 2 extra rolls when the goblin attacked Portia?
[doublepost=1456256598][/doublepost]
on your turn, you should use ray of frost on one of the injured goblin you can see. if you hit, it does 1d8 damage, which hopefully should be enough to finish either of them. and it's a cantrip, so you don't use up a spell
>>> Oh yeah, that's because of the tie -- it's to my understanding that advantage only comes into play when there's a tie, otherwise a tie would result in a fail?
>>> Ah okay, thanks for the clarification. Glad it doesn't affect the result after all.oh , i see. in hitting, there is no tie. if it matches the AC, it is a hit. so in that case you didn't even need the advantage because it should have it on the first try
as far as advantage (or disadvantage) in most cases it is very discretionary and basically up to you. if you feel a situation provides someone with an advantage (disadvantage) you just do the double roll. in other situations it is determined by the mechanics. but i don't think a tie provides an advantage. why would that be?
in the specific, Portia was surprised by the goblins
since it is a surprise attack, which basically allows them a free round, i don't think i would have given them also an advantage. Consider Portia was in there fully aware and scouting for goblins, weapons drawn, not hunting mushrooms for soup..
>>> @twietee it's now your turn. Recall that you are in the woods on the left side of the trail, a goblin right in front of you. You can also easily see the goblin battling Bartolomeus out in the open on the trail. There is also, of course, that concealed goblin shooting arrows from somewhere in the woods on the right side of the trail.

>>> there's a scimitar on Veit, and another one on you. One longbow is dead, and another is hidden in the woods. That's all the goblins there are.np.
could you summarize the situation?
two goblins with scimitars wounded and engaged to Velt and myself respectively, plus one (or two?) more shooting arrows from the woods? which ones can be seen, and by whom?
I was hunting mushrooms! But not for soup. 😉
