Thanks for the heads-up about the refurb 15" uMBP 2.53 for $1449. I checked my order status page, and it wasn't too late to cancel my order for the new 15" 2.66 uMBP I ordered on Monday for $1999, so I canceled it and bought the refurb instead. I'm losing out on the higher-capacity battery and a slightly faster CPU, but I figure with the $550 I'm saving I could buy a couple of spare batteries, if I so choose. :) Otherwise, I've got the same amount of RAM, same amount of HD space, twice the VRAM and same screen size/build quality.

I see that as a pretty fair deal.

Just placed my order! Yippee!

Hey, any tips on where to get a good deal on Applecare?

BTW, thanks for all the excellent help and advice.

Mine are both shipped and on their way and I've initiated a return for the 2.4 I bought first. They're both arriving next Tuesday so it looks like I'm going to have to pay attention to the shipment numbers so I don't open the wrong one. I'm very excited though. Keep one, ship the other back, wait for my money to come back while I enjoy my new machine.

I've heard you can get good deals on AppleCare on eBay.

Be Careful. This thread should give you pause about buying Applecare from ebay.

+1, have both now, shipping 2.4 back tomorrow morning. Just need to wait 5 days for them to credit my account for the return.

Cheers,

Sucked me in too...

I too just pulled the trigger on a refurb 2.53 GHz 15". I can't believe what a great price they are and how well they compare spec wise to the "updated" model.

I just couldn't pass up the chance to upgrade at such a price.

I just did the same thing. I order the 2.4 first. This morning i saw the 2.53 and i placed a order for that and it's being prepared to ship. I'm going to return the 2.4 and keep the 2.53. Wahoo!

Maximum RAM

What is the maximum usable RAM on the old 2.53, 2.66, and 2.8 MBP? I understand all the new models are 8GB.

Thanks.

I'm looking at the refurb store right now and was wondering if the extra $250 was worth getting the 2.8Ghz over the 2.53Ghz? Looks like the spec is the same except for the processor.

the old 2.53 officially supports up to 4GB. To me, that's good enough. Especially, it costs close to 1K for 8GB. I don't expect it will drop to 50$ in the next year... :)

So, Refur 2.53 it is! I even got rid of my unibody MBP 2.4 bought last year and "upgraded" to this 2.53 without losing any money... :D

I personally wouldn't spend $250 bucks on that small of a processor increase, but if you were trying to future proof yourself to the max you could with that computer, it might be worth it to you.

On your memory question I have no idea.

You sure? I thought the 15's supported 6? There was a thread around here about someone using 6 and it worked but not 8. Maybe I'm remembering wrong?

It won't drop more than $50-$100 in the next several months (and only because of low demand because of the new MBP's finally in stock), but maybe it won't drop anymore for a while. It has great specs.

Let's hope it drops more.

:p

I said "official". i.e. that's according to apple's description. Sure! There are loads of evidence that it will recognize 8GB, but 6GB is the max that it can take.

Update

So, I sent back the first refurbished MacBook Pro I bought and got this new one, which is also going back. I loved everything about this new one except I noticed that the computer consumes way too much power in sleep mode; drains it to zero overnight in fact. Before you guys start troubleshooting the problem let me say that I did calibrate the battery, twice. When using the laptop to drain the battery to calibrate it the battery life was pretty good. However, I read that when the computer gets low on power that it will go to sleep and then you're supposed to allow it to sleep until the battery is drained. Mine just plain shut down. After calibration when in sleep overnight the battery would drain to zero and I couldn't turn on the machine until I plugged in the power source. I checked console: no activity between going to sleep and morning. No devices plugged in any ports and I don't use any bluetooth devices. Coconut battery, About this Mac, and a test at the Apple Store showed that the battery itself was only 9 cycles in and healthy. The Genius I spoke with there told me that they'd need to keep it overnight to reproduce the problem but he guessed there was something going on with the hardware and how it's using power. At that point I said there's no way I'm repairing a machine I got a week ago and now I'm returning this one.

So to recap, I've already returned one Refurbished 2.53 late '08 MacBook Pro for having keys that don't function. Now, I initiated a return for this new machine two days ago and though the return was very smooth for the first one I haven't gotten my shipping labels e-mailed to me yet, (said it should happen within 24 hours) I called again yesterday afternoon asking what the deal with the shipping label was and they said they'd send it again (again, within 24 hours). I'm pushing hour 22, no label. I have become intimately familiar with Apple's customer service by this point and have spent untold hours on hold, and talking to people. I'll be calling again in a couple hours. Customer service hasn't been too bad so far but overall I've had an utterly miserable experience buying my computer.

The March 2009 MBPs (2.66, 2.93) should take 8 GiB, as Apple was offering that as an option.

Ya that 2.53 for 1449 is the best deal right now. I may go for either that or a 2.26 13" with the 128GB SSD.

I received my 2.8Ghz late 2008 model MBP a few days ago and am absolutely ecstatic about it. It was in flawless condition and is amazingly fast.

The battery life is better than I expected. I honestly get about 5 hours with the backlight on low, wifi ON, bluetooth off, doing web browsing/videos.

Although I have noticed that it does drain battery life more than I would have thought while in sleep mode, but I can't see it bothering me too much.

Hey,

I'm in a odd situation as well and I'm wondering what you guys think.

I'll be received a replacement of my "classic" unibody with the new 2.66 unibody. However, when I saw how much the "classic" unibody 17" was going for I really wanted the chance to upgrade.

Exec relations doesn't allow replacements with refurbs or gift cards.

I'm wondering if someone was able to exchange a brand new, unopened, box, in this case without receipt or purchase, for credit towards another unit.

Cheers

I hear you. In the last 3 weeks I've returned 2 Macbook Air refurbs (dented track pad, scratches, wobbly base, detached bezel, defective screen) and a new 13" MBP.

For all I've heard about Apple refurbs being indistinguishable from new machines, my experience certainly calls that into question. Both units were in terrible condition.

Received mine in pristine condition! Another friend got hers and it was perfect as well. I'm now a refurb fan!

I just received an mbp 2.53ghz but the display is DOA!

it boots up and all but the screen wont turn on.

Heading to Apple store to see whats up.

Most likely not, however, you can just sell it unopened and buy a different one.
