i have always read (kindle app, iphone) white text on a black background, and find it more comfortable than the reverse. am adapting to dark mode on the mac, and (think) i will eventually only use that.

we're not all wired the same...

My wife does the same thing. She reads books in bed at night with a black background and white lettering. Easier on her eyes, plus it's not so bright that it disturbs me. I think dark mode has a purpose. I generally do not mess with beta software, so I have not tried it personally in Mojave.

Hi,

NSRequiresAquaSystemAppearance is a optional code string that deactivates the automatic dark mode. So you have to delete the code to go back to automatic mode.

With an PLIST Editor:
edit GlobalPreferences.plist

or

Terminal:
defaults delete -g NSRequiresAquaSystemAppearance

Greetings from Germany

Hey, MacChester.

The terminal command and a restart worked. I am very grateful to you.

Many thanks.

I have trouble comprehending light text on dark background. My brain just doesn't seem to interpret it good enough.

I am running light mode on every IDE I am using (PyCharm, Intellij IDEA...etc) even when it is night. People tell me "do you know you can turn it dark", and I am like "Do I look like a damn idiot!? Of course I know, I just prefer it this way!".

My ability to analyze the code that is written with light text on a dark background is not as good as when I am reading the source code written with dark text on white background.

I do love dark modes in my IDEs. But...except the look, they are not of any use to me.

Same with Mac OS. I just turn down the brightness on my monitor as much as I can, to save my eyes.

nightshift? have you tried it? otherwise, whatever works for you, that's the great thing about having the light & dark modes (finally).

It works well for photography, as you don't want a bright UI to distract you from the photos you are looking at. There are other reasons to use it aside from aesthetic preference.

But you can always just stay on the light mode if it doesn't work well for you. I went back to light on my 2012 MBP running the Mojave beta.

I think Dark Mode is generally very nice, but don't want it on every app...I would like the option to select Dark Mode 'per app', for example on Photos it's great, as you say, but on other apps I prefer the lighter background. Some sort of tick box selection in app preferences perhaps?

Figured out how to get Mail only to Light Mode -- Mail runs in a container, so the prefs are in the container, and you need to disable system integrity protection to make the change, and you can then turn it back on.

defaults write ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist NSRequiresAquaSystemAppearance -bool YES

You need to write this (without the .plist file extension):
Code:
defaults write com.apple.mail NSRequiresAquaSystemAppearance -bool YES

The defaults command finds the right file automatically.

i've been using dark mode consistently since public beta 1. got an email today (on a white background), and when i tried to reply... MY text was black. so, impossible to see. i switched to light mode, and.. was suprised at how 'wrong' and glare'y it was; guess i've gotten used to dark mode, and it's become the new 'normal'..!

I used dark mode for a couple of days then went back to "normal". Just didn't find it all that useful for what few things I do. Maybe it's just what I am used to but I find if I have to adjust to something, then it probably isn't something I will use ongoing. Of course I am sure there are exceptions to that but can't think of anything off the top of my head. Kind of like the newest MBP keyboards, initial impression was "don't like" and glad I didn't buy especially on hindsight.

..until the day comes, and you need a new macbook. then you'll adapt, just as we adapted to computers, smartphones, atms, new OSes, etc etc. meanwhile, we sometimes have choices (ie dark mode or light mode).

I don't get all the hate, I am using Dark Mode and enjoying it because it's new and I feel like it'll improve with time. After all, this is just a beta build and the final release should be much better.

dark mode simply isn't for everyone; just nice we have a choice. and, while i see room for improvement, there's no guarantee that dark mode will be much different by the final release of mojave. anyway, we'll see. meanwhile, am enjoying it too, and glad we finally got this.

I'll adapt, to something I actually like which at the moment, is NOT the new MacBooks. I went in to buy a new one, hated the keyboard and lack of ports so "adapted" and bought a 2015. I had the option to buy an iPhone X and "adapted" and chose an 8. I was a Windows user and got quite capable with it then "adapted" to MacOS. The new Microsoft Office 2016 is terrible so I "adapted" to LibreOffice. So I am perfectly able to "adapt" to many things, but all of those things I "adapted" to were things I liked. The thing is,  is at a tipping point for me. Currently there is little out there I care for which means I have to start looking for new things I like and am WILLING to "adapt" to. Luckily, even though I am a senior, I haven't reached the age where I can't, or don't want to "adapt" to things I don't like. Note the operative word here is like.

As a dev who stares at a screen for 8+ hours a day, I'm looking forward to the final implementation and the corresponding app updates. Hopefully apps like VS Code will use the native dark mode in macOS so it matches a little bit better than it does currently.

For me the Dark mode is almost like an accessibility settings. I have vision problems, and I always have a hard time to read dark text in white background. The new dark mode for macOS is a game changer for me. I'll activate it as soon as I install the update in september, and probably never go back to the normal interface again.

I found that dark mode only works for me with high resolutions/dpi.

I'm SO eager to try out dark mode, but the days where I wanted to chip in with thoughts during betas are over. When Mojave is released and I can use the officially launched version of the feature I'll revisit with thoughts.

so you're posting this because...?? besides, read thru comments on this forum; basically, the mojave betas seem to be the most polished, stable betas from apple since, possible, forever. not perfect (but then, what is?)...

I don't follow closely what has worked or been broken in all the betas over the years. But the fact that  purposely released the beta knowing the printing didn't work really surprised me. I've only done betas off and on starting with Sierra and the broken printer function is the biggest glitch I have personally run into. Polished? Not even close IMHO.

where do you get your information? (am not mocking you, am genuinely curious); did apple admit they knew printing would not work in this beta?

EDIT: fwiw, this is a thread about dark mode, and there IS a separate thread about the printing issue...

I see you answered your own question but in case, yes  said in the release notes that some folks may have problems with printing. And yes I understand it's about dark mode but you brought this up about how stable Mojave was, i just responded to your post.

if it's in the release notes, then apple missed this one; seems most folks are having printer issues...
