I've been using the invert colors feature to she it at night especially for sites that have a white background. Makes it much easier to read. I set my home button to it so I can triple click to turn it on.

That is kind of a sucky solution if you are looking at any graphics on a website, or any graphics at all. I wonder why Apple couldn't integrate inverted colors like Microsoft has done for many years, where the graphics are preserved. It would be a neat solution. Although simply providing the option for a dark theme would be just as neat. My wife isn't a big fan of the white on off white theme when she's trying to sleep.

It is a poor and very lazy implementation of it. I use Change Colors in Chrome, which preserves colors and just changes the background and text. iOS would have it even easier since it's mainly the native apps they would need to focus on.

At least because iOS 7 is uniformly white, it is mostly black when you invert.

I agree its a horrible solution. If theres any images at all they look stupid. For me though its OK if I'm browsing MacRumors before bed or something since there isn't a whole lot of pictures.

Given how iOS 7 was designed, it should be (relatively) easy to make this possible. Would it not be just assigning different colors? They do it pretty well with maps.

Also, I think Jony and Craig are more likely to listen to people than Steve and Scott were. Given that this wouldn't be too difficult of a feature to implement, creating a petition may actually do us good.

Edit: Here's a mockup I did a while ago. What I find very interesting is that all of those vibrant colors that it uses, Work just as well against white vs. black. I think that was probably intentional. The more I think about it, I'd be surprised if we don't see this by iOS 8 (but i'd rather 7.1).

Wow that looks so awesome! I'd absolutely love to see that as an OPTION to enable. I understand folks would like to stick with a white theme, but having a black / dark theme would be very well received by me as well as I'm sure a lot of folks on here.

Who knows a best source to sing a petition to apple and try our chances?

This is Apple. That won't do anything.

But the pieces are already in place for a dark theme. Just look at the FaceTime app.

Or better yet, go to the movies tab in the iTunes Store app. Screenshots below for reference.

But they reduced motion and changed stupid animation, may be they will also Add Dark theme? Why not? Time to move to winphone?

That's because some people were legitimately unable to use their phones. They got headaches/dizziness from the animations.

Dark theme seems to be more of a preference, and such a big change to the look of iOS that if it DOES happen, it won't be until iOS 8 I would assume.

I could be wrong, just my opinion.

I'm with you and think that a dark theme would look fantastic.

It's a preference not to have your eyeballs set on fire in low light conditions? Trying to focus on dark letters with a bright white lit background while your surroundings are dark is miserable for your eyes. I can't understand why some people still think this is better than dark.

I think we're all in for some serious eye problems one day. When I use invert colours, I can feel my eyes relax.

There are conditions related to bright artificial lights as well--even a thread about this kind of thing at https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1666430/

Right, which is why Apple provides us the option to invert colors.

It's a messy implementation, sure. I wish graphics wouldn't invert, and it would be far simpler (and better looking) to have them offer a dark theme.

That said, they don't have to. The solution to the problem is already there in inverted colors. Set your tripple click home button to that and it's pretty much instantly accessible.

It's not the best solution or exactly what we want but it is a solution that apple has offered.

I'm with all of you. Hope they release a dark theme, or at the very least let us invert without fing up media.

I'm not sure, but wouldnt using more dark colors help to increase the battery life since its not as bright as all of the white? Not sure, I could be completely wrong though.

color doesn't play a difference as far as power used when it comes to screen technology used by iOS devices.

Instead of using the ambient light sensor, why not letting the phone change the theme itself based on the current time it displays?

Because you might be in a dark room at 12pm, and want the phone to be less bright than if you were outside in bright sunshine at 12pm.

Would be a nice feature to have that option. Would also be helpful to people in low light or with poor eyesight.
Seeing the contacts list and keyboard in FaceTime looks great.
