I use it every day (as an overlay). Most often for the calculator pad, instantly available at the touch of a button, that shows a full history of calculations. Also to see what time zone people I need / want to talk / message are in. Or see when my packages are arriving, or look up a word, or set a quick timer, or make some conversion, or do a subnet calculation, or to just to be reminded, by the APoD, that there is a universe beyond my workspace.

I would pay a developer for a similar feature set.

I would pay too, for the exact same experience to use on Catalina. The instant nature of dashboard, one key, or one movement towards the hot corner brings immediate access to multiple tool sets. I've always been amazed by Dashboard and appreciate it everyday. Never thought Apple would choose to remove it.

Did Automator got axed too ?
Still exists, as far as I can tell. Still useful in its own way, although less so with each passing year. And the newer voice control might finally replace it entirely. I used to use it for batch image downloading, but a lot of sites don't seem to support it anymore.

I never used this. I first experienced Windows’ version “gadgets” - never used them either. Won’t be missed. To be honest, I rarely use notification centre either. Mainly to open a notification occasionally, nothing else, like people are talking about here. Dashboard always seemed like a pointless thing.

Dashboard was simply cashing in on the widgets fad of the mid-2000s, alongside RSS. Both were based on semi-live information and made use of then exciting technologies like AJAX and what not. That's not to say up-to-the-minute information isn't useful, but like anything else, there were simply other ways of doing the same thing that took hold later on and made Dashboard feel very much a product of its time.

Dashboard, a longtime Mac feature that Apple has been phasing out for the last few years, has been eliminated in macOS Catalina and it is no longer available for use.

The Dashboard option, first introduced in OS X 10.4 Tiger, used to be a prominent Mac feature, housing sticky notes, a weather interface, a clock, a calculator, and other customizable widgets.

It was disabled by default starting in macOS 10.10 Yosemite, and in the current version of macOS, Mojave, it's still disabled unless you seek it out, enabling it as part of Mission Control or adding it to the Dock.

In Catalina, there is no more Dashboard app at all, as pointed out by Appleosophy. It can't be enabled via Mission Control and there's no sign of it in the operating system, marking its official demise.

That sucks. I use the weather app and the stocks app all day long. Can't fathom a reason to eliminate it.

Because keeping it around requires maintaining an older and older code base. And if a relatively small number of people actually use it, it's hard to justify keeping that code base around. Especially since it could be harboring bugs or otherwise interfering with what the developers want to do with macOS going forward. Programming is always about managing limited resources.

Well now we know!!! A dev on the MacOS team has informed us. Code for discrete, stand-alone features cannot be refactored, so it MUST be 86'ed. A Trillion dollar company cannot spend a few man-days to refactor a feature beloved by power users. Thanks. Will never question again Apple's decisions to remove features.

re: StandingGoose

Did you miss the part where I said this was the top-left of my Dashboard screen. Given a large monitor, the information density for a 500ms quick look is tremendous - I just glance where ever I need to find the relevant info. If I want global times > "top left", yet there is much more. But of course, add to my 500ms by forcing me to scroll notifications (a guess on you screenshot since I do not use it). Yeah, it's all the same for Apple brand enthusiasts: Tim Apple can do no wrong. You, of course, have had the option to never use DB. Me, and apparently many others, no longer have the option to use DB because Tim Apple sees no need to invest in the few man days needed to keep it around (previous post).

Can anyone suggest a replacement app that will show and hide a calendar at the tap of a single shortcut key and allow you to navigate forward and back with the keyboard?

That’s literally the only thing I use the dashboard for, and I cannot live without it...

I remember when I first experienced this in Snow Leopard, as a transparent fade into desktop view, how smooth and nice this was compared to the windows experience. It was a nice human touch that would sell a machine to a newbie.

Then Frontrow, that was really cool.

Less was more.

Now there is more. It's not the same in many respects.

Maybe someone will make an app to replace this. :)
“Widget making,” for lack of a better term, has probably been for as long as Jobs.

I always liked the concept, but it seemed to lose support relatively quickly. Would to see if a developer can create an alternative.

And no, Notification Center is not the same and not all that similar. Stop.

After all the fuss & hoopla surrounding it when it was released years ago — now denigrated to the garbage heap.
Makes you wonder what other current hyped stuff will be in the crosshairs
Jobs did hype the bejesus out of it. At multiple events.

I always loved when he would be like “and now you can check out the skiing conditions with just a widget.”

All of us peasants who don’t have a second home or vacation in Vale would be looking on like “what..??”

I'll miss it. It is handy for accessing some information quickly, such as the calendar.

EDIT: For those pointing out Notification Centre, that is something different.

Try ItsyCal, you might find it helpful. It's a menu bar-based calendar.
[doublepost=1559697461][/doublepost]There used to be a screensaver called Dashsaver, that let you turn Dashboard into a screensaver. I found it mighty useful.

no.... i am using it everyday, quick access and view on weather, calendar, stock market and currency rate. do hope there will be another app with similar easy-to-use features

Finally, now all the tools who harassed me over the weather widget have another thing to whine about. luddites.

try notification center / today widgets -- pretty easy to convert

Why didn’t they leave the option for people to turn on that use it? I don’t see any reason why they need to remove it completely?

Terrible decision. The Notification Center was never a good replacement for Dashboard. With one tap I can get a glance at the calendar, weather, time in different time zones, CPU/fan stats, and even an astronomy picture of the day. Simple, fluid, and not constrained to a thin strip of desktop space that requires me to scroll. I use it multiple times a day. So much so that I'm not sure I'll upgrade to Catalina if they've taken it out.

Cant agree more. They should leave the option for people that want to turn it on.
