late breaking news given i have had it for over a month!

I think the more interesting thing to take from this is its expiry date and how this could relate to the release of leopard.

A reason to upgrade to Leopard. Damn, Damn, Damn, Damn, Damn. It took me long enough to justify upgrading to Tiger.

You want Dashcode Pro. If this feature of Leopard becomes popular I expect Apple will continue to upgrade it. Maybe it will get added to iLife.

I'd consider xCode pretty pro and that comes free.

I know absolutely nothing about coding or widgets, and I was able to create a working widget in about 5 minutes.

Dashcode is definitely impressive.

The beauty of it. The less effort it takes to do something, the more likely someone is to actually do it.

I we can develop widgets for the iPhone, then perhaps I WILL get one of those stupid things. I would love to develop widgets to suit my needs, since i have no use whatsoever for a Stocks widget.

While the idea of making this easier to make widgets seems good, the fact that for the most part the dashboard widgets stay hidden makes them just a 'meh' to me. I mostly use the calculator.

If they made a way to stick them on the desktop , now that would be useful.

I posted about this a month ago.

It's cool though I kind of like making the widgets the old way.

Why don't they release a leopard public beta? ;)

They did to ADC Select & Premium members. Unfortunately, you'll have to pay $500 to get pre-release builds. As for why Apple doesn't release it for the average Joe, they probably don't think it's ready for that yet and don't want M$ to start their copy machines until it's done.

If they stay on the desktop, they'd use up a lot of screen real estate. I know in Windows Vista, their version of widgets stay onscreen, but I don't need to see them onscreen the whole time. But, I could see why some people would. For know, you can just use the calculator in the Applications folder and leave that open.

Err...thanks for the calcluator tip :p but I was really talking about things like the stock ticker or other time and data type widgets.

I agree having them all on al the time woule be annyong but having the option to keep some on my desktop would be nice.

For something fairly simple, perhaps based on the templates, it is easy enough to work with. For something a little more complex, it leaves plenty to be desired. For example, I tried recreating my BabeOfTheDay widget using it and had lots of problems with overlapping divs (not being able to access a lower div because it kept selecting the higher div for me). Also, they need a "part" for a plain image, not a front or back image. My widget has a front image for the "frame" and then another image on top of that to display today's babe. I tried using another front image but Dashcode got confused between the two. It took some adjusting to get them separate enough but I still can't load the second front image with an image; fill choices are limited to solid, gradient, and glass. I will make sure to pass my thoughts on to Apple as well. They want this feedback; that's why they released this beta.

Apple has put up a Beta of their forthcoming The beta release will cease to function on July 15, 2007. It also looks like the Beta is only open to ADC members (you need to log in to get the .dmg).

Ok...this is going to sound REAL stupid BUT....will the widgets I make (or hope to make) cease to function after July 15th?

That is pretty fun, I am not a developer but made a quick widget in a minute :)

They could continue taking cues from Konfabulator and allow the widget to exists in different states, such as "desktop level", "below", "above", "normal". That's what's missing.

Like others, I'd get more use out of my dashboard if i could see it.

If you press F12, click and hold one of the widgets, then press F12 again, you can drag the widget to wherever you like. It floats above the desktop on top of all other windows, but it's still there.

Actually, I don't know if I did something to enable that ... I've been able to do that for months, but I usually don't since it's distracting.

Dashcode, etc.

I have some positive comments and negative ones.

First the positive:

I've been working with Dashcode for a while now and think it's great. I would like to see more Templates, though. It is more stable then the one that was out a few years ago. My small company has made some, and if anyone would like to see them, please email me at danuff@ptd.net (I don't want to advertise my site on here). :)

Now the negative:

I think that Apple should open the iPhone to 3rd party developers (especially in the Widgets area). If they are worried about stability issues with 3rd party apps, then that tells me they (Apple) don't really have faith in the smaller developers (like me) when "WE" are the ones that drove Apple to where it is today. There are some fantastic Widgets out there, and some of them would go quite nicely on the Apple iPhone.

My 2 cents....

OMG you are my hero!!!

way cool. i just made a macrumors widget using the RSS feed. it took all of about 2 minutes from first opening the app.

back to messing around...

Steve did say "and we have widgets", i don't see a reason why we can't write them for the iPhone. Basically the same thing and more can be done in a webbrowser, widgets are mostly just a convenience. I'm sure most 10.5 widgets will work on the iPhone and if a small database can be connected to a widget we can do practically everything with it. Apple is hiring middleware programmers for the iPhone and the widgets-runtime is middleware!

We won't be able to program directly to the wifi, network, censors, push mail, synchronizing, plugins, iTunes ...

How hard is it to make a widget?

Is this something I can pick up?

to do simple stuff it's easy. i have zero experience. been messing for not ven an hour and i made a rss reader and a countdown. so far i'm just filling in the templates and adding my graphics.

it's learn as you go, but you can get started right off the bat. i imagine the hardest part is going to be coming up with ideas for useful widgets that haven't been done.

Steve Jobs main concern is someone creating the must have iPhone application. Then Apple would have to copy it or bundle it and they lose a little more control over the iPhone. When they patent as many different touch screen controls as they can imagine, they will allow 3rd parties to come in and they will be able to push them around due to the patents. Someone makes an app they don't like, send them a letter saying they are using one of their touch screen patents.

Sweet! I just made a "pretend" Leopard countdown.
