You buy a license, so you own a license if that. You technically don’t even own the iPhone because Apple owns the operating system. There were articles how farmers don’t even own tractors anymore because John Deer owns the operating system of it.

well if I can I use it as much as I want, and resell it, and do whatever I want with it I consider it owning it. For instance if I can hack iOS and side load things thats not illegal is it?

The subscription is the same as one dinner out for two (for family license). And you know what happens the next day with your dinner. With 1P, you have 364 more days of use. I know which I prefer.

You are right but here are something to consider:-

-If each app and service will be subscriptions, then its no longer a dinner price but a monthly reoccuring bill

-If your credit card fails, if their servers go down, your app will malfunction and if you depend on that app your whole life will malfunction assuming you are using it for business or job not a music player.

-According to what I heard USA court says he who owns the servers owns the data on that server, so 1password owns your passwords and can do whatever they want with it from a legal point from view. DO NOT QOUTE ME ON THAT , but thats what they said about Facebook IIRC.

Well, if that's the writing, fine. They can evolve, but as a customer I can still feel jobbed by it.

Since someone mentioned SiriusXM as a "subscription", here's what I'll tell you. I bought the lifetime sub. They tried really hard to remove those features or make me pay. Two class-action lawsuits later, and I have my free sub back. I listen to them all the time. I backed them when they needed the money. They got greedy, and they were told they couldn't screw people just because they felt the deal was bad now.

I wish someone could do that to 1P. For those of us who bought software that was licensed, it seems disingenuous that they continue selling a subscription, but they take away that option for license holders.

The writing on the wall should be another lawsuit.
Then have at it! In all sincerity I'm curious to see how it'll play out. IANAL, but I'm guessing Sirius XM got shot down since there was some wording combined with the the circumstances say they couldn't legally back down. AFAIK, perhaps 1P's EULA says says something different otherwise?

And it's interesting that Sirius XM's lifetime subscription (where you pay only once and get to use it "forever") got pointed out. It seems companies have learned this isn't a good idea. That's why no companies now offer a 1-time license, nor lifetime subs in business cases where they need recurring income for the long haul. Can someone name some examples where you have an option to pay monthly/annually, or do a lifetime sub?

TiVo. And I did it long ago with Feedly, though I'm not sure whether that's still a thing.

I meant lifetime subscriptions now. They just don't seem to be a thing anymore :\ That said, i hear some TiVo users are still rocking their lifetime subs!
I assumed as much, and TiVo does still have "All-in" plans, but I see that Feedly has indeed gone subscription only.

I have 5 Tivo's with lifetime subs. Three are retired due to tech advance, storage limitations. So much for lifetime.

Ha same here, though I only had 1 of my 3 on lifetime. That said, I think they mean the unit's lifetime, not ours!

Only work well if your entire ecosystem is Apple.

I have Linux and Windows so is a bum.
Grab a good free KeePass client and forget 1Password ever existed. I used 1Password for from v.2 to v.7, but refuse to participate in its new investors' v. 8 "All your passwords belong to us" cash grab. I now use StrongBox on MacOs and iOS, and KeepassX elsewhere. Once it's set up, it's pretty seamless.

Well, 1PW just proofed the usefulness of perpetual licenses and the problems of subscription. Only because I have a perpetual 1PW 7 license I stick with it for the time being and still use local vaults.

For me it is not so much about the price (even if I do not like subscriptions for software) but about the functionality they removed from 1PW 8. In addition I do not like their attitude toward customers. I can very well decide what is right for me and do not need 1PW to "force me towards happiness".

Funny thing - I sent a request to their support to ask how to upgrade to 1Password7. I specifically asked for a license. Got an automated response from sales with subscription pricing for 1password 8.

N.b. Under their FAQ there is a "How to upgrade to 1Password 7 for mac?" and I sent my request using their instruction in that FAQ...

Yeah, I know. I just wanted to point out that while they still suggest it is possible by having the question answered in their FAQ, their "support" has automated the form, so when you use it to ask for help, all you get is a sales mail that doesn't contain one single word addressing the question asked by their customer.

A poorly automated robot support is apparently all they need to provide customers with.

A better deal would be to use Bitwarden for $0/year, or $10/year if you want 2FA support and a few other features.
This is what I use on all my devices. Such a great app...works on Windows, Mac, iOS, iPadOS…

I used to have 1password 4 for all my devices—using a different cloud platform. It was great, but I refuse to pay them that kind of money. The only reason for subscription should be the price is WAY lower. That‘s why I switched to Bitwarden. (That and privacy concerns…)

As a long time user of 1password standalone I decided to subscribe to 1password last year. I have no regrets and the features it offers is worth it in my opinion. I use it also on windows PCs and a recent update added support for windows hello which makes it a lot easier when accessing password all day.
Bitwarden has Windows Hello for way less money, FYI…

I will give it a try, but I have a 1 or 2 year (can't remember) 50% off deal with 1password so after that I can look at other options.

However, way less money meaning Bitwarden approx $1/month vs. 1Password regular $3/month is not that significant for me... if add a zero or two on those then of course! However, I notice for the low price on BW, you get 2 users so right there is a big advantage.
