I have them and enjoy them very much, but that is me. Sound is nice and crisp, subjective of course. I imagine the naysayers or negative comments based on nothing empirical are not the folks they made these for.

It's not about sound quality, but design tradeoffs and value.

They sound good - they are just quite overpriced (as Homepods originally were also).

Technically I think they do sound better than the Sony XM4, but not 50% more $ better. And there are some people who prefer the Sonys sound. So basically the sound quality doesn't justify the price for most people.

I would reconsider a gen 2 model at a $400 price point.....maybe

Agree completely.

I'd also add that with the Sony's (and other models) I very much appreciate the ability to EQ with the App.

APM's adaptive EQ is nice and interesting, but I'd still also like the option to straight up EQ how I'd prefer.

Yeah, the EQ saves the day for the Sonys. The first thing I did was knock down the bass a bit. The bass lift bleeds into the lower midrange, which ruins the sound for me.

Not being able to EQ the Airpods and Homepods makes it hard for me to like because I don't like the way they are tuned.

Research shows that different factors affect preferences. source: https://www.aes.org/e-lib/online/browse.cfm?elib=17940

It would be good if Apple actually allowed users to have a say in the sound curve.
