$1299 Studio Display
$1299 Mac mini M2 Pro 16GB 512GB 2.8GB/s

Not bad-ish... would have preferred that Mac mini to have double the memory, SSD & SSD read/write throughput at the same $1299 price point.
I wold have preferred the Mac Mini have triple the power, RAM and GPU power than it does, at 10% of the price.

Lol some people are just never happy :p sorry

They are actually matching Costco, which also has the base Mac Studio for $1699.
I am super tempted, but want to see what the Samsung Viewfinity S9 is priced at. Thinking…

I bring this up as the first base model Mac or Macbook Air with 8GB memory came out in 2016.

While first Macbook Pro base model with 256GB SSD was a 2012 model.

We're in 2023 and it is kinda weird that the needle has not moved on base model RAM & SSD.

The Apple chips are just fine and properly priced but the base model RAM & SSD are just so archaic.

I know Apple wants to get a better margin by inducing uprgrades but it's not Steve's Apple.

When the first M1 Mac came out in Nov 2020 I was really expecting 16GB RAM & 512GB SSD for the base model MBP 13", MBA, Mac mini and iMac 24" at the base models MSRP.

It would make it volume sellers.

I noticed you have a Mac Studio. Wouldn't you want double the RAM, SSD & SSD speed for what you paid for? If we are to look at PC parts price for RAM & SSD you will see the disparity.

Unfortunately, after being spoiled with the MBP ProMotion 120Hz display, 60Hz just doesn't cut it.

I would not consider the Apple Studio Display (or the Pro Display XDR, for that matter) until Apple moves to a 120Hz display (and adds HDMI 2.1).

The challenge for me is finding a 4k(+)/120Hz external monitor that is professional-looking, rather than an absurd gaming monitor. Suggestions are welcome!!
Get an LG C2 OLED TV. With the latest M2 MacBook Pro or mini, should run 4K 120Hz just fine. And when on sale they’re like $900 or so. Yes it’s a TV so you do lose certain conveniences like waking the Mac doesn’t wake the TV (no CEC HDMI), but there’s ways around it.

I bought 2 on Amazon US site a 6 days ago for my new MacBook Pro and now the price drops. I paid 1499. Does anyone know if Amazon will refund me the difference ?
Ask them. They might, or they might not. YMMV.

Worst case, buy two replacements and return the two you just bought if it's worth another trip south.

Careful: due to a design flaw, the Studio monitor sits too high. Even worse, the height-adjustable version only goes even higher (it can't go down at all). Hopefully that bug will be resolved in the next version. Unless you like standing while you use it.
Yeah it bugs me the height-adjustable only goes HIGHER than the standard tilt display. I like putting my monitors on a stand so I can put my keyboard/mouse and even laptop underneath it as possible but afraid the Studio Display is going to sit too high. I raised my current display to the height the Studio Display would be on my stand and found it is in a bad spot when wearing my progressive glasses. Another reason I wanted to see what the S9 was going to be.

VESA mount option. Put it on an arm for infinite flexibility.

And by the way, the Studio Display enables and supports rotation sensing. macOS will automatically rotate the image if you rotate the display 90º.

Right, but there are never good if any discounts on the VESA mount option.

A brand new LG Ultrafine 5K can easily be had for $1100, open box $900, used $550-800.
There is not a single used Studio Display under $1200 anywhere, I know I've looked
I picked up a couple of used LG ultrafine 5ks for <$400 each on Craigslist. If you’re prairie by you can find a great deal.

It's unlikely but ask. Do a return and rebuy if they don't, if that's possible for you. You should be able to return the new monitors as the old order if that's easiest (and no, that's not dishonest).

True, it's 4K. But they just announced a 5K version of it. I'm interested to see the pricing.

By the way, that monitor is going to have a 4K webcam built in.
Unless a person is making adult videos, I don't see the point in having a 4K webcam. I've seen tons of people in my life, and I'd prefer to see most of them in the lowest resolution possible on cam 🤣

I'd be very interested in the Tilt & Height adjustable version for $1599.

OR I'd happily pay the current price if it got ProMotion, bonus points for mini-LED.

That just means both the LG and the Studio Display are overpriced. In my opinion, the Studio Display should cost no more than $999.
In my opinion, the Studio Display should be free with the purchase of any Mini.

...See, I can make up totally unmoored demands of product pricing as well. But me wanting more for less doesn't follow that it's reasonable.

Still overpriced!
Considering it's 27-inch, 5K, has awesome speakers, has a built-in, an OK webcam with tracking technology, is great looking, and is really well built, it's not "overpriced" and when it was released there was simply no other monitor on the market that could compare to it.

Since then, Huawei blatantly copied it, and Samsung is also releasing a copy in a few weeks.

Interesting, because I have a MacBook Pro with the same mini-LED backlighting and it has no such problem. Calibration issue? Or does the Pro Display XDR have different-sized zones?

Different sized zones. It's easy to see, but difficult to photograph. Bottom image is inverted to show it a little clearer.

I'm curious, but outside of benchmark tests, do people regularly read/write more than 20gb of data off of their drives? By regularly, I mean at least several times per day. Because if your files are only 500mb or smaller, how will you ever notice read/write speed having an impact? If you are copying, saving or opening smaller files, then won't the read/write basically be done before you've moved the cursor on the Mac to the next spot of the screen for your next action?

Good point. That's why I was wondering what were users with 8/256 Macs doing that requires more than 1GB/s read/writes. I can't imagine 4K video editing... 256GB is tooooooo tiny.
