All I can say is when I like a product I don't mind supporting the company behind it. When you buy products that either have a paid up license or they simply depend on the initial hardware sale you eventually become the product and they either fail because they fail to grow or they start selling your data.

I like 1Password and don't mind a subscription service as I want them to be viable. That's not to say I ignore the competition. I continually keep my eye out for better products.

I use 1password for many things. I have secure documents, credit cards, and many other things in it. Encrypted of course.

as long as you buy a device from them, they will support it.
Wrong. At some point your device will be considered obsolete and you will get no more support. So the correct statement would be “As long as you KEEP buying a device from them over and over again.”

Even though I'm very much against subscriptions (since they do start to add up quickly), I still would not mind paying $10 - $20 a year to have the latest version of 1Password. I think developers should get paid if they have created a great app.

However, after reading posts on this thread I feel 1Password is becoming a very different company than I thought them to be. I mean they keep doing these "get 50% off" or get it "free" with Parallars deals just to hook and trick people into their ecosystem. Once people are in, many people don't know how to leave and will be stuck paying whatever people at 1Password ask. And I don't like this practice at all. Especially since now, they have taken away the option to store your sensitive data on your chosen servers (referring to iCloud here). So basically 1Password is in the position after one year to "blackmail" their customers to either pay or lose your data. So what do you think a non-tech savvy person will do? They will of course just pay whatever is asked because they fear losing all of their passwrods.

Until today I was seriously thinking about just going with one of these "deals", but now I have zero interest in upgrading from my 1Password 6 lifetime license. My old 1Password with iCloud sync works perfectly fine and when it stops working, I will simply switch to a different service.

In order for 1Password to get more money from me, I would expect them to bring back the option to use your chosen servers to store data (like iCloud) and provide more fair pricing for their existing customers. I mean it is a slap in your existing customers face to make them pay $40 - $60 a year when some random person can enjoy 50% off.

In my opinion, the current 1Password isn't worth what they ask today. Price it like $10-15 for individuals per year and $20-25 for families and we can talk again. But only if you don't force me to move all of my data to your servers.

In almost 13 years using 1P I only paid for the standalone license twice if I remember right and was quite happy with it. I was on 1P 6 for many years until last year they offered me, as a long-time user, a 1-yr free subscription trial, which recently expired. Now they offered me additional 3 yrs of subscription at 50% discount + a $10 bonus but I'm really not into this subscription model so I probably won't accept it.

Bitwarden seems to do the job just fine, although 1P clearly has much nicer UI and many bells & whistles, but at least most of the important features in Bitwarden are FREE of charge. I tried a few other password managers but none of them seem to offer that much for free. One thing I wish they'd add to Bitwarden is password strength indicator within the app, for example.

I am not wrong. I said as long as you buy a new device, meaning you KEEP buying/upgrading. Also, as long as the obsolete device last OS that it got has iCloud Keychain, it will work. I just fired up my old iPad Air, which was obsolete in October of 2020, it runs 12.5, and iCloud Keychain still works.

Will stick with LastPass until 1P releases a Firefox plugin/extension that isn't total garbage.
What’s wrong with it? I have Firefox and I have no issues at all. I use it on Windows and my Mac.

I've read too many of the reviews here

no subscription for me. I have been using 1p since version 3 and again paid for lifetime straight-out for I think ver7. I will hold on to 1p.
screw subscriptions. I only subscribed to Netflix since 2005 and even that I am contemplating dropping. no other subscriptions, it gets out of hand quick.

good but again the problem is you will continue working with a abandoned software, no updates on your ver 7. and that's risky due is an app related with security.

that's my #1 concern, I'm on the version 6.

I replaced 1Password with StrongBox and couldn’t be happier.
StrongBox looks really promising but I don't get it, how it works, I mean, the passwords are stored in??? his servers? or I can store locally or dropbox or icloud or ???

web site don't say much about it.

also I don't get what's the relation with KeepPass that they mention.

Keychain works also with Microsoft Windows, PC.
Yes, but it’s a bit complicated to set up, requires that Chrome be installed on your computer, and requires an extension for your browser. Some people don’t want those things.

Yes, but that wasn’t what we were discussing. We were discussing SUPPORT. Apple wouldn’t help you with that if you had a problem. Got to keep buying those new devices. Endlessly. For life.

This needs to be stressed: YOU ARE IN THE SWEET SPOT.

1Password 7 is the last version that uses standalone vaults. And as they have either both an Intel binary and a Silicon binary, or a universal binary, it will survive the dropping of Rosetta 2 whenever Apple decides to do so. So you'll be set for life with 1Password 7. Those who were not able to purchase the lifetime standalone license for 1Password 7 are the ones who have to find alternatives or go to the subscription model.

but again! you will never get updates for the 7, is risky lives with security software without security updates.

I mean in the future! sticky with the 7 for the next years don't seems to be a good idea.

I've been on 1Password 6 for the past 6 years, where the last update for it was in 2018. Again, being hindered by software requirements and 1Password's own change in licensing prohibits me from updating:

  • 1Password 7 for Mac requires High Sierra at a minimum. High Sierra was highly unstable on my mid-2011 MBA, and I've been rock solid on Sierra, so I do not have a stable OS upgrade path to use 1Password 7. Okay, fine, that one is on me.
  • 1Password 7 for Mac will run on Sierra, but leaves my entire standalone vault in read-only mode, and will not open in read-write mode without either a license or a subscription. This is the same regardless of downloading the application directly from 1Password's site or the Mac App Store. Want to purchase the license? That is done in-app; however, the servers at 1Password that provision those licenses have been taken down permanently, so you can no longer purchase a standalone license. You're stuck with a subscription or nothing.
  • Due to those above, my vault is stuck in read-only mode, even when reverting back to 1Password 6. only a full restore of my Mac from a Time Machine Backup got 1Password 6 working.
The last update to 1Password 6 was 6.8.9, released in 2018. As I do not store my data outside of my devices (read: nothing stored in any Cloud or SaaS), I can continue to work with the latest update that I have until my current Mac dies (the license for 1Password is lifetime). But due to the above there is no viable upgrade path to any newer version of 1Password 7 or newer that does not involve a subscription. That is ultimately due to a change in 1Password's license model, not anything at the user end.

Paid $49.99 for the one time license for version 7. If it gets to the point it no longer works, I’ll switch to Minimalist. I can’t stand electron apps; good for developers but bad for mac users who want native UI and features.

The Strongbox vault is stored in the Strongbox iCloud folder. You can also access your vault offline.

I don’t mind paying a subscription but I do mind being locked into their own sync service. I am ethically prohibited from using their service to sync, for security reasons.

I also very much mind their electron mac app.

You’ll be good here. 1Password 7 is supported on both Intel and Silicon Macs, so it will work forever, whenever you transition to a silicon Mac (if you aren’t already on one). If you aren’t, then when you do, just download the right version, install it, drop in your license code, and you’re all set.

Like I said before, the sweet spot is having 1Password 7 with a standalone license, as it will pass through the Intel to Silicon transition, and bypasses the subscription model AgileBits has moved to.

I would like to mention that 1Password 6.8.9 works just fine on Apple silicon (I'm using it on M1 Mac Mini + 2015 MBP + iPhone) and it even works flawlessly on macOS Monterey both of my Macs. So even version six is ok on Apple silicon.

This is true, yes; however, since silicon was released last year and 1Password 6.8.9 was out in 2018, that version is an Intel binary. You’ll notice that in the process monitor that Rosetta 2 is running alongside 1Password 6.8.9.

When Apple drops Rosetta 2 support after the Silicon transition completes, 1Password 6.8.9 will stop working on Silicon Macs. Hence the posts about being on borrowed time.

For people unhappy with 1password:

1Password Migrants Thread

What changes? I've used 1Password for a little while but haven't been following their news much.
see above. Basically forced subscription and their cloud storage. There are other options

When there's a dedicated "Passwords" app, I'll drop 1P. I hate being a loyal, long-using customer since the MacHeist days only to see this thing become non-native, enterprise focused. I don't begrudge them making money, but Agile is not the company I started supporting.

see link above

Wait. Are you serious? Electron is a security nightmare. What have you moved on to? Bitwarden worked pretty well for me. What would you suggest? Why in the honest crap would they move to that steaming pile of code? Idiots.

Edit: Bitwarden is also Electron. Good grief.

Edit again: All these password managers appear to be Electron. Are there any non-Electric password managers?

Triple Edit: Dashlane is native now and built on Catalyst. This might be it.

Enpass is not electron.

Codebook, StickPassword(I heard has issues), and SafeInCloud I do not believe they are electron.
The Keepass variants are not Electron I think.

There are Apple only ones that I do not believe are electron like StrongBox and Keepassium.
