And if you had 8GB of ram the OS would use it differently.
Trust me, I am well versed in computer hardware and software. I know how RAM works. It might use it differently but the performance would take an unacceptable hit. That is my point.

Nope. 8 tabs, mail and a word doc would not be a problem for an M1 or M2 Mac with 8GB of ram.

I'm using a laptop with 8GB right now and have plenty free. Contrary to what you think, a laptop doesn't explode with less than 16GB.

I'm sure your laptop works great for surfing MR and checking your email. OS's alone can take up more than 4GB of RAM nowadays. 8GB is a disgrace.

I think you’re both partially right. Yeah, 8GB is basically functional. Light users can get away with it.

But on the other hand this is a $1200 laptop. And people always talk about how great Macs hold their value. And 16GB of RAM would be a great way to make sure the device is usable well into the future. I’m not sure for how much longer 8GB is going to be enough.

Would be nice if they offered at least one device for less than about $2000 with tax that had 16GB.

I’m not a multi-billion dollar multi-national corporation, and I’m sure Apple’s accountants have the numbers, but I keep thinking that if Apple offered a 15 inch MBA with 16/512 that would be a really, really big seller and would make many customers happy. I think more people would be willing to buy it as a secondary device at that price to supplement a desktop or even as a second travel laptop. Not everyone needs/wants a MBP but might need more memory and storage.
16/512 should be the minimum configuration today. Anything less really is a huge disservice to the customer.
Same as 128gb on an iPhone.
