This is the only wallpaper even remotely related to Christmas that I like. Plus, it goes well with the gray look I've got going.

I use CMD + Shift + 4 and SELECT what I want with the mouse. Then - it instantly puts that on my desktop.

Right-Click on the .png file created - and open with Preview. In Preview - File - Save As... Select .jpg - and the "quality" slider will change the file size (and quality obviously) You can also crop and what not in Preview.

Though my favorite program for quick crops and adjustments is Skitch.
 
Taking a screenshot is simple. Just press command-shift-3, and the screenshot of the monitor the mouse pointer is on will appear on the desktop. I believe it appears as a PNG.
