Rip Off Smart Covers

Leather Smart covers $70.00 ... LOL... ours are being sent back.

If it was some 'amazing' cover many of us would pay the high price to have the innovation, but this is ridiculous.

The cost of manufacturing; leather, magnets, labor and ocean shipping would cost out to under $3.00 per smart cover, with Apple's volume I'd guess their cost at under $2.00 each. The plastic covers under a $1.00 to make.

Apple rape's it customers with high prices on all accessories, their HDMI adapter is bad enough, but a $2.00 cover retailed at $70 and it sucks, no thanks.

Apple's GREED shining through a little too much in this case.

Everyone should send their Smart Cover feedback to Apple, info can be found here http://www.apple.com/feedback/

(Remember, we're better of b*tching to the manufacturer of a product than we are amongst ourselves here ... then at least there's a slight chance something will be done about it.)

It aint greed if we pay it....and its great for my apple stock
Please continue to support my retirement- buy a cover!

I like that the smart cover protects my iPad's screen but sometimes I find that the smart cover doesnt clean the screen, on the contrary.
I just saw a few brooms and one said "anti-microbial handle". It cost $2 more and the premise is that I can sweep my dusty scummy garage but this magic handle will keep me germ free and I won't need to put effort into washing my hands afterwards? The same goes with Apple bullet-pointing the microfiber inside lining. It's just marketing gibberish.

(That said, I did pay the extra for the magic broom and own a smart cover. I guess there's one of me born every minute...) :p

Yeah pricing on the smart cover is kind of crazy, but at least the price of the actual iPad 2 is pretty reasonable compared with other tablets on the market.

I decided to return my toothbrush today because it didn't comb my hair.

Geez, people. Did you ever THINK it would protect the back when you bought it? That is such a half baked argument and it's getting old.

If you don't like it, take it back. No worries. But quit pretending it's "so hard to use" and "I just cannot figure out how to fold it". If you cannot fold it back you need to wear mittens to protect yourself and never use sharp objects. Now, again, you may not PREFER it over some other alternative. But let's quit using hyperbole to pretend it's some complex product.

That video was one of the funniest things I've ever seen. I'd love to see that guy review a car and all of the horrible design and usability to get the windshield wipers on.

I agree, I'm returning mine. It's a piece of junk, not to mention the price. Probably a $1.50 material bill selling for $40 to $70 a pop?!

The stand is terrible, very fragile and weak. It's annoying as all hell. Sure it is "slim" and pretty but functionality wise it blows chunks. I'm going with a full-on body case.

...I found a real leather, real smart cover mad like the original on amazon. Look for AYL brand... http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/cr/B004QYUHFY/ref=aw_d_cr_electronics?qid=1301843079&sr=8-5

Let that one be your cover for a while.
It's by Yoobao and is being discussed at length here. I have one on my iPad 2 and like it for the same reasons I like the fit and simplicity of Apple's case on our original iPad. But the Yoobao isn't a very "smart" cover. Sure, it has the magnets in the front flap, but when it's opened and folded around the back, the cover mistakenly activates the iPad's sleep/wake function. I like the Yoobao case enough to live with this and have the new iPad's sleep/wake function turned off. Just want to spare someone who's really into this new feature from wasting their money.

Just joined to chime in on this. I had to return my iPad and smart cover since in my padded bag, my smart cover came loose and the metal edge that holds my smart cover scratched my iPad!!!! Horrible design flaw.

What kind of bag did you have it in?

My targus backpack made for laptops. It was in the padded area and yowzaa. They 24 hour shipped me a new one which I am getting ghost armor for before I figure out what to do case wise.

I stopped using my smart cover. Took it off and am much happier. It was just getting in the way. Around the house, i just don't need it. I will keep it for use when I travel, and for that reason it is nice that it quickly attaches and detaches. I applied BSE on the back and that is all the protection that I feel I need. I love how thin the ipad2 is, especially since I was using a monoprice case on my ipad1.

That's kind if scary... thinking about the smart cover coming off while in my bag and scratching up the screen! :( I sometimes carry my iPad in a STM pad jacket which fits pretty tight and the cover would probably not come off in there, but I'll keep it in mind if I am carrying the iPad in my laptop bag which has a much larger padded sleeve built in.

I am currently using the smart cover in place of a screen protector but I think it sounds like I need a screen protector even if I have a smart cover. I think I'll get a free one with my Incipio case i ordered. I just hope I can get it on without leaving any bubbles...

And I'm not 100% sure but I think I might return the smart cover once I get my Incipio case, but ill wait and see how it feels not having the smart cover on the iPad for a few days first.

I think the smart cover is the most innovative part of the iPad 2. It's one thing to make things smaller and faster, and to add crappy cameras. But the smart cover is innovative and very well designed IMO.

Responding to one comment above: I can definitely say that my smart cover in "upright" position is much more stable compared to my iPad 1 with the Apple case in the same position. The original case was quite wobbly IMO.

So Apple is covering the damage?

I returned mine for the same reason. I rarely use my iPad on a desk/table/flat surface. The smart cover is a poor lap stand.

After a couple days of use, I decided I'm going to return my black leather smart cover. I think the concept itself is very cool, it's just not well delivered in many areas. The obvious being no backside protection. But also, I liked the way I could prop up the original ipad and black Apple case on my stomach when laying down (like an inverted V). Can't do that at all with a SmartCover, nor do I feel it's stable enough when in "TV View" mode or whatever it's called.

I also don't like that when I'm holding it, I can't slide my fingers underneath the smartcover when it's folded back, like I could with the original iPad and case. I loved holding my old iPad that way. I also don't feel the SmartCover is "stiff" enough - it just sort of flops around when it's not closed. Finally, at $70, I feel it's way overpriced and for the above reasons, definitely not worth that cost for me.

I know, many of my gripes are the result of being an original iPad owner, but I like what I like. My search for a similar case continues.

I also think the smart covers are gimmicky overpriced and not very protective at all. I do like the wake sleep feature though. I also don't like a case that adds much bulk to the thin device. With the ipad1 I only used a Belkin gripvue and a PS AG film. This time around I think I want something that folds like a book but that is thin and doesn't wrap the thing in leather so I can't see the bezel, which is white and not the least bit distracting.

So I found a cover called the STM Skinny by Radtech. Their website is Radtech.us. It was only like $35. Check it out.

They are shipping you a new iPad?

They already did. In full disclosure, I bought the AppleCare. They overnighted me a replacement. I still have to send back the one with the scratch in it tomorrow. They were great in the phone call I made. One of the reasons I've been loyal to apple for over 20 years, they have always been loyal to me.

I also returned mine! It was great but truly just not worth $70... I didnt like how easily it would fall down in typing mode either...

That's being generous, I'd call it a flat-out fail as far as a stand, period. It's amazingly unstable and fragile.

It's funny i think the video review is stupid, I think it is just some guy whining about stuff. That being said I am not 100% sold on keeping my cover. I like it ok I am just not sure that I am getting my money's worth for it. I would rather just get a screen protector and feather type case.:confused:

I find it works fine in typing mode but I think it depends how you fold it. I can't remember exactly but I think that microfiber out is the most stable (yet that means you get the microfiber all dirty but I guess thats okay).

Also, I forget if I mentioned this before, but my biggest gripe with the landscape/portrait modes as a stand are that it's sticking up perfectly straight and not back at a slight angle which is probably the worst way to view your iPad unless it's up at eye level.
