Easy there. All these posts are going to bump you up to the top of next months league table!

Well, you know what they say: When you are at the top, there is only one way to go, and that is down. Sometimes steeply.

Actually, yesterday, I had a brief chat with the staff here, and requested to have my 'contributor' badge put aside for now - a request that they very kindly acceded to - so that I appear with a 'standard' rank - something I hadn't done in five years, since another member kindly gifted me a contributor slot.

I hadn’t noticed Ms Westmere!

No, I noticed that you hadn't noticed.

Ever since @GGJstudios mentioned that there are but three of us in that august group, I gave thought to removing my Contributor badge for a while; as I have been a Contributor for the best part of five years, I have lost count of all of the various ranks that I seem to have raced through in the intervening years - I was a 603, or 604 at the time, I seem to recall, perhaps a P6.

To be far I've been posting on my iPhone all day and that doesn't show user titles unless you are in landscape mode.
But work is finished for the day, so back to 27" glory and my lovely Mac Mini.

Woo Hoo! I FINALLY earned a letter next to my number! :p

Ah, yes, the later "a"; in the old days, if memory serves, that was meant (or some members assumed that it meant, or stood for) the word "avatar" as the rank achieved with that rank designation (6502a) allowed members to post an avatar, which was the third 'step' in increasing "privileges".

Those steps included reaching the 100 posts allowed admission to PRSI, arriving at 250 (and having been a member for six months, or one hundred and eighty days) which granted entry to the Market-Place, and the 6502a rank, which permitted members to post an avatar.

Nowadays, however, one can post an avatar as soon as one joins the forum, which removes the old meaning (or significance) of the letter "a" in this context.

But, it is still a milestone. Congrats.

If you are looking for ways to participate in the forums, then when it comes to Apple-related technical information, here's my thinking:

If you are the most knowledgable person in the universe, then you have no questions to ask. Otherwise, you can use these forums to ask questions when you run into technical problems or mysteries.

If you are the least knowledgable person in the universe, then you have no advice to offer. Otherwise, you can use these forums to help less-experienced forum members when they have questions about something you know.

And different people have different areas of expertise, meaning that they are - or can be - the most knowledgeable or the least knowledgeable in many different areas and walks of life.

That is pretty profound. I like it.

Have you ever checked into Ars Technica? :D

Seniorius Lurkius over there probably provides a clue, but without cheating and looking at post counts, I dunno about Ars Tribunus Angusticlavius versus Ars Legatus Legionis. Nice fillip to those monikers is tacked on to the equivalent of "contributors" here: "et Subscriptor", yah and displayed in red too, so it stands out.

I know this is an old post and forgive me for necroposting, but here's the Ars Technica Forum Guidelines. About half way down is the list of titles; most are titles of officers in a Roman legion. Ken Fisher (whose title is "Caesar Imperator"), is one of the founders of Ars Technica, and he is a scholar of antiquity. I'm just an "Ars Centurion" et Subscriptor; I like posting at MacRumors better, because it's not as intimidating.

Hah, yeah I've looked at that just long enough to realize I'm better off not wondering if a commenter over at Ars is a foot soldier or a colonel... I get a kick out of reading some of the posts there but hardly ever comment myself. I agree it's way more fun over here, as long as I stay out of the gear launch threads... and a few hot button issues in PRSI.

Yeah, I have come to the conclusion that the gear launch threads are best given a wide berth until exhaustion, inertia and familiarity (with the new products) kick in.

Does raise an interesting point. From time to time I see a newbie who joined in 2002 or something like that, not really a newbie at that point... This would not have been an issue when you could see the join date of a user without opening the drop-down pane, but not a big concern as this seems to be a semi-rare occurrence as time goes on.

But a newbie with 5 posts who joined in 2002 isn’t really contributing to the site. So in lots of ways a newbie compared to someone who posts a lot who’s been a member for a short time.
