I don't know if you can assume 1 in 6 MacBooks has a problem based on a single self-selecting poll with less than 70 responses. I'm sure Apple has sold a couple hundred thousand MacBooks by now.

Even so, it certainly seems prevalent enough to merit Apple's attention, which it sounds like it has. We'll see if a solution is found. (I too am curious to see if all the parts are the same and it's an environmental factor, or if there's a batch of bad plastic.)

I do have yellowish stains on my handrest now, though I have semi-oily hands so it could just be that. Haven't tried cleaning it, will get a Magic Eraser and try that. I've had mine since the release day, Serial Number series is 4H61.

That looks sprayed or somthing. NO WAY could it discolorate like that, Plus it would go red/crimson

I'd say that te victim of a spray can assault....

That pic can't be real, since there is discoloration on the keys as well. Maybe it's me, but I haven't heard about the keys getting discolored?

discoloration seems to grow as a big issue in apple discussion forum. some of people claim that their palm rest, touchpad change to yellowish. they said it is nothing to do with your dirty, glossy hand. it seems to cause by heat. well, I think that they're wrong. because palm rest on my macbook is too cool to get this kind of yellow. I feel it like 30C or below. however I heard that the first 50,000 units from factories in china were turned out to be defective products. I think that the number is big. Apple should recall all of 50,000 macbooks. I don't remember the site person claim that apple should exchange macbook. is it stain.info or something? anyway, I saw the list of people who have defective macbooks there. 99.99% is between 4H619 ~ 4H622. there is only one 4H623. mine have no problem so far. it's been 2 weeks now. works great!

Eh, mine is 621 and I haven't noticed it yet. The second I see it though is when I go in and exchange for a black one.

You have to take into account that those with a serial of 4H623 and above havent had enough time yet to develop the staining, and that more people would have the earlier macbooks. We'll see how this issue develops over the coming weeks.

They replaced mine today, receiving it tomorrow -- must not have been my "dirty hands" after all, huh?

That pic posted above looks so fake.

You'd imagine the marks to have hand like shapes of some sort, or if the staining was heat related, be located mainly on the left side (processor).

It wouldn't look like someone went at with photoshop, using rounded elipses - unless the owner has Yeti sized fingerprints?

No the same person also posted a few other pics of the macbook at different angles and it looks real and his story was believable. Why would you lie about that.

It looks like even some laptops made from week 24+ are showing signs of discoloration, even though Apple has supposedly started using a different plastic on the inner shell... not good, check out the list at www.stainedbook.info

this no longer matters; apple had agreed that the staining was a manufacturing problem, has changed the casing of newer macbooks, and is replacing stained macbook cases on an individual bases.

or so google news tells me :)

No way. Apple's that were built somewhat recently won't have this issue. The first batch are the ones that will show the yellow stains around the palmrest area due to a defect. "Discoloured" MB plastic for more recent MBs are due to having oily hands, not the defect. The plastics used in later models aren't as porous or something.

My MB is from week 23, and it's as smooth and discolouration resistant as anything. And if it does become a bit yellow later, it's not because of the plastics defect of Apple's. It's because of my oily hands, and that's what I get for buying a white notebook. ;)

bumping... Any more people have issues? In the Apple support discussion forums someone claims that their week 26 macbook discoloured in 3 days..

nope but i am not a sweaty or dirty person and i do wash my hand all the time.

Show me your Mac Book and I'll tell you who you are ;-)

I'd like to change my vote from a no to a yes. Discoloration started after maybe a month or so, and my MB is now due to have its plastic replaced once the apple store receives the part.
