the Machine exhibits the problem

Well I voted earlier in this thread because I was not having discoloration issues.
Unfortunately for me it now has happened. I have the discoloration issue and my case actually chipped apart aright around a corner of the battery. I took it to the Apple store in Palo Alto and they said they would need the machine for a week.To do a upper and lower case replacement. No offer to exchange it out.
I am honestly not happy. I use this machine on a daily basis. I have not picked up a new desktop machine yet because I am waiting for the Intel based towers.
Frustration has set in.

Someone was concerned that a repaired or replaced MB would discolor as well...has anyone had a repair or replacement and the second one has discolored too?

The answer is yes.

Anybody who took their MacBook in during the past month to get the topcover replaced had the same original part installed - Apple did not make any changes to the topcover. The discoloring will return within a month's time.

And by the way, many people who originally said that their MacBook did not stain, have now reversed that decleration. I was one of them.

i just returned mine for a black one. i think somehow i got 100 off though, not that i'm complaining.

is it safe to use 70% isopropyl alcohol wipes to clean the surface of the macbook?

You could always get black :) No macbook should be showing signs of discoloration only a few weeks into their lifespan. My ibook shows none and is years old....

Ya, but who would want to pay +100$ for a color option (seemingly lots of people) it seems absurd, get a white one with upgraded HD and spend the extra money on beer to help you cope with the stained palm rests.

I have a week 24 with no stains, but I'll be patient.

I've had my MacBook for nearly two weeks now. No signs of the orange-ish staining yet, though there are a couple blue marks on my wrist rest. I'm not sure if it's ink or what. It does eventually wear off, though.

week 20 starting to discolour

mine's a week 20 and is beginning to show minor blue/green discolouration, only below the trackpad on the button, i haven't been resting my palms on laptop when typing to avoid the problem.

has anyone tried applying a appropriate cutout of some kind of thin laminate to prevent this problem? InvisibleShield charges too much for this item.

thinking of giving it back to apple and exchanging the case for a black one...

after the 14 days? how did you do that?

if you get them to do this, let me know how. I've tried and they won't.

how do i approach apple?

what's the best way to get apple to fix my discolored pad? i think mine is a 26 week if i'm looking at my serial number correctly (digits 4 and 5). should i ask them to fix it? should i ask them to exchange it? does anyone know what i should expect apple to do about it?

Week 25 model starting to discolor

I have serial number 4H625 which I bought in early July. The discoloration started maybe a week or two ago and is getting slightly worse. I use it nearly everyday for a couple of hours. I'll probably wait a couple weeks to have it sent in but it seems pointless if it will just happen again.

Had mine for a couple of months and use it most days. No staining problem although this will probably change if my kids ever get their hands on it!

Week 30 just starting to discolor a little at the edge of the right palmrest :-(...I leave for school in a week so there isn't any time for me to get this fixed, hope it doesn't get worse. It's not too noticeable/bothersome yet.

This was what I thought as well. When people were complaining about their MacBook becoming discolored I thought, "Oh for god's sake, just wash your hands before using the thing!"

You're suggesting that your MacBook will discolor if your kids get their hands on it - meaning that kids are less hygenic than adults. Right?

Nope, this has nothing to do with the discoloration problem. I washed my hands religiously before using my MacBook. It still discolored. There was nothing that I could've done to have prevented the staining from occuring, short of never touching the trackpad or the palmrest.

I'm gonna have to change my answer from a "No" to a "yes". Yes, my white MacBook started to show stains after 1.5-2 months of ownership, and yes, I tried to clean it myself before complaining about it. Self-cleaning didn't work at all on my MB.

Anyway, Apple replaced the top for free, but I didn't know that they were using the same plastic as before.

Funny thing is that my new replacement top cover area has a manufacturer's plastic "shield" or whatever that covers the palmrest perfectly. It sticks to the MacBook well enough that I'm just going to keep it on. Yep, free protection! :D

I'm on my third. First two went pink, the current one is going a really horrid yellow - someone described it perfectly as 'nicotine stained'. I don't smoke.

No signs of discolouration on my week 21 machine. I've had the thing for seventy days and use it intensively.

waiting for replacement

i brought my macbook in and they are ordering the parts. it's going on week 2 now. :( if it turns out that this new part stains too, i'm going to suck it up and try to get it painted through colorware. i tried to get them to replace it for black but they wouldn't do that. i mean come on, we bought these computers to use them and we're talking about not letting our kids touch it. it's terrible. apple should come out with a statement and do more.

question: has anyone had theirs colored through colorware. i've tried looking up skins but no luck. all i want to do is to disguise the stains. yep, it looks like i smoke and i don't.

Hey, there. I was unfortunate enought to be hit with a "discolouring macbook' and started to see the yellowish stain after about 3 weeks after use. I switched from a PC so it wasn't the best start to a new life with apple.... but i just care aple a ring, they picked the machine up and repaired the top case free of charge and without any more questions being asked:) I must admit, theres a definate different feel to the replacement plastic, it feels smoother and sorta like velvet, unless thats just me

Anyways, apart from that little hiccop, everything is now absolutely fine and i can definately say i will not be switching back to windows, what on earth was i thinking staying with it so long in the first place :D

ok so mine is now discolouring.. Mostly on the left palmrest. If i want mine replaced i would have to drive about 4 hours to Toronto, to see a Genious right?

Or can i do it all over the phone?
Which would you suggest? and can they do the repair instore if they have the part?

i want mine fixed as fast and effectively as possible..
