Does UPS open the crates and ship them to us directly (i dont think so)? Or does the crates full of watches go to an apple distribution center first, and then back to ups to go to us?

I do not know. They most likely go to a distribution center, but the thinking has been that at the point they enter the US the cards are charged and we start to see activity at that point. The wave of card charging has occurred only after the UPS flights from known hubs in Asia (based on previous launches) land in Alaska. It's speculation but it certainly seems to line up.

My guess is they scan the pallet and there is some parent-child relationship where all the watches on the thing charge at that point and then Macrumors lights up like a Christmas tree.

Clear sky and 88 degrees in FL.

The 38mm SS BSB crowd are mostly in the same boat. It's the band holding us up. I sure hope they're on these planes.

Do you have any evidence that says the band is "holding us up"

More like Apple has the most of these watches available and spread out to regional distribution centers.

I doubt a black piece of rubber is a production issue for apple.

I'm a freak about apple and definitely these watches , I literally woke up last night to check status BUT, this tracking planes is absolute madness. UPS ships millions of packages a day, there's no way to know what's on what plane , the plane thing seems so useless

It's pretty common during Apple launches. You could track flights from China through Anchorage to Louisville, and the tracking status would often update within 20 minutes of the UPS plane landing. This is somewhat different since the tracking numbers are being assigned at local hubs instead of China.

Finally.

My wife's 38 ss bsb pending charge and is now preparing for shipment. My 42 ss bsb... still nothing.

Seattle. 12:04 am PST confirmation. Two watches (38/42 ss black sport bands) via apple pay/mobile app.

My credit card was pre-authorized on Monday, and at the same time my watch switched to "preparing for shipment". Minutes ago I received an email from Apple with my invoice attached, including the serial number for my watch. I am in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. I ordered the 42 mm sport model with green band.

To get as much stock as possible out. They are paying for millions of these things to be shipped across the world, so I ok with it. Hopefully mine is one of them!!

doesn't it make sense to stockpile them in US (and other first wave countries) before hand?

Unless those are all produced in last 2 weeks or so and Apple has yet to ship them

You're useless... KIDDING
There are only so many flights that fly from the region that Apple's factories are in to Anchorage Alaska (Where all inbound flights come in for customs).
Theres a reason that for the past two days we've seen movement around 5PM EST... Thats when the planes start landing and when the Bill of Ladings of the planes are scanned.
I hope this makes sense.

Once you have the tracking number, you can track the correct plane by looking at depature scans on a package.

Hooray, my watch is in my list of apple products from my support profile. Now I'm excited :)

BRING ON FRIDAY :D

I ordered my 42mm Space Grey Sport at 12:03 AM PST on April 10th with Apple Pay and got a confirmation email at 12:03...

STILL PROCESSING... I'M NOT MAD! I'M NOT MAD! I'M NOT MAD!

... I'm mad.
