my parents recently purchased a 2010 cadilac cts4 worth over $50 000

a fully loaded hyundai is how much? like $20 000

so would you rather have 2 brand new fully loaded hyundais or 1 cadilac?

i have driven the cadilac and i would pick it 10x over

i spent $1850 on my macbook in 2007 and yes that was every dollar in my bank account, i had never even used a mac before >_< but it is one of my best investments!!!

Well, I wouldn't want to have any of them, but that is just my personal opinion.

That is like going into a BMW dealer and demanding to get a luxury car (1 series) for the price of a Honda Civic. Both are usable cars and will do what 90% of their buyers want from it but one is a premium car while the other is an economy car.

You might want to modify your definition of luxury. 1 series BMWs are not luxury cars. Here, in Europe, they are marginally more expensive than the relevant Civic. I'm talking about the Civic hatchbacks, not some cheap sedan that they like so much in the US. In the UK, Civic prices are between £16k and £25k, while 1 series BMW hatchbacks range between £17k and £26k. 1 series coupes are priced from £21k to £31k. (For US prices, multiply the figures by 1.6, inclusive of sales tax.)

I know this because I recently paid for one. Check out my girlfriend's new car that she's so grateful for! ;) This is a mid-range 5 door diesel (120d SE) with a few extras for around £23k with many extras thrown in.

But luxury... it is not. It's a small family car from a reputable car company that we just prefer. Luxury at BMW starts with the 6 series. Even the 5 series is pretty affordable, compared to an equivalent Ford. They are very well built, but just because there is a slight premium, that doesn't mean that they are luxury cars. The only luxury about that car is that it's brand new. Usually, I don't have any problem driving older cars. A 4-5 years old 3 series Touring (estate here) is still an incredibly good car for half the new list price or even less.

This is just Apple PR. It's a well known fact that Apple is very skimpy about R&D. Most companies spend a lot more than Apple on R&D. Microsoft - about 10X more than Apple, Nokia - about 8x more (in absolute values) and so on.

About Dell service centers... They do not exist. But Dell will fix your computer at your place within 24 hours.

Apple is not skimpy about R&D. Rather, they are anal about how money is spent. There is a lot of focus on what they spend their money on, and even stuff that would make our noses bleed are canned or shelved just because there's no good "go-to-market" strategy. They also do not allow frivolous & wasteful spending on "entertainment" & stuff like that.

And all those companies that spent so much more than Apple on R&D? What was their ROI like? If I were an Apple shareholder, I'd be very happy with Apple's ROI vis-a-vis their R&D spending.

It's actually very simple. As per Dell web site: "The Latitude XFR has been independently tested to meet military (MIL-STD-810G) and IP54 (Ingress Protection) standards for operation in extreme, challenging conditions-including drops of up to 3 feet." Has any MBP been tested to meet MIL-STD-810G and/or IP54? I do not need to convince you. Normal people understand what I am talking about. But you are free to drop your MBP from 3 feet or dust it up a little. Oh, and I wonder if Moshi offers ClearGuard Keyboard Protector for Latitude XFR as they do for MBP? I doubt that. Why would that be the case? BTW, how is the full-body InvisibleShield doing on your MBP?

LOL, you talk about other people spewing out insults towards you, but you're now insulting me? You're whole idea of trying to convince a Mac forum that Apple sux along with their products is just ridiculous, everybody knows who you are here, you have no power here so do yourself a favor and stop making yourself look more ridiculous with every post you write.

You don't need to convince me about anything in terms of that Dell XFR crap, that's not a machine that most people buy, you may have not realized that, but a normal person would, but Apple's computers are in the hands of millions so that should tell you that your argument and point are both moot. :p

I hate deal with good reason I wasted money on a few desktops and laptops.
Out of the 5 I have owned 4 of them died with in 2 years. When I came to apple I ended up just retiring my mac. Simply cause I just bought a newer better system.

Agree, this is pry my favorite feature of my MBP, genius whoever came up with this. So many times I moved and caught the cord or tripped if I had it on the couch plugged in, any other laptop would have slammed on the ground or broken where the connector plugs in.

So MBP users are so clumsy and stupid that Apple had to design a special plug to prevent them from destroying their laptop?

Is the MBP the official laptop of the Special Olympics?

 Only reason other companies haven't copied the idea (like most Apple ideas), is because it is patented.

Now go back to your Dell POS and download your latest security update. :D

let's see if i can put this into words as simply as i have it in my mind...

"***** Dell..I paid way too much for my last piece of ***** laptop that I bought from them and it died within two years of use. I couldn't be happier with my MBP 13" (I've had it for two weeks.)"

I agree with this man. I felt that way last year when I got my first macbook and now mine is almost a year old and it runs just like that day I got it. My gf has had her DELL for over a couple months now and she is starting to have some problems with it ALREADY. I could kick myself in the butt for not getting her a macbook.

I'd just like to say that the insperions are all crap, after all they are the broken low end machines.

But the Studio and XPS lines are actually reasonably good, my brother's 15" studio has lasted him 2 years so far, and he is one heck of an abusive user, they are pretty nice, solid machines, I'd almost get myself one if i decided not to go mac for my next upgrade.

Apple are not without flaws, for one i think the division between their lines is sometimes far too stringent and artificial, the books are perhaps the second worst, after the pro.

The macbook, i think, could be sold cheaper. but it's priced in such a way where people think 'hey, why not go pro', i find myself doubting they sell too many of them these days.

And the 17" MBP is far too expensive in the current generation for what you are getting, for what they are asking you should get the i7 by default, maybe even a stronger GPU or something.

would be nice if they found room for dual HDDs in that massive chassis too.

For half-its-price you can get a Dell XPS Studio 17", with an i7, stronger GPU, etc. For a desktop replacement battery life isn't such an issue i think.

The 15"s are pretty fine... although it'd be nice if the HE edu pricing was default, far better value for money then ;)

Oh well, those are my thoughts.

The users would not be the only person or animal to trip on the cord. Why you could not imagine this before posting your special olympics comment?

Also the Dell studio line is just a more attractively designed inspiron. The only dells with good build quality are the studio xps line and the small business notebooks which incorporate metal with all that plastic. Also these notebooks are not significantly cheaper than the equivalent MacBook pro.

Lol that is rather pathetic, creating a whole site to compare their machines to Apples, to try make theirs look "better" than Apples when everyone knows they're not ...

Smart marketing to go after Apple's achilles heal (price) as we head into an important buying season.

It would be more fun if Dell would get into a slinging match with Apple over the perception you are getting a premium quality product for the MacBook price tag. So many manufacturing issues with Apple machines in the last two years we have lost count. The notion that the products Apple have churned out in Chinese sweatshop factories are premium build quality is laughable.

I still love Apple as my signature demonstrates. :) But definitely the gap between Mac and PC has closed noticeably since Windows 7 was released. And the likes of Dell and HP have upped their game and started producing their own glamour laptops to compete with the MacBook.

Ohhhhhhhhhh...I think it might have something to do with reading dozens of retarded posts about how Windows can only run virus scanner software.

Check this out Sparky. I'm running Windows 7 24/7 and not rebooting more than once a month.

No virus scanner running.

No problems.

I run a Windows virtual machine and several Windows apps 24/7, too. Win 7 is a good OS but, then so is OS X. Indeed, that's why I run both. I have the same problem with posters who childishly and irrationally savage Windows, especially Windows 7, as I have with those who dump on Mac owners. Both sets of idiots evince both ignorance and a profound lack of social skills. There may have been a lesson in there somewhere for those acute enough to pick up on it.

My sister bought a Dell laptop on my recommendation 5 years ago. It sat in her room as a desktop replacement for 10 months before the motherboard went. Although it was still under warranty Dell refused to fix it as they said it was more than normal wear and tear. The laptop never left her desk. I'd heard so many good things about their customer service but they were awful. And their hardware sucks.

People are curious about them, but are usually repelled by price. If price weren't an issue odds are (almost) everybody would have an Apple.

Not sure if it's just a price thing dude. I think there's still the perception of incompatibility with windows too. I know that I had no intention of getting one in 2006 before an enlightened mate pointed me towards a white MB.

Dude I was rocking a 130i for a couple of years and that def felt like luxury! It was actually more like driving a rocket-powered go-kart than a car. I've moved up to a 335d since those days though. Both are a million miles from the battered Vauxhall Astra of my Uni days so it's all subjective I suppose.
