In general I'm in favor of a proper systemic naming scheme like Dell is introducing here, the problem is the names they've settled on are just going to end up being confusing with names like "Dell Pro Max Premium" now being a thing, had they gone with something like "Workstation" instead of "Pro Max" it would have made a bit more sense.
That was my initial thought too, but I think Dell might be on to something.

Dell Workstation is the same as Dell Latitude -> That is, it's "work" focused. I'm not going to look at a Dell Latitude or Dell Workstation for gaming. By taking adjectives that don't have home/work/gaming connotations, they can reduce their lineup so they no longer need an gaming spec'd Inspiron and a "workstation" (e.g. gaming) spec'd Latitude. Now they just need the one SKU.

And thanks to Apple, the nomenclature for "pro" doesn't really mean professional anymore, as much as it just means "better".

I take it all back. Dell has the Dell Pro Premium and Dell Pro Plus.

Sometimes I wish the 'suits' would ditch the corporate speak and say what they mean.

Did you copy Apple? That looks blatant? 'Yeah, but we talked to our lawyers and they said there's not enough of a copyright case to sue us, and we couldn't come up with anything as good, so screw Apple, we're do'in it.'

It's like an old Dilbert cartoon where the company employed a literal weasel to convert statements into 'weasel-speak.'

And it's not just about the terms 'Pro' and 'Max,' but that both are used at once copying the pattern Apple established. If another company adds 'Pro' to the name of a higher tier in a product line, that doesn't raise eyebrows. But this takes it to another level.

Hey, Dell, I hear Apple's little fruit missing a bit symbol is popular...how about putting an orange missing a bite on your PCs? It'll be cute!

lets name our boring, ****** corporate laptops after Apples cool devices - this will boost our sales for sure

I mean, yes, go for something easy to remember, but words like Pro and Pro Max, I don't see those on a computer tbh. Maybe Ultra, but not those.

But it doesn’t stop there, because within each family will be three tiers of products. Base models across the Dell, Dell Pro and Dell Pro Max lines will be entry-level machines and won’t get any special monikers. Meanwhile, systems featuring the Plus tag (e.g. the Dell Pro 14 Plus laptop) will serve as mid-range options. And then sitting on top are systems with a Premium label, which denotes Dell’s most powerful and luxurious machines within a given family.

Uhhh there are a lot of things that Dell can copy from Apple. But they picked this one? 😂
They could have started by copying quality, no need to spend money on name changes.
Better quality and materials would make it more attractive to users. Then their only flaw would be having to run Windows; but they could sell it with Linux instead.

They would have to raise prices if they wanted to match the quality of the MacBook. Did they stop offering Linux on new machines? I know for a while they were giving users the option.

Looks like Ubuntu is still an option on some machines

Next will be Dell's proprietary operating system on these devices. It will be called DellOS.

Dell laptops are the worse piece of garbage I have ever used. Fortunately up to my last employer, I had a choice between Lenovo and Dell. I always picked the Lenovo and they were reliable. When I was forced to use a Dell, it was the worse piece of garbage.

Sucks to be Dell. They can argue the words "Pro" and "Pro Max" aren't owned by anyone but using it for a Dell laptop is very 2nd rate.

Funny, since it's the other way around for me :)

Loving my trusty old Dell XPS 13 (2019) here and totally hates the Lenovo Thinkpad T14 from work.

The XPS is a great companion to my MacBook Pro 14".

These C-suite numb-nuts make millions every year and after 40 years of terribly naming they just now realize the customers don't like it? And then the best they can come up with is copying Apple. JFC 🤦‍♂️

What they should have done is keep using XPS and break the letters up into tiers. Dell X, Dell XP, Dell XPS. Like Toyota LE, SE, XSE. And it would fit nicely with the intel cpu tiers i3, i5, i7 or whatever intel is using now.

What would happen if Apple licensed its older designs to a manufacturer like Dell for resale?
Just copying is cheaper and easier and that’s why it’s hard to see these days if it’s a MacBook or a surface laptop. Except for the nudge and price of course.
