You don't have a P27 to test against, do you? Would it be possible for an OSX update to make the UP27 clearer in OSX?
Nope, sorry, I only have the aforementioned UP2715K.
I don’t know what’s wrong with the P27.
The UP2715K, for clarification, is the 27-inch at 5K.

After OS X 10.10.3 update, I have the Dell 5K display running at 5120x2880 60Hz on the nMP using the dual mDP to DP cables that come with the display. It exhibits the Retina effect scaled to 2560x1440 -- identical in quality to the iMac 5K sitting next to it.

Also works with the 2010 Mac Pro tower with the Geforce GTX 970, 980, and TITAN X.

Wish Apple offered their own version of the 5K display. I have to say this is one of the nicer looking Dell displays with height adjustment and option to pivot to portrait mode.

Do you have another 4K monitor to test if the nMP can handle the Dell 5K with another 4K monitor. I am really keen on a 3 monitor setup (2x 24 + 1 x 27/whatever) and I would like to use to the 5K Dell, but I suspect that 3 monitors is not possible, if one of them is a 5K panel.

Sorry. Just shipped back a 4K ASUS MST display since it would only run at 30Hz on the Mac Pro tower. I could hook up two Apple 27" Cinema displays to make three. The GTX 980 has three DP ports, one HDMI and one DVI. So there are certainly enough ports even with the Dell 5K using two DP ports.

No worries. If I can run 1 x 5k and 2 x 2560x1440 didplays, then I'll be happy too. Thanks for confirming.

Does anyone know if the Dell UP2715k Monitor can be run from the most recent MBP(2016) models? Presumably via MST using 2x USB/C to DP dongles? (Or, even better, a single TB3 to 2x DP converter.) Not much info out there yet.

Yes, I'm using 2 Accell USB-C to Displayport cables. I did have to play around with SwitchResX and power-cycling the monitor a couple of times to get it to work.

Curious why you needed SwitchResX. Did the standard Display Scaling options (for 5k/external) in System Preferences work Ok? Or were they just not right for your apps?

Just wanted to fine-tune the resolution a bit. I ended up scaling the display to somewhere between 4k and 5k.

Yep, it looks like the macOS Display Scaling options for the 5k/Retina top out at [3200x1800] (= ⅝ ratio). Don't know why they couldn't add a simple ¾ ratio [3840x2160], same as UHD. Or ⅞ ratio, which is available for external UHD monitors. Or even 80% - to take the 5k to 4k scaling [4096x2304].

Perhaps the calculations at those densities proved too intense for the iMac/Gpu.

Reference, running the Dell Up2715k monitor from the MBPr(2016)15" via MST.

Some of the more recent TB3/USB-C docks, such as the ones from Henge, sport 2x mDP outputs. Presumably, this should this be able to connect directly to the 5k monitor, using 2x DP cables? Thus using just one of the TB3 ports (and not two). https://hengedocks.com/pages/tethered-docks

I wanted to buy this display today. But it turned out to be impossible. Not a single retailer has it in stock, and dell isnt even mentioning it anymore on their website. Weird!

There are rumours that the UP2715k is to be discontinued by Dell, and replaced by a similar monitor sporting TB3 inputs (like the LG/Ultrafine/5k) - Thou I can't find any reference links.

Maybe you should consider the Dell UP3218k, which will be available in March, thou it is a bit steep...!

!

It appears very likely that they would go this route.
The dual port connection isnt very elegant.
If apple upgrades the mac pro later this year I would be cool with that.

But what to do right now? Maybe it's for the best to really hold on to the tb displays until the time is really there for a true upgrade and not some strange intermediate solution.

That 8k is ridiculous :D I don't have the money or the horsepower or the deskspace for such a monster.

Yeah, $5k for the 8k monitor, and another $4k for the Quadro M6000 GPU. Plus, of course, 4x gold-plated DP cables - since it seems to be a 4x4k tile setup. - You could buy a couple of the latest top-spec MBPr for that much moolah!

Spoke with dell. First they didn't even know what display I was talking about cause it wasn't in their system anymore. Then after I kept pushing, I got the answer that the 2715k is discontinued. Not being produced anymore. "But there'll soon be an 8k monitor!" Just great.

Can the 2015 15" rMBP with integrated Iris Pro graphics run this monitor in a HiDPi mode via SwitchResX, preferably 1800 or 1692? Thanks in advance!

To my knowledge you will only be able to run the Dell UP2715K with a 4K resolution, not native 5K when connected to a MacBook without discrete GPU.
That said you might still be able to run HiDPI resolution based on the 3840* resolution your Macbook delivers. (Though I guess you could better use a 4K screen in that case to save some money)

I bootcamp my 2012 rMBP and am driving the UP2715k at 5K. I connected two of the included mini DP-->DP cables. With my workstation using a GTX Titan X (older model), I am able to select either 5K or 4K and usually use 4K for everyday stuff. 5K is the only option on the rMBP. The next step down is 2560x1440.

AFAIK, all the resolutions you see in display settings are HiDPI, meaning it runs assets at DOUBLE the reported resolution.

1440P is of course 5K
4k would be a massive 8K

So yes, it would be too intense.

You are getting 5K output on your Dell UP2715K because the MacBook you own probably has an nVidia 650M GPU. If it was for integrated graphics only you would not be able to drive native 5K@60Hz resolution. This means my statement (you quoted above) should still be relevant.

So @rdav this is to confirm you are running your Dell UP2715K connected to latest MacBook Pro (2016) without running into glitches? If so, could you please provide a little more information on what version you got?
Ho does the new MacBook perform when connected to a 5K screen?

My experience running a Mid 2015 MBP (Radeon R9 M370X) is not that great all in all. Most of the time the image is fine, but the fans on my machine kick in really quick, even when doing light tasks.

Thanks!
