Demo Apple Watch Shows 70-Second Startup Time in New Video

Out of curiosity, could some of the apps not load because they rely on the iPhone? For example could the weather app be trying to retrieve data from a phone and if no phone is connected it just won't load? I haven't been to an Apple Store yet to look at one so this is why I'm asking. You would think Apple would have thought that through though...
 
Not a big deal, I mean how often do you boot your mobile devices?

What I'm more concerned about is how long it takes to open apps.

If some apps are as long to open as the time it takes to reach to the iPhone in your pocket and open the equivalent iPhone app, then that has just defeated the Watch's purpose.

This is a strange video because I've been to the Apple Store and played with one of those exact demo units at the store for ten minutes on two different occassions. My experience with the demo unit was much more positive. Silky smooth scrolling around, and nothing felt sluggish. The weather opened up as quickly as one would expect. I was going in and out of the calendar, into messages, photos, etc. Everything felt fluid and nice.

The employees probably don't expect people to turn them off and on. I didn't think to (seemed rude, and also who knows what set up is required at boot for demo units). I bet that once it boots up, some set up has to be done to get it all to work properly again. Really baffling to me to see this experience since I didn't replicate the issues and slowness in the video, even when moving around and trying to do things quickly. Based on my personal experience, I don't think this is a good video to reflect using an Apple watch.
 
I don't know which is worse, the weather app not loading or that person's absolutely disgusting finger nail situation.
 
I am REALLY trying to like the Apple Watch....but everything I've seen just indicates it's simply not ready.

It will be interesting to see the actual boot time of an end-user product but from what I can tell, this is slow. However playing devils advocate, who really cares about the boot time. It's not like you have to reboot your phone all the time.

However saying that, the lag time loading apps is painful. Did the weather app ever load? I also found the usability very sketchy. The user clearly struggled to work the interface. Practice maybe, but I never really had to practice with my iPhone. I "just got it".

The more and more I see of this product, the less and less I like it. Nevertheless, just a few days to go and we'll have a few in our office for me to play around with.
 
Just for info...the in-store watches are connected to the iPads next to them so whatever the customer is doing with the watch the necessary info and details will appear on the iPad next to it so no doubt there's a lot more going on with the in-store watches than the standard retail versions.

And for what it's worth I checked out the Watch today for the first time and the UI was incredibly smooth and the screen clarity was off the scale...the marketing images do not do these things justice, I was more than pleasantly surprised!

I'm certainly going to get Gen 2 or 3 as well... But that didn't preclude me from pre-ordering Gen 1. People always talk about how future products will be so much better than the current generation. I'm sure Gen 8 will be better then Gen 2, but the fact is it's not necessary to wait years for a product that's already head & shoulders above the rest of the market. And if the cost is a factor, Apple products hold their resale value pretty well if I remember correctly, which would be especially true of a product that is equal parts jewelry as it is tech, one would think.

The demo watches are paired to the iPad that is integrated in the stand (that is probably the main reason why only the fixed demo units are fully operational, whereas the try-on watches are just running a demo loop). It may be that the in-store Internet connection didn't work or something, but I find it strange that the Weather app simply seems to crash.

BTW, I think a lot of people will be disappointed when they find that there is sometimes a significant delay when the watch has to go back to the phone to fetch some information.

With any luck, it'll need booting precisely once, when you open the box (or maybe after big OS updates).

Really now, a race? C'mon.

And those "better watches on the market now"? That's an uncommon sentiment, let's put it that way. My advice: go buy one of those, then.
 
Who the heck cares about boot time? How often do you boot your iPhone? Maybe once a month at the most? For most users they only boot their phones when they install an update every few months. That's it.

Boot time doesn't matter. Anyone thinking this is a big deal is just being silly.

Was it paired with an iPhone? If not, that would explain the Weather App issue.

In any case, it's a retail demo build, folks. Let's wait til Friday and see what the shipping product looks like. Better yet, give it a few weeks and the opportunity for a few updates to make their mark.

Note to self: avoid MacRumors and other Apple news sites for the next couple weeks. Life is too short.

Exactly. Turning it off should be a rare event, so booting it up would be too.

Unless, of course, you constantly fail to recharge it before it runs out!

For reference, my LG R boots in about 30 seconds, although it's one of the faster Android Wear devices, I think.

The main difference is that it has a colorful boot animation to let you know something is going on.

They did use flash memory which is the only thing that would really fit into a design this small. Flash memory IS solid state, I guarantee they didn't stick a spinning hard drive in that thing.

I'm going to concur with a few other commenters that you can't use demo boot-ups as any indication of how the real product will work. The demo units clear data and refresh from a pre-loaded state each morning. That's why that picture you took of your middle finger on the demo iPad is no longer in the camera roll the next day.

Restore your phone from iCloud backup every morning and see how long it takes.

Haha how great would that be to have a little 10mm hard disk spinning around in there...

I almost mentioned this when I posted earlier.
You raise a good point.
I'm not completely sure how the Apple Watch "turns on", but I honestly don't evision ever turning it off. Even charging at night, I don't think it's actually going to be "off".
