While I am a long time Mac fan (my first Mac was a FatMac in 1984), this is a very poor decision by the DoD. They should be choosing open source solutions whenever possible and with smartphones and tablets, they have an easy choice, Android.

I watched and participated while our government's time and money were wasted with proprietary Microsoft DOS, Windows, etc. Microsoft continually jerked our DoD around and I see no reason to believe that Apple won't do the same.

I know fans of iOS will be happy to have their personal choice validated, but this is not a good direction for our tax money.

Ever occur to you that open source has less security than an iOS device? Especially that mountain of crap called Android?

Government: Hey we kept a lot of cash from taxes let's go ahead and use that and next year we'll raise the taxes to make up for this year...

Better than buying Blackberry or Samsung, or almost any other smartphone or tablet manufacturer company for that matter ... as they aren't American.

Buying American supports its own economy and a heavy percent will go back into their pockets as tax revenue.

Tell me now, where are those iPhones made? Certainly not in the US, and therefor when bought support the country in which they were made, China. Don't be surprised when the US defaults on its own debt and China converts the White House into a King Buffet.

There were two groups that Steve Jobs knew would benefit greatly from the iPhone etc, Hospitals and the Military...

Android is only partly open, and aside from Motorola, all the hardware would be designed by foreign companies. The kernel of iOS is open source as well, so whoop de doo. The DOD has no interest in kernel hacking mobile OSs, so I doubt they care much.

Actually, you are wrong: Android OS is all open source http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_(operating_system). All of the source code is freely available except for the Google Play (formerly Android Market) app. This is a big deal.

I agree, if it was just the kernel that was open (say like OS X Darwin), it would be of limited value, but it is all open.

It's pretty easy for companies and organizations to put their own proprietary applications onto an iPad and distribute/manage them efficiently. Apple makes programs for them to be able to manage apps across multiple devices, without the app actually having to be on the App Store. Plus the hardware itself is more consistent and secure.

So lets see, 650,000 iOS Devices lets say at $300.00 each equals $195,000,000.00 - I'm glad that all of you are good with the fact that the rest of us are scratching to put food on the table and our government spends that kind of money for just 1 department on phones and tablets.

I swear America is comprised of a bunch of spineless and gutless SAPS anymore! You know it's pretty bad when a descendant of General MacArthur (Me) has that to say about the country he is from born and raised.

ABSOLUTELY ****KING AMAZING!

realism in not one of the strong suits of many MR forum users

I would like to imagine they are going to issue them instead of big fat operations manuals that cost tons of money and resources to print. People keep saying it's a waste, but paper and ink toner isn't the free alternative...
