If the apple van is a truly live-in vehicle that modernises motor homes for an affordable price and we can do away with real homes. They could be on to something

Design?

These are barely design students. And first-year students. Any other designer could come with something much much better. They did not think on a concept or idea to do this stuff. Respectless to the profession.

it would be realistic if they developed a car in conjunction with a car company, like Swatch did with Mercedes-Benz for the Smart. Or maybe they will just buy a car company:eek:

Let's not forget what happened when Apple partnered with the best-selling phone company in the USA (Motorola) to make their first phone and what that lead to: the ROKR

This is a project my friend did in school many years ago (now 26 years old): http://www.nathan.com/projects/earlier/macmobile.html

So the base 1.1 horsepower edition will cost $100,000

The 1.2 horsepower edition will cost $120,000

The 1.3 horsepower edition will cost $140,000

And so on.

Self driving

I don't believe that even five years from now, self driving cars will be ready for everyday use, at least not without a manual override. In fact, California recently made a ruling that self driving cars must have a manual overdrive. So Google's self driving car without it, won't be allowed there. There's talk that other states that might allow self driving cars will also require a manual override.

So all the renders that don't allow for manual override aren't realistic.

Actually, we all know that Apple manufacturers nothing themselves. They partner with manufacturers with the expertise needed, as well as the capacity.

In addition, Apple doesn't want the expense, or the risk of building factories.

It will have no door handles, the battery won't be replaceable and it will only have one door, as you will never need more than one person to get in at a time.

Something about the Apple logo on a car just seems uncool to me.

I agree. If Apple really goes into cars, it should make a new separate (but closely related) brand. Apple logo could, of course, appear inside the car (on/in UI electronics), imho.

You had a job.

Okay, all of you designers who put WHEELS under your cars, you're OUT! Haven't you read the memo by Steve? :apple:

What worry me most is the most likely need to a new network of dedicated "iPower Store" because of the proprietary refuel connector

:apple:

These 'designs' look like they are shaped this way from a lack of 3D modeling skill. And rendering skill.

This will be an electric car. And the battery will last 8 hours.

Eight hours battery life? They will sell millions.
Seriously. A battery that lets me drive my car for eight hours, that would be excellent.

If simply measured by time, 8 hours going 65 miles per hour (a highway standard limit here in the USA) would mean a distance of over 500 miles on a single charge. That is excellent for an electric car!

It's quite decent for a car with petrol engine.

These are designs submitted to a competition that paid out a small price (less than $8 per entry). So how much work and original thought do you think you could expect?

I love Jony Ive's work...right up until I get hit in the face with a solid aluminum airbag.

I would expect a Jony Ive car to be flat.

If apple is going to revolutionize the car, it should not have wheels. It should be a hovercraft. And it should have no moving parts.

:D

Or, in a throwback move, it could just have one big ball in the middle that allows it to move in any direction.

Duh?

Job site Freelancer.com recently hosted a contest that called on designers to imagine what the rumored Apple Car might look like. We don't have any details on the car that Apple is said to be developing, so the designs submitted to the contest have no basis in reality.

That said, it's a fun look at how different designers took Apple design aesthetics and applied them to imaginative, futuristic car renderings. The contest had 193 submissions, with the winning vehicle, from Aristomenis Tsirbas, featuring a flat design with smooth curves and sliding doors.

Many of the popular entries had similar futuristic designs and explored different car types from traditional sedans and sports cars to vans and trucks. This third-place Volkswagen Bug-style Apple Car from user Maximchernysh features purple accents, a wide frame, no side windows, and a generous number of Apple logos.

While all of the designs are fanciful, some of the renderings look like they came straight from a science fiction novel. This tiny shark-shaped Apple car from DearbornDesign rides low to the ground and has a front panel for entry.

The winning entry, which is the one at the top of the page, received a $1,500 prize from Freelancer.com for getting the most likes during the contest. All of the different car designs people imagined can be seen over at Freelancer.com's contest site.

We haven't heard much about the actual Apple Car in recent weeks as media attention is largely focused on the Apple Watch, but work on the car is still ongoing under the codename Project Titan at an unspecified location near Apple's Cupertino headquarters. We've learned little about the car, but we know that it may resemble a minivan and is being worked on by hundreds of employees.
