After I performed the update, my desktop files are gone. I had the desktop folder synced with iCloud. They don't seem to be on my Mac, but when I go to the iCloud Drive via web browser, all the documents are there. How can I get them to sync back with the computer? iCloud insists on uploading over 20gbs of files, but it keeps resetting itself.

I've found the files in a cache folder under "bird", but the filenames are all changed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

File a radar with Apple, they might know what to do.

I don't have the problem - but suggest you open any folder - then open the iCloud drive folder on the left - and locate the folder and files within the iCloud folder and drag them to a new local folder - ie "saved files folder" or whatever??

Hopefully this will save the files while you resolve the problem.

Feedback to Apple, then perform a safe boot, then a normal boot.

If that pair of boots does not work around the problem, then maybe:
    1. use Time Machine to perform a complete backup
    2. use Recovery OS to erase the affected volume
    3. use Recovery OS to install a released OS X
    4. use the most recent beta full installer to install Sierra
    5. use App Store to apply updates
    6. enable iCloud Drive Desktop and Documents Folders
    7. use Time Machine to selectively restore items other than ~/Desktop and ~/Documents
