This is the way I know I would feel if I purchased the 12. It won't be any faster than the 11 Pro (and I don't care about benchmarks because they mean nothing in day to day use), and it won't be a better camera. Yeah on paper it will be better but the difference won't be noticeable at all. Plus its going to have a worse battery than the 11 Pro Max. I do love the new form factor, but it just isn't enough for me this year I don't think.
That’s what you think. I have both the 12 pro and the 11 pro max. There’s definitely a difference In color accuracy, better detail, and in one photo the sky was blown out compared to the 12 in my experience so far with the camera. the design is nicer to me, I like the flat edges, and I like the flatness of the screen. So next, the speakers are louder and more refined i would say? Upgrade for sure. i have a vehicle that i still use an aux cable that I still have a headphone jack dongle(lol). the sound is stronger than my 11 pro coming through my speakers meaning I have to turn the volume down where with the 11 I had to turn the volume way higher. Signal and phone calls are stronger, probably because of the Qualcomm modems? My observations so far. its legit a step up, its Not just a paper tiger

There doesn't have to be a reason and nobody, including yourself, needs to justify any purchase. Rarely is a purchase a "need" - usually it's a "want". If you want it, and you can afford it, buy it. You need no other reason than "you want to". If it's a financial struggle, then that becomes a factor. But otherwise, there's really no deliberation needed.

We need to figure out a way to get you to sell your iPhone 11 Pro Max and get you that iphone mini

If you go ahead with the 12PM, once the honeymoon period is over and that return date nears all manner of herbed jeebies will start to appear.

If your questioning it now you’re going to be asking for more justification come 12/13 days after it arrives.

For my 2 pence, stick with the 11PM and IF night imaging and portrait imaging is that important for you, buy a nice dslr which will save you $600 and take far better images.

I think your problem is FOMO, you’re seeing the buzz on the forum and don’t want to miss out, however judging by the return threads there’s a lot of buyers remorse so far with the 12 and 12P’s.

I never have remorse buying an Apple product directly from Apple since I have a 14 day cooling off period 😆 with no restocking fees!!

Aside from the form factor, I can't find a reason to upgrade to the 12 Pro Max. I dont want to spend $700 (after trade-in) just to hold the phone differently.
...

I’m not sure what form of trade-in you plan but if it’s the Apple one where I believe you have 14 days to return your own phone and, at least in the U.K. that can automatically be extended to 21 days on request why not simply get the 12 Pro Max anyway, see what you think, and if you don’t like it return it for a full refund and let the trade-in offer lapse so the experiment won’t have cost you a cent?

I’m still unsure what the battery life situation will be at least for my use. One battery test (the tomsguide one) actually showed the 12 Pro getting about 10% extra battery life vs the 11 Pro when the test was run with the 12 Pro locked to 4G. If that really turns out to be true in real life usage then that’s a worthwhile increase if the same sort of increase is seen for the 12 vs 11 Pro Max models and since I always intended to keep my 12 Pro Max locked to 4G probably for quite a few years to come that’s no hardship for me.

I am curious, prior to the days of forums, and YouTube reviews, how did we all make our purchases?
We either purchased, or not purchased and moved on with life, no?
We read magazines, and viewed ads, and actually went and tried things out in person.

So you shouldn’t have in the return period. It’s after that where some are looking to justify keeping it.

Are there any improvements that I'm missing? The camera is essentially the same and the screen is the same. No FaceID improvements. Battery life is worse.

I am not bashing the 12 Pro, but am looking to help justify a purchase I dont think I need to make

Here is one hotly contested reason: https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...-most-prestigious-iphone-here-is-why.2261414/

Minus $25 Swappa fee, 2.9% paypal fee, and shipping. These things all figure in. If you're going to compare to trade-in price, you have to consider everything. People seem to conveniently leave these out.
I still made out and I have the money now instead of a week or so. $600 take home with all the deductions you mentioned. +$150 over Apple in my pocket is pretty convenient.

You'd be surprised how different the new style phone is compared to an 8+. I would guess that you would say "wow, what a complete waste of space the bezels and home button area are" on the 8+. That said, some people prefer the old design, each to their own.
I am sure but the experience will be nearly identical imo and is hard to justify the expense

Far better screen, camera, speed performance, better use of space, Face ID, premium design, amongst others.
What is it you’d be looking for in a new phone?

I honestly couldn’t really justify going from my XS to the 12 Pro.

However, I’d saved the money, and given the year we’ve had with Covid and lockdowns etc., I decided I was treating myself. 🙂

I don't doubt you at all.

iPhones have simply matured to the point where even what you mention are not night and day differences from what I have. The experience is 95% the same. Runs the same apps, the same core features, the same os, the same storage options for most part, etc.

5g is what will get me to upgrade but I will wait for the networks to get more established before I take the plunge. Probably next year

That's great that you are seeing those differences in the camera. Those other things besides the design aren't currently things that I need an improvement on so I think I'm good. But seriously glad you are liking the 12 Pro.

My only justification was I wanted the new tech. No regrets.
I didn’t go to the Apple store. I called Verizon and was told I would need a 5G plan which I don’t have and would raise my monthly payment significantly. I’m very happy with my current plan. The Verizon rep actually told me to hold off as 5G isn‘t worth upgrading my plan at this time. I switched my 12 Pro to LTE only and am very happy with the improved LTE speeds I’m getting over my 11 Pro.

I have Verizon as well. Do you have data roaming on or off? And is your data mode on standard?

This says it all. There really is no rational reason to upgrade each year these days. Half us still do it because we're addicts, but the differences from phone to phone are not big.
